Hello,
I asked the Yi: What if I choose Pottery?
I received 8.2> 29
Here is what I see:
Hex 8-I am seeking belonging and connection with my art and choosing a medium. I am also seeking my way in the world and a direction in life.
Line 2- I think it is saying to connect with my natural affinities and inner heart- I have always loved working with clay in one form or another. When I go to craft fairs it is the pottery booths I stop at. I love the medium but I have been so afraid to choose something and "feel stuck" that I have chosen nothing instead.
Hex 29- I need to work though the deep dark parts of this and my own psyche. I am terrified to make the leap- to choose a medium- to choose clay- to just choose. My heart says I would be VERY happy in clay but my brain comes up with all kinds of reasons why I "should" not pick it.

Am I reading this correctly? What do others see?

I think Yi might be telling you to relax a little via 8.2. You may be "losing your dignity" by obsessing too much over making the right choice. There is no ultimate correct choice. Is there a way for you to try pottery in a non-committal way first? (I assume you are asking about a college major...?) Perhaps you could sign up for a short class at a local pottery studio, even a one-day workshop.

I think the 29 is showing what may happen if you continue to over-analyze what you should or shouldn't do and let your brain insist on seeing things in black and white terms. It's possibly that doing pottery might not be the right thing, but you never know where it could lead. Go with your gut feeling, which seems to lead you towards pottery and clay, and see where it takes you. Best of luck!

Thank you mulberry,
I wish it was a college major... I graduated 7 years ago with a Studio Art degree at the time I stayed with sculpture because I did not want to choose a medium. ;) Same problem different day...
I keep getting sucked into this question about materials when it comes to my work. Perhaps it is my way of avoiding actually working on my art...
I do feel drawn to clay - I think I will sign up for another class and see if I am still loving it.

29 is also good for centering as a general metaphor for life.
Unusual tip:
try learning to center one-handed

You rang? I see you standing by your sculptures and your potter's wheel.

You gotta feel it. This is how you relate to the world. It has to come from your heart.

This is a very interesting metaphor- perhaps I am grasping here but you must center your pots before you can throw them... ;)

:D I wish I could make this a BIGGER smile to reflect what is on my face.
Thanks for this.
I am completely terrified of making a choice no matter how right it feels. I think I will be meditating on this for a little while but it feels to strong to ignore. Another class is definatly in order. :)

Hi,

I can relate with the "which medium" question. Facing something similar those days... urgh!!! ;)

When I get 29 , sometimes it feels like I have to do THAT dive. Gather my wits and just do it. Only by actually get into that you will know if it resonates or not, if that specific medium helps you express what you need to express. Be one with it, and see if that group- you and the clay- can work well together. A medium is a medium .. what what you do -what you want to express- is what is important, imo.

en-joy !!!

en , as 29 ;)

YES!!! It feels just like that... I signed up for a three hour class in two weeks. It's not perfect, I would rather commit to something for a few months, but I will take what I can get. So far, with my previous work with clay, it feels like something I can get my fingers into. ;) I feel relieved actually - like I don't need to stress about it so much, just do what I can and however much I can. Thanks you for your response.

I have known several persons who took up pottery, and the only one who was moderately successful practiced cutie–pie pottery -- you know, dwarfs, mushrooms and gingerbread houses, which I detest and think you probably would too, but fine art pottery doesn't sell. The combination of 8 and 29 suggests to me the Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terracotta_Army

Could you possibly combine pottery and sculpture to create figures of persons? I mean, memorial figures of persons -- perhaps a substitute for tombstones, figures of children or pets -- anything a person cherishes. I would expect to pay $500 or more for such an artistic rendering, even for mantelpiece size, and I think others would too. With such a specialty I think you could make a living at pottery.

Yes I would detest that. ;)

This gave me the chills. I have actually been thinking about that. I don't just see bowls and cups here but sculptures. Maybe large maybe not??? Not sure yet where this will go but I have been working with heads for a really long time and feel like I really need to develop this more. Animals- YES! People- YES! This "feels" like where I need to go.
Thank you. :D

hi kim,

it looks like you have come up with a fair amount of meaning here so I'm gonna be short: your reading made me think of how often I've realized in working with clay, that it takes quite a while to find one's own rhythm in it, one's signature, distinguishing mark. I'd say, as a medium, it can make a good starting point - the rest you can find out in the e-motions, gestures and patterns that clay brings up

you might find this video interesting . .

best of luck with your work!

Thank you very much. :)
I have been sitting with this reading, just feeling it out, taking in what others have said and really for the first time in a long time I feel really calm. It is so strange- esp. for me. I have spent the past 12 years struggling with what I wanted to work with. I feel really centered now that I have allowed myself to see clay as a medium I can live with. I completely agree with the tendencies of clay- I have worked with it some and every time it surprises me. I would say I am defiantly one to let the clay have it's head (most of the time).
Thank you for the video- Perfection all around.:bows:
