... actually, the new platform/software is working very well for me for the most part.

One glitch however: from time to time when I'm responding to a post, I will place my cursor in the spot where I want to type, but when I start to type, the cursor jumps (to another spot on its onw) and the text starts to be added in a different place in my post - and can't get it back to type in line/space where I want it to!

The work-around is for me to copy all of what I've done so far, and then back out of the thread, maybe even opening up another thread in another forum, AND THEN coming back to the thread I was originally working on, and paste back in what I'd already written and continue working on it from there.

Not sure what the issues is - or if it's related to something on my end: my tablet, or keyboard. or browser - but maybe it's something that can be looked into.

It's not a big deal, but it can be frustrating if it happens a few times within a few hours.

Thanks, David.

That does sound heartily exasperating. It hasn't, I'm happy to say, happened to me so far. (Though occasionally the smilies I add show up not quite where I thought I was putting them.) Could you try a different browser, see if it changes anything?

If anyone else has the same issue, please say so, as that would show it isn't just something at David's end.

Oh yes I have had a fair amount of jumping around and things not going where I put them, but not all the time.

Including the weird behaviour David describes of the cursor then being 'stuck' in the wrong place so he can't put it back where it should be?

I think that has happened and also the time where the cursor just did this

all by itself a number of times.

I'm reasonably sure that must have been just something at your end, or it would have happened to lots of people by now. (Compare vB bugs with not being able to edit posts or not seeing paragraphs, and how many people experienced those.)

Things like this (don't know if it's exactly the same as what David said) have been happening to me quite a lot lately.

For example, just now the following all happened in one post, and I ended up having to do them all manually:
  • the "insert link" button wouldn't work at all. I'd highlight text, click the button, and the highlighted text wasn't in the text box; all that was there was the hint (where it says "Text" indicating that's where your link text goes)
  • the text color button wouldn't work at all - I highlighted text, opened the color thing, clicked on a color, and the text wasn't colored
  • clicking on "insert quote" caused the quote tags to be put down at the very bottom of the edit box, not where I wanted them
  • trying to change text size had no effect at all - the tags weren't even at the bottom of the post
The only suspicion-like-thing I have is could it have something to do with the "toggle BB code" button, the little gear on the far right of the tool bar? Before all the above went awry, I'd used that. I clicked back, of course, (the tool bar is grayed out entirely when you toggle BB code, and you toggle back to use it again) - but I wonder if using that button at all messed something up somehow? Not sure.

@Freedda do you by any chance remember when you had all those problems if you'd used the little gear button?

Maybe you could all try it and see if you have any trouble? Then maybe we'd have a better idea if it's Xenforo or our own browsers/devices. @Trojina @hilary

I had no notification of your @. That is nothing showed red there, saw you atted me, looked and yes it's there it just didn't have the little red bell. It could be that when there's several notifications we don't scroll down so it think s we looked at them but we haven't.

I have atted you in the 27uc thread since there's an interesting cat cast.

None of the issues are major, for example if I insert a smilie it won't go where I put the cursor first time - that's not much to worry about though let me try again :freak: oh yeah it was okay that time

The little red indicators at the bell and envelope aren't reliable for me, either. Not sure if it's broken, or if it's more of a very long delay.

@hilary what's the setting to get emails of @ mentions? I don't see one. Maybe there isn't one.

Yes, I didn't think it was anything major either, until I started having the problems I mentioned. It is a big deal when half the toolbar buttons don't work, as they didn't in my post this morning.

Red indicator aside, do you get a notification of any kind about my @ of you? In the list or on your alerts page (where you go if you click "see all" in the list)?

I don't know how that works, either. For instance I just noticed that when I click on a notification in the list in the menu, the same notification is still there when I come back to it. So it appears clicking on one doesn't mark it as "read" and remove it from the list... the list empties at some point, I've seen it say "no new notifications," but I don't know what the rules are for it.

Yikes - that's almost a vBulletin-level tale of woe. I have tried fiddling with the 'toggle BB code' button and not persuaded it to misbehave in any of these ways.

Did you try refreshing the page?
if I insert a smilie it won't go where I put the cursor first time
Yes, I quite often get that, too.. (Except of course now, when I try to test it, and it works perfectly.)
@hilary what's the setting to get emails of @ mentions? I don't see one. Maybe there isn't one.
I don't think there is one, no. Part of not wanting to flood you with emails, though I agree it would be nice to have the option.

*long pause*

There's an add-on for that: https://xenforo.com/community/resources/user-mentions-improvements-by-xon.6186/
Worth a try?

(Every add-on increases the chances something will go pear-shaped, so I'm trying not to pounce on every single one that looks useful - but mention and quote alert emails would be nice to have.)
The little red indicators at the bell and envelope aren't reliable for me, either.
Huh. As far as I know - I suppose I might not have noticed- they work perfectly for me.

So it appears clicking on one doesn't mark it as "read" and remove it from the list...
It does mark it as 'read' - the little red notification disappears. But you're right, it doesn't remove it from the list, and I don't know by what rules the list is emptied - just as well that it is, though.

Miscellaneous discovery: if you accidentally click away from a thread and use the 'back' button to return, you won't see your saved post in the editor. But if you refresh the page, it magically appears. Hooray (and also phew.)

Er...no, actually. Never occurred to me to, in the middle of writing a post, though as you say below (thank you) it should be safe or I could crtl-a, ctrl-c.

I'll try to pay better attention and might (or might not) get a better idea what causes it.

What does this mean, for starters:
This addon is not designed to deal with large group memberships. This feature may be added in the future.

