I just updated Java, and got the following popup:

46035690645_f621035f82.jpg

The link for more information contains a lot of gobbledygook I don't understand, but it says to contact your application provider.

(Edited: here's the actual link, for heaven's sake: https://www.java.com/en/download/release_notice.jsp)

It also talks about "the end of 2020," which is two whole years away, but if we're going to see these messages whenever we update - is there anything we should know? (Probably just to ignore it, but that will sound more mellifluous if you say it than if I assume it.)

It doesn't look relevant - not to Windows users, anyway, for whom the version of Java you need comes bundled with the Journal. Probably not for Mac users either, but I will ask he who actually knows what he's talking about...

The Resonance Journal is written in the Java 8 programming language. This means that for the Resonance Journal to work, users need the Java 8 Runtime Environment (the JRE) installed on their machine is some form or other.

For windows users, things are relatively simple. The Java 8 JRE is bundled into the Resonance Journal installation (as Hilary rightly said above), so no separate installation of the Java JRE is needed. As such, windows users do not need to worry about the new changes mentioned in the Oracle Java Roadmap since any JRE that is installed separately on their machines is NOT used by the Resonance Journal.

The situation is slightly different for Mac users. Mac users DO need the to have the Java 8 JRE installed on their machine separately for the Resonance Journal to work. It is not bundled in with the installation of the Resonance Journal (as is the case with the Windows version). However, mac users still do not need to worry about the changes mentioned in the Oracle Java Roadmap, but should ask for advice from me before updating their JRE to Java 9 when it becomes available in the future. The key factor here, is to keep the version of the JRE installed on your mac the same as that used by the Resonance Journal. As stated above, this the Resonance Journal currently runs on JRE 8 (which is the current version).

As such, please ignore the pop up message saying "IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT ORACLE JAVA SE ROADMAP".

If you have any further questions about this issue, please do not hesitate to ask.

So can I / should I uninstall this from my laptop? Here's what I have (Windows 7): in Start Menu > All Programs, there's a Java folder containing "About Java," "Check for Updates," "Configure Java," "Get Help," "Visit Java.com".

A file java.exe is located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Oracle\Java\javapath

I do hope this entire alarmist thread isn't because I did something stupid or unnecessary at some point. :bag: If what I have is indeed a separate installation I don't need, I have no idea why it's on my laptop, how or when it got there...but I have a bad memory, for all I know it was long ago for something I have no recollection of. I've been assuming it was from/for Resonance Journal, but probably not, if I understand what you're saying?

I don't see an uninstall option specifically listed, but could I use Add/Remove programs in Control Panel (if in fact I can/should uninstall it)?

Hi Lisa

What you asked was a fair question. It is certainly nothing that you have done wrong in any way. In fact, you were one of the original beta testers. I think this version of the Resonance Journal did need the separate JRE installed on your machine.

However, as things stand today, you do not need the separate JRE installed. There is no harm in you keeping it, and/or updating to the latest version; but from the perspective of the current windows version of the Resonance Journal, it makes no difference whether or not it is present. If you do, choose to uninstall it, just use the "Add/Remove programs in Control Panel" as you suggest.

Thanks for your post, Lisa.

It is all gone :mischief:

Now the items in C:\ProgramData\Oracle\Java\javapath - java.exe, javaw.exe, and javaws.exe - have dates of May 6, 2018 rather than today's date. Is that as it should be?

(Also that's a different directory.)

Hi Lisa
I am not sure what you mean exactly. Have you just tried to uninstall java using the "Add/Remove programs" in the control panel? If so, what message did you get after the uninstall procedure ended?
Thanks,
Justin
