Quick question about number 8

Hi everyone!

This is a question, not so much about how #8 applies to a particular personal situation, but more about a certain line I came across. I got #8 and am thinking about how it applies to my question, but in the Wilhelm/Baynes version, the judgement has a line saying "Inquire of the oracle once again whether you possess sublimity, constancy and perseverance..." I was wondering if people here take that as a direction to continue with whatever reading they were initially doing. In other words, if I ask a question and get #8, should I now cast again, asking whether I possess certain traits?

I noticed that in LiSe's version, there is no mention of going back to the oracle... so now I'm wondering if that notion is particular to one version or not.

Any thoughts or help with this would be appreciated. I don't want to go into what the question was just yet, because I like to do my own thinking about it first, and I'm not sure whether or not I'm being instructed to go back to the oracle...

many thanks

Jazzy.

The original doesn't say to ask again. That's a mistranslation.
It might suggest that you ask yourself if you're asking the right questions.
If you are you may already be where you want to be.
If not, maybe you don't belong.

Thanks, Bradford! That makes a lot of sense. The feeling I was getting when trying to apply 8 to my question was that the question I asked wasn't really the right one, or rather, it wasn't phrased in the most succinct and direct way.

Yeah, I read "ask again" as "ask a better question ." Asking the right questions is probably more important in life than than some of the answers we get.

Did you get hexagram 8 unchanging?

Regarding asking the second question, I used to do this by asking, "Is there anything else I should know about that hexagram 8 I just received?"

The reason for asking another question seems to be explained this way: to determine who will be the center person or leader of the group, if it a question of a new group. The center person needs strong leadership skills and extraordinary commitment. But if someone is not aiming to be the leader, why would they need 'sublimity, constancy, and perseverance'?

There is no such thing as a dumb question..when you are trying to learn. I don't think the Yi plays games either, because you didn't ask the right question, so therefore I'm going to give you an inaccurate response. Also I don't think Yi has an ego either. If I do not understand the answer, I will ask again with the answer given before to dive deeper. For instance; where or what do I need to bond with? Or ,I will seek advice. Which is sometimes more than often, apart of the plan.. maybe could be why you got hex 8 unchanging.
