Ahhh...*deep breath*

Of all the Hexagrams to get in regards to romance, Hex 7 has to be the most difficult to understand and place into practice.

I saw some threads about Hex 7 but what about Hex 7 specifically and only relating to romance? Because, this Hex has to be the least romantic Hex there is! LOL

Now I am totally baffled but also a bit amused.

I asked the IC now, how to best behave in order to develop love in my "relationship" and got, Hex 7

Because, I *understand* that Hex 7 as an answer to the first question means, "manage this relationship maturely"..but HOW do I do that?

sooooo...I asked "ok, so how do I best manage this relationship maturly?" once again it gave me the same damn hex! my ole favourite, Hex 7

I don't know whether to laugh or bang my head on the wall. :)

So, how does one user "organized discipline" to "manage a relationship maturely"?

This is the full explaination of the hex 7 in answer to the question:

"How can I manage this relationship maturely with organized discipline?"

Your Present Hexagram 7

The most successful general is not the one that triumphs on the battlefield, but the one able, through strength of discipline and inner power, to triumph without spilling blood. Likewise, in any large organization the key virtues are discipline and conscientiousness. The most effective platoon marches with a single purpose - a dedication to a lofty common goal which is held dear by all. Otherwise, even with an excess of external discipline, unpopular wars are seldom winnable.

Let power be held in check by the acceptance of a common discipline, and submission to a higher authority for the common good. When life is in balance, evil impulses are checked by human decency; parents die before their children; leaders lead and followers follow. If you hold or aspire to a position of leadership, remember that the true leader captures the hearts of the people, and articulates a clear, simple vision which binds them together.

In the realm of government, the relationship between the army and state is critical. Only when the state is economically prosperous can the army be strong. Only when the army is disciplined can the state be protected from disruptive outside forces. For this balance to be preserved, government must be steady, and mild toward its own people. When balancing strong complimentary forces, modesty and generosity at the center can be a magnetic force which keeps the relationships intact. Solidarity among all elements is essential for success at this time.

Your Changing Lines

The Changing Lines are the part of an I-Ching reading that give the most powerful advice about a situation or issue, because they represent the factors that are causing things to change right now.

You have several Changing Lines, which indicates a relatively unstable situation with regard to your question.

The first changing line is line 2
Good fortune follows when the general works in the midst of his troops. Then, when honors are bestowed, the entire army is proud to see the general rewarded.

The second changing line is line 4
A strategic retreat is called for. This is not a final defeat, but an opportunity to gain strength by removing yourself from the battleground. Retreat is a disciplined disengagement from all response, into neutrality and acceptance of the situation as it is.

The third changing line is line 5
The time has come to be satisfied with recent gains, and go no further. The time to advance again will come later. Strengthen your position by making sure that internal relationships are as they should be. Use this break in the action to learn as much as you can about outside forces which may effect your position in the future.

Which leads to Future Hexagram 45 Gathering Together:

The power of gathering together is represented by a rally, where each individual's strength is magnified by the power of the community as a whole. History has shown that mass movements can bring about stable, ordered and durable conditions for the better. This reading may be pointing to an auspicious time for large undertakings. But the guiding force of a shared vision is essential to hold the forces of unity together, and keep them advancing toward a common goal.

Another image for this situation is that of a lake filling with water. Just as the fullness of the lake can bring good fortune to all in its sphere, it can also overflow, leading to calamity. Thus in a time of gathering together it is essential that precautions against unforeseen danger be considered along with efforts to advance along a clearly-charted course. Much of human misfortune comes from unexpected events for which we are ill prepared; when gathered together with others, we are both more powerful and, in some ways, more vulnerable.

Any time of unity is a time of potential greatness. But that greatness can be both positive and negative. Everything is magnified when masses of people unite for a single purpose. When many people unite behind a single goal or strong vision, it is wise to take personal precautions, and to protect your own reasonable self-interests, because these can easily be lost in the crowd.

with/from containment comes devotion to another/others.

