This is a very difficult question to answer but I thought I'd ask the I-ching anyway to see if it would give some insight.

What is my purpose in life?

Received Hexagram 55.6 into Hexagram 30

Now, from what I understand, I know Hexagram 55 indicates putting too much energy/emotion into something that you are not sure of. Maybe wanting something, but not fully understanding what you are wanting. I think I want something (ex. like a MA in Finance/Financial Engineering), but maybe thats not my purpose. I am not sure since line 6 is unfavorable does that mean I'm investing too much mental energy into something I think I want? Hexagram 30 is about capturing opportunities or 'shining bright' to get what you want. Any other thoughts?

I feel like you're probably the most capable person in dealing with this sort of question, but I'll just apply a few things to this:

Abundance > Splitting > Fire

There is thunder and lighting, and the face of a crumbling mountain is what faces you, the fire spreads and spreads.

Perhaps there are things you must get through (Splitting Apart), in order for the fruition of your great ambitions and abundant goals to succeed persistently. Think about what is currently in your way, and be strong in the face of them, because they are already too high, and crumbling. Then you follow the path of fire (deep thought and intellect).

But most of this is really up to you, as you know what you want out of life.

Six at the top means:
His house is in a state of abundance.
He screens off his family.
He peers through the gate
And no longer perceives anyone.
For three years he sees nothing.
Misfortune.

Is your current path too selfish? This may be something to consider.

Hmm, well that's an interesting take. I don't really understand about someone's path being too selfish though...I mean isn't everyones path selfish since its what they want to do? If getting a degree in a specific subject matter is selfish then I don't know what the solution to that would be. So is the i-ching advising I take a less selfish path? What does that even mean to take a less selfish path?

Perhaps the Yi is suggesting that your purpose is to make the most of this abundant season or stage of your life. In other words, rather than suggesting to you a specific direction or action, it could be saying that vigorous living in and of itself fulfills your purpose.

"Brilliance conjoined with movement signifies abundance. The king has still greater possibilities before him. He inspires his people and they respect him. He shines like a sun before the whole world. But then the sun at its zenith begins to decline."

If considering the Yi's answer from this perspective, how might you develop fully your strongest aptitudes and talents to share with the world? What other sources of wise council or like minded others might you seek out to help you identify (and cultivate) your most brilliant gifts? How much risk are you willing to take to explore greater possibilities?

Soulofpsyche, I agree with making the most of this season and living vigorously which I've been doing. I've come to the conclusion to stop worry and just partake in activities that I enjoy - and let these activities define me. Because it is what you do that defines who you are and type of person you are. I'm sticking with this philosophy and hopefully will find a fulfilling end. In terms of wise council, since I have an inclination for metaphysics/etymology I've decided to seek out my old professors to see what their advice is even though I don't seek a career in it since its not practical. I'm willing to take risks but afraid to repeat the same mental habits and things I did before....but thanks for posing these questions -

My take is to make your own fate, don't let fate just happen. Hexagram 30 could be that turning the lights right up will reveal your inadequacies and a need for change. Hope it helps. :)

I think Yi may be having a little fun with you. By taking your life's purpose to the max of importance (in your head), you effectively will screen everyone and everything else out from your life. I don't think that's always a bad thing, but it's something you must be prepared for. Same with your subjects, screening out what comes naturally to you and what you receive pleasure in doing, could be you won't see nor hear from them again. So it's a good time to take inventory of your gifts, and not screening them out simply because they don't feed into this main purpose in life, even if you knew what that actually was.

Together with 30, I think Yi's message to you is to lighten up about your purpose for being here, and just enjoy being here.

My 2 cents: you focus on the wrong things which sets you apart from the people around you. Your goal is to go out into the light and connect. That is what you will remember at the end of your life: these little sparks of connection between you and others, those fleeting moments of pure bliss. That is what life's about.
