In astrology, the last aspect the moon makes with the various planets before it leaves the sign it is in is used for divining how an activity initiated at that time will turn out. Thus, if you start a project on a day when the last aspect the moon makes will be a connection to Venus, you can usually assume the project will go well, that there will be a happy ending. The moon changes signs approximately every 2.5 days, so if the moon isn't making a friendly connection one day, you can usually wait a day or two and you'll find there is a hospitable opportunity coming up. However, for the last several years, the planet Pluto - the slowest moving planet - has been at the tail end of the sign it's in. Thus, even during a good month, Pluto has been the planet of last degree several times a week. So any activities initiated lately (since roughly 2004) have had the strong possibility of ending on this Pluto note. Pluto is the planet associated with death and rebirth, total change and transformation and also with great wealth and oil. It is in the sign Sagittarius now, the sign of travel, expansion and philosophy. (Think travel expands philosophy.) This configuration is looked to by astrologers as explaining alot of what's going on in Iraq and also the divistation of Katrina and since Pluto is the planet that changes EVERYTHING, we're also seeing the melt down of the Bush administration. As Pluto is now at the very last degrees of Sag. (although it wont leave for another year), we're having fewer and fewer days when Pluto is not going to be the final planet the moon connects with, and thus activities started in our personal lives - not just the big world picture - will more and more frequently have this Pluto theme of change, transform, get to the truth, get rid of what's not working. So, curious about it's effects on personal lives, I consulted the I Ching, "What is the significance of Pluto at the last degree of the sign it is in?"

As I have been more aware of the devistating effects of Pluto, I was very pleased to receive:

42.1 > 20. Increase > View.

Reinforced, he makes great changes.
Very auspicious.
No guilt.

With good feeling and generousity abounding this is the time to accomplish your most important designs. What ever great effort you wish to make, make it now. And you should not feel at all guilty that this accomplishment was due in part to the unselfish, sincere help of others.
--Sam Reifler

After typing this, it occurs to me that this interpretation tells the best use of Pluto, but interesting if you interpret that line as a negative, I mean, one can see how if you were in a position of power - say held political office - and felt you were "reinforced", that is that you had God on your side, of just that the voters wanted you, you'd be able to make great changes and you wouldn't feel guilty for a minute. Perhaps this then explains the change line leading to View? The need to then travel and visit the regions of the world, to see if the changes really are auspcious? Anyway, I was mostly interested in how this line up of planets effected us little people in our own affairs, as I was thinking here Pluto is causing extreme highs and lows, dissatisfactions and change. Maybe the Baby Boomers reaching retirement age and all the changes that will cause in society. But this answer encourages me to feel it's a time for feeling less constrained and to go after what we really want, that the changes may cause upset, but not catastrophe. And of course, with View, after making one change, a person can pause and look to see it it was an improvement, and what the next one should be.

Hi Rosada,

Its a really interesting reading 42.1 - 20. The image of the changing line for me is like the first line just 'disappearing', taking it out of all the situations involved and giving them instead a great view. I personally find 20 a little unsettling at times, as the view seems more like a glimpse and change or splitting apart is immenent.

Maybe the Yi is saying, Pluto's aspects give us a meaningful view of the future, and you are increased by this knowledge. You can probably make improvements to your life now with this knowledge, with no decrease to others. These changes will allow you to prosper in the future however things work out on a global level.

"Thus, even during a good month, Pluto has been the planet of last degree several times a week."

Puzzled about this. Pluto cannot be at the tail end of every sign, it is at the end of Sagittarius now, and the moon is there only 2 days or so every month. All other days it is in another sign, without a Pluto at the end. This month only 1-2 and 28-29 have this difficult ending. So in those days it would be the way you say.

There is one nice thing about Pluto though. It is possible to "make friends", accept him, and then all that power will work for you instead of against you. If you really want to change, you can use Pluto as an ally. It asks for one difficult thing though: total honesty, in all respects. Otherwise he can make you trip badly.

Right now the planets are lined up so...

Venus 10 Leo
Mercury 11 Cancer
Jupiter 13 Sagittarius
Uranus 18 Pisces
Saturn 21 Leo
Neptune 21 Aquarius
Mars 24 Aries
Sun 26 Gemini
Pluto 27 Sagittarius

The Moon entered Leo this morning. As Venus is the planet of earliest degree, the first planet the moon will make a connection with will be Venus. Then it will move on to semi-sextile Mercury, trine Jupiter, inconjunct Uranus, conjunct Saturn, oppose Neptune and trine Pluto. Thus the last aspect the Moon will make before leaving the sign it is in will be a trine to Pluto.

Or so you would think. Actually, because the Sun moves one degree a day, by the time the moon gets up to Pluto on Tuesday the Sun will have past it and be at 28 degrees Gemini, so the last aspect the moon will make before leaving the sign it is in will be a sextile to the Sun. Avery pleasant final aspect so astrologers will probably counsel their clients that these are good days for initiating action

Tuesday evening the moon will enter Virgo and then it will make different connections with the planets, but in pretty much the same order. It will now sextile Mercury, square Jupiter etc. and finally make its last aspect to Pluto, which this time will be the difficult square, so astrologers will probably discourage folks from launching new agendas at this time.

And so it goes.
Hope this made it more clear.

It might be interesting, Brad, to ask the IC what is the significance of Pluto being reduced to a non-planet? As Pluto rules huge changes, like war and the eccological distruction of the planet, perhaps its being demoted even though it's still there, is symbolic of human conciousness being in denial about these sweeping changes.

No deep meaning to that last line, folks. I just liked it cause it sounds sort of snippy. :)

As I am also interested in Astrology, I felt free to ask...