The infrastructure of 7 is described by analogy to 41 - a focus on concentrating, distilling (and so the generic sense of uniformity, an 'army' etc)

The containment reflects the act of concentrating and from that comes 'purity' in expression (and so a sense of 'order' but imposed from the outside, one obeys orders etc - thus distillation 'does' something to what is distilled)

From the negative side we have a base trigram associated with issues of rejection/rejecting in which is operating the emotion of fear... although the top trigram in a refined format reflects the exploitation of fear in the form of protection in numbers (a group devotion etc)

When one receives hex 7 one is often on a mission, a campaign to attain a certain outcome. Tactics and strategies are involved.

Is that the best way to find love ? Depends on opinionI suppose.

Over on the 'Is Yi pulling my leg' thread I have commented that from my point of view you could not be acting in a more hex 7 way exemplified in the advice you give the querant there.

There regardless of the fact the man she likes is in another relationship you advise her on strategies and techniques for 'getting' him - even though from what she has said so far the man does not yet realise she is the 'cats pyjamas' as she puts it.

Hex 7 also would involve planning ahead too - his child isn't some irrelevant byproduct - if you live with him you will have to accomodate (and sometimes pay for) the child aswell - unless he plans on ditching the child altogether. A child, now thats a powerful force indeed.

Not sure why you are puzzled at getting 7 - seems clear to me - either you or him treat this relationship like a campaign to win something. Right now you think you are winning cos you see your last tactic as working.

Who knows maybe you'll win the whole prize.

Trojan,

I answered you in the other thread before I saw this.

Please understand that it was the IC recommending Hex 7 to me. And I didn't understand how do interpret it.

Also, please notice that my question to the I ching was about development of love and how to handle the relationship in a mature manner.

I also have a child, so I do not consider his child or any other children to by by products.

I am not thinking in terms of "winning" but more in terms of "surviving" and "prospering" in love. I just can't help but feel that you are being so judgemental of the situation that you are seeing it in terms of me "winning" or "manipulating" etc..

The way I see this is that this is not going to be an easy time for either of you. Therefore, there needs to be some serious planning, organising and strategy involved in both external and internal needs.

I used to get this hex when I was in the middle of an emotionally charged situation and I needed to grow up and get some discipline in order to see what was before me objectively. Again that means is this REALLY what you want? Is this man REALLY the guy you want to be with? There are innumerable emotions and instincts that can govern our decision to be want to be with someone as you well know. So, if you are clear that there is no lying to yourself about anything then go ahead and organise the troops and go the whole nine yards. :D

It seems clear to me that when we love someone - I mean truly LOVE someone - there is no real way to behave - it just IS. You match. Managing things "maturely" means respecting the other building trust and NO BS. This obviously goes both ways and for that you BOTH need to sit down and "marshall your resources" and develop a plan. But to "develop love"? What do you mean? Is there love there or not? How to behave and how to be mature is self-evident I think especially if you already have a child. Perhaps you have doubts? I just throw this up for further pondering Laylab. I may be way off.

Conversely, there are times when we have to get our mental and emotional state in order and fight for the person involved. Sometimes, it takes some time to realise and recognize that person is part of you. Most of us are so damaged one way or another it's a bit of minefield as most of us know by now.... If you are prepared and know what you want and you want the best for him also and are willing to do what it takes for both of you then off you go.

To me as well, 7 seems very appropriate. Then again, I have my own personal battlefield when it comes to romance so what do I know?

Anyways, some thoughts rattled off. Hope this helps a bit.

The fact that Hex 7 is so unromantic is in fact the key to understanding what the Yi is telling you. Hex 7 is about using organized force, responsbily led. So it's telling you to NOT to take romantic approaches to your lovelife, but to get organized in a forceful and no-compromise way. Hex 7 isn't about waging war, it's about strong, wise leadership guiding powerful, organized force. If I'd asked your question and drawn Hex 7, I'd be asking myself questions like:

* What's the most sensible, forceful, 'get-results' way to relate to another in a love relationship?

