Howdy,

I have two I Ching books, but their directions for use are different. I like the deeper interpretations of the Wilhelm/Baynes book, but I'm not sure if I'm using it right.

Can you please double check me?

I tossed this: Which is hex #44

------------- 9
------------- 7
------------- 9
------------- 9
------------- 9
----- ----- 8

I'm not clear on what I'm suppose to read:
  1. Do I read the text immediately under the hex 44?
  2. Read the judgment section?
  3. Read the image section?
  4. Read the lines where I tossed a 9 (the lines appended by Duke of Chou -- 9 in the second place, 9 in the third place, 9 in the fourth place, and 9 in the top place)?
The thing is, when I read the "commentary" section for the lines that I think apply to me, many of them refer back to line 1. For example, "nine in the second place" says "This is in reference to six at the beginning". Thing is: I DID'NT toss a 6 at the beginning -- I tossed an 8. So does "none in the second place" apply to me, or not? Or do I not read the "commentary" section yet?

Anyhoo, so then I'm suppose to change the 9s to broken lines, right? And I end up with hex 8:
----- -----
-------------
----- -----
----- -----
----- -----

After this I'm really confused.
  1. Do I read the text under the new hex?
  2. The Judgement section?
  3. The Image section?
  4. And do I read the text for any of the lines?

Thanks for all the help!!!

I'd suggest reading the image and judgement of the original hexagram
The text of each of the changing lines
And the image and judgment of the changed hexagram.

I wouldn't pay nearly as much attention to what Wilhelm calls the commentary on the decision
or the b) commentary on the lines. The info here is hit-and-miss

The interpretations of the Wilhelm/Baynes version are not very deep.
Look for deeper, but if you're just starting out, get real translations
instead of interpretations or beginner's guides.