Me:

"What is the significance of Pluto being reduced to a Kuiper-Belt-Object?"

Yi:

35, 4,6, to 2

Would guess that the gut feeling from last year, when I learned about his downgrading, was not a bad idea: Let us retain his astrological meaning. :)

Fire/Light over earth (35): He is, after all, a light in the sky.

Line 4 changing: Hamsters are hiding things. Progress in that way would bring danger.

Line 6 changing: His power is put to good use when we punish our own city with his aid.

I would read 2 as conservativism in its best sense. And: Get friends in the west and south, forego friends in the east and north.

The meeting of the International Astronomical Union, where Pluto got downgraded, took place in Praha, Czech Republic. This is to the east or north for 80% of the Western asrtological world. What this means for the Aussies and Kiwis as well as for the Lithuanians, I dunno. ;)

Rosada,
Thank you for asking this question. No matter how you interpret it the reply brings much hope. At least I was much heartened. Maybe there is a good side to old Hades, whether we deemed him debunked as planet or not.

The b) commentary for the moving line on p. 598 of Wilhelm states that 'those below do not use it for their own convenience'. I am wondering if you or anyone else has tried to make sense of this in relation to the question? Would be interested in hearing further opinion.

Also do you work with Sabian symbols? The Sabian symbol for Pluto's current degree (Actually 28 degrees because in S.S. you always go to the next higher degree unless the degree is spot-on.) is:

A splendidly built bridge, a heritage of unknown ages, still spans the beautiful and wildly primitive stream.

Again I appreciate your posting this question and reply.

Best regards,

Ken Wanamaker

Yes, totally clear now. Thanks for explaining. I think I should brush up my astrology a bit.

Interesting toss, Soshin.

35.
The superior man himself brightens his bright virtue.

Pluto has been traditionally associated with mass movements. Perhaps this down grading to a single rock indicates it is time for people to use the power of transformation to work on themselves.

Nine in the fourth place means:
Progress like a hamster.
Perseverance brings danger.

In times of progress it is easy for strong men in the wrong places to amass great possessions.

- Certainly we have seen unpresedented fortunes being amassed by individuals in the last twenty years, giving these people a power that is not necessarily a good thing. And of course George Bush is considered to be the most powerful man in the world even though his approval rating is only around %20.

But such conduct shuns the light of day.
And since times of progress are also always times in which dubious procedures are inevitably brought to light, perseverance in such action always leads to danger.

- Hmm..thinking how our armed forces are made up now only of volunteers, thus the general population, particularly those who oppose war, has been able for sometime to be detached from personal involvement but now things have reached a tipping point where everyone is realizing we're all affected.

As the results of the inappropriate practices of wealthy individuals, the government and large corporations become obvious, we finally come to realize this giving our power away, not voting, not being involved, is not leading anywhere good.

Nine in the top means:
Making progress with the horns is permissable
Only for the purpose of punishing one's own city.
To be conscious of danger brings good fortune.
No blame.
Perseverance brings humiliation.

- The death/rebirth/transformative power of Pluto is only to be used for working on one's own issues, not for blowing up other cities. To be concious of danger, to accept responcibility, to not acquise and maybe to be aware of one's own cycles - particularly the tendancy to go to extremes - like being bipolar - is the best use of Pluto.

No blame.

- We all have these issues, it's what we're here for, to experience the contrasts.

Perseverance brings humiliation.

- We can't go on like this, we gotta transform now.

2. The Receptive.

- That's fascinating about the north and east, Soshin!

The superior man who has breath of character carries the outer world.

- Seeing this as meaning that Pluto has made us concious of power, but now that it has been downgraded perhaps this indicates we are now to get in touch with out individual power, realize how we all contribute to the group experience, how it is NOT just one powerful person controling everything, but that we all create our realities, we all have the power to create the world.

Hi Ken,

For those who don't know, Sabian Symbols are a set of images that have been ascribed to each of the 360 degrees of the astrological wheel. The images are wildly different, one degree has the image of Indians doing a war dance, another is of a Chinese washer woman, another of a bird. Anyway, many people have found that the images are meaningful. Like this one for Pluto might suggest awareness of Pluto at this time offers a way to bridge over a difficult situation. Or we may find we actually are driving over a bridge if this degree connects with one of our own planets today. Anyway, I got into them for awhile, but got kinda overwhelmed. Like one more system to help you decide if you should get out of bed. Easier to just do it.

If people are more interested you can find out about them by googlingSabian Symbols.

I should be able to find out if Pluto 'works' or not. It is transiting my natal sun. So far it looks as if it is quite something... Phew!

Maybe KBO's also have an influence. Or maybe astrology and astronomy have less to do with each other than both astrologers and astronomers think. After all signs and constellations have not such a strong correlation either, and astronomers still see it as the most important proof that astrology is wrong.

I think we were ready as a species to take something with a roughly twenty year cycle (roughly Pluto's transit through a sign) and assign to this a meaning of social upheaval because (duh) that's roughly the span of one human generation, and we all know how one of those will want to rebel against another.

Read a book some years ago, written at the end of Cold War (1988) when the discussion about the arms race was in full bloom.

As it is only available in German, I try to translate:

A monument should be raised in each bigger town. It should show an atomic bomb. Not necessarily the real thing but a good enough copy.

And there should be a writing attached to it, something like:

I am a part of your fortitude which is missed by you now.
I am your wrath, your hatred, your desperation, your eagerness for power.
I am the destructiveness which lived in you.

Now I feel cold.

Please let me come home again.

The author is astrologer and spoke about Pluto.

Just wanted to add this one.