* What romantic, walks-under-the-full-moon notions and approaches do I have to abandon?

Tough love, in other words. Don't take any crap. Let the other person know you mean business. You're not to be messed with, but if dealt with right, you're a strong lover.

Laylab, you have a lucid way of answering your own questions. That's as good of an explanation of 7/45 as I've ever heard.

Now it is just a matter of actually doing it. Or perhaps more succinctly, actually being it. That's always the hard part, isn't it? Perhaps a hint is given yet again through 7, water beneath the surface, in the ground and in your gut. That makes an idea become actualized in the belly of your being.

Oh... I didn't realize it was quoted.

Would like to know what version that's from... it's very good, imo.

sooooo...I asked "ok, so how do I best manage this relationship maturly?" once again it gave me the same damn hex! my ole favourite, Hex 7

So, how does one user "organized discipline" to "manage a relationship maturely"?

Now you have 7.2.4.5 leading to Hex 45. One way of looking into this is Yi Jing is telling you the possibilities along the way to manage the relationship so there will be gathering together to maintain the unity.

Therefore hex 2 line 2 refers to 7.2

"Straightforward, turning to the sides, and great.
Do not practice anything [and yet] nothing is unfavorable!"

Keep your authenticity. Act natural be natural. Be just yourself do not force things neither earlier nor later. Let things happen as they would when they need to.

heaven (yang) creates things yet it is earth (yin) that completes things. Therefore it is the nature of yin to do nothing ( as means of not intervening) hence achieving the completion.

7.4 refers to 16.4
"Following preparedness: great is the aquisition!
Do not doubt!
Friends relate like hair gathering around a hairpin."

This is the motivation as it is the first yang line of the upper trigram making it thunder movement, shaking creating something new from the old or moving things and shaking their dust away. There should not be doubt as if what would others would say. Do nat expect reward or punishment yet everyone will be supportive.

7. 5 refers to 45.5

The assembly has positions .
No disaster.
No sincerity
Commence abiding steadiness.
Repentance will disappear.

This is a warning as it might be too late to recognize that things do not fit to their place. People, event should be in their proper time and place when one of them do not fit then the jigsaw puzzled can not be solved.

45 is the potential of the changes in your initial hexagram of 7. The changing lines are the warnings what can happen along the way which may alter as you adapt to the situation and there happens a shift in the change.

Hope this helps.

Hi Togan,

that was the most helpful interpretation so far! Thank you. I have read it over three times and will most likely refer back to it it again :)

Laylab,
I think the judgement makes the whole thing pretty clear: Strength and perseverance. Orderliness, keeping all your ducks in order. Line four alludes to timely witdrawal and the wisdom to know when to call off the dogs. I would say that from the emphasis on #7 that you have been a bit remiss in develooping the strengths embodied in the counsel. Or perhaps, for I don't know you, you are being told to strengthen these already abundant qualities.

Best regards,

Isn't hexagram 7 all about how to manage deep emotion with an emphasis on yielding. Water is the lower trigram and earth the upper one. Line two is the general in the middle of the thick of it. He/she manages to be level headed and leads the way, helped by all the lines of the upper trigram, in particular Line five, who employes him because he considers him as the man in charge. The other two changing lines are all in the upper trigram, namely 4 and 5. Line four retreats because the line is weak by nature and place. The whole thing changes to 45 which is promising but only if the the questioner has the strength to lead level headed (line 2) to retreat in the face of inner weakness (line 4) and to entrust the job to the general in line 2 (line 5) - then the battle of emotions in this case will lead to hexagram 45.

The fact that the questioner is wants a "romantic" hexagram and therefore sees hexagram 7 as an undesired or negative hexagram speaks volumes and is in my opinion critical!
