Are they supposed to indicate the near future..what's coming into being....OR do they give the overall context of the query?

Either. Look at each and then decide which one fits better.

For me, it's either a 'resulting' hexagram, or a 'modifying' hexagram. It's never a 'context' hexagram for me, because for me, the primary hexagram supplies the context/the issue.

Well, "modifying" sounds like what I mean (maybe?) by " context". In other words, it provides additional information that helps to give the primary hexagram more "body"...offering a larger perspective. I'm not sure if that makes sense.

Yeah, it makes perfect sense. That's what I mean by 'modifying'. The primary hexagram supplies the issue or focus, and the relating hexagram supplies a modification of that meaning.

So, for instance 52.4.6>62 comes across as something like 'stilling yourself in a way that keeps your head down'.

Unless, like I said, it's a resulting hexagram, in which case it's 'stilling yourself in a way that tends in the direction of keeping your head down'.

Brilliantly put, that man! (I thought you were busy packing?)

One way to sum this up is to look to the second hexagram for your personal position, perspective, relationship (etc) to the situation. (Unless you are consulting about some situation in which you don't figure at all.) Your personal 'context' can be hope, aspiration, fear, stance (any of which can easily become the outcome)...

Another example: 8 changing to 51, a chosen union rocked by emotional shockwaves. 51, of course, also provides the basic strategy for riding those waves.

Hi Clarissa-
I tend to look at the Zhi Gua as the direction, but not necessarily the destination. You can be headed in a Northerly direction, but that doesn't mean you'll end up in the arctic circle.