Is the mention-email separate from the quote-email? It's a separate bullet point in this list:
Enable User Mentions
  • Receive Mention Alert Emails
  • Receive Quoted Alert Emails
  • Mention User Group
  • View Private Group

Huh. As far as I know - I suppose I might not have noticed- they work perfectly for me.
How I'd probably describe it - guessing - is that there's a very long delay 'til the indicator appears. I'll get the popup push notification, and I'll click on the bell or go to my alerts page and it'll be there, too - but no red indicator. Yet the indicator's there sometimes.

I think the problem might be tab tiling. I'd been using that, too, and just tried it again and had the same problems.

Refreshing the page as you suggested (used ctrl-F5) fixed it though. Except the first time I refreshed, it only fixed it for a little while, and then the problems started up again. Refreshing a second time seemed to fix it permanently, or at least until I stopped.

Although I'm sure I've used tab tiling plenty of times since we've had Xenforo, without having problems.

Will keep an eye out and see what happens.

I don't tend to use tab tiling, so that could be it.

Yes, do for goodness' sakes use Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C before refreshing: if the editor's on the blink for you in general, no reason to suppose the 'save post' part is working flawlessly...

The add-on seems to have two functions: making @ mentions work with whole usergroups, so you can tag a whole group at once, and adding the notification emails. The size of usergroup part would only be relevant if we were interested in enabling that feature, which I'm not particularly. And yes, it looks as though the quote and mention notification emails are separate, and you could control those separately.

Here's something definite. I definitely did not receive this @ from becalm on Friday, she also atted Liselle. Not there at all, looked all through Friday. Here's the post where she atted

She isn't a clarity supporter I don't think so maybe that's the reason however the mention does show up as a proper link so I wonder if non clarity supporters aren't signalling @s Trouble is with atting if we don't get the mention and don't respond the person can think we are deliberately ignoring them.

Re: tab tiling issue - after testing again and having the same problems, submitted a bug report on the Vivaldi site. Not sure if that was the right move - figured it might be more Vivaldi's problem than Xenforo's? 🤷‍♀️

(Hesitatingly filled in the "url" box on the bug form with the ICC home page address...not sure if that was the right move either - hope it doesn't cause you any trouble. Not sure what they'll do with it - create an account??)

Thank you. I suspect they will add this to a list and put it on a back burner, but you never know.

@-ing... yes, that is supposed to be unavailable to non-supporters. Hm. That was supposed to mean it doesn't create a link for them, not that they can create links but it fails to notify you - and that seems to be what it's doing. Grmph. Will look into that, thank you.

The delay, if that's even the right word for it, can be at least 17 minutes, at least in some cases. I just now went to my notifications, and there was no red indicator, but when I opened it from the menu there was a new notice there from 17 minutes ago. (I was prompted to look in the first place because I'd seen a pop-up notification on my screen.)

Thanks, David.

It's only happened once to me, but for information purposes I think I just had something similar happen. Not a cursor-jumping problem, but a page-freezing problem. I couldn't type in the edit box, or even use the scroll bar. The rest of my browser/computer wasn't frozen. The solution was the same as Freedda described: open this forum in a different tab. After I did that, it resumed working in this tab, also.

What I'd done immediately before was use the Vivaldi notes panel, but I just now tried that again and the forum page didn't freeze.

Same tab, same thread - when I tried to add a quote to a post-in-progress (using the little "+ Quote" thing that magically appears when you highlight text), I couldn't. But when I opened the same thread in a different tab, it worked perfectly.

Is it possible for a tab to become corrupted, in which case it has nothing to do with Xenforo? I have no idea. I opened a completely different website in the same tab and that was fine, but it wasn't a site I was trying to type on.

Vivaldi got back to me very quickly, bless them, and not with a form letter (in contrast to Zoom*, who hasn't responded at all after over two weeks and two inquiries).

Unfortunately, Vivaldi couldn't reproduce it, so they have no idea. They did say to get back in touch if there are ever more clues.

* er, this has nothing to do with the new forum. Was another support ticket, though, to do with out Change Circle gathering.

@-ing update: I just misunderstood how the feature works, and will need to rethink.

Good for Vivaldi for being responsive. (For Zoom, do you want to send me some details to send to them? As a paying customer, I might get a response.) I use Vivaldi notes all the time and have never had a problem, so I don't suppose that's it.

Oh, thanks! I just forwarded the ticket-confirmation email to you*, which contains the ticket contents. Btw when it says the ticket was updated, that's from me updating it myself a couple days ago, trying to bump it.

Meanwhile... the good news is that the 'improve user mentions' add-on, as described, does exactly what we need: allows you to opt in for emails when @-ted or quoted, and lets me properly disable @-ing for non-supporters. Also that I've installed this add-on and the back end set up is pretty clear and simple and it all seems to be working perfectly - I analyse people's permissions and they show up as just what they should be.

The bad news is that nothing at all seems to have changed on the front end.

I'm hoping that the kind author of this (totally free) add-on will come to the rescue.

Update! @Liselle, @Trojina and anyone else who might like to get email notifications of mentions and quotes: have a look at your forum preferences page. (Supporters only.) Hopefully if you check the boxes, the emails should start coming.

The other issue is that mentions - @-ing people - still look as though they're working for non-supporters, even though they aren't. That is, the person doing the @-ing sees the linked username in their post, but the person they tag won't be alerted. I am hoping to find a way to turn off the linking so it's not misleading, but not sure it'll be possible...

Oh well. Am happy about 1st paragraph. Website admin: not for the faint-hearted. 🦸‍♀️ 🍫
