Ive decided to quit my job. I asked the I Ching about my decision. I got hexagram 17 with lines 1,3,5,6 changing into hexagram 56. At first glance it seems to indicate that I should go ahead with the decision but that i will wander for some time in the near future. To be honest im unsure on how to interpret the hexagram I got. Any help would be appreciated.

According to Alfred Huang, when we have four moving lines it is best to consult only the uppermost of the non-moving lines. In this case that would be 17.4. 17.4 says that if we follow our path with acquisitiveness, we will be unlucky, but if we follow with sincerity and intelligence, what problem could there be. This stresses your state of mind in quitting, not whether or not to quit. I have often found that Yi is unwilling to make our decisions for us and this is a good example of that.

Thank you for your response, Ginnie. I dont personally use Alfred Huang's method for interpreting lines, but Joel Biroco's which recommends consulting the lower unchanged line of the second hexagram. That said my mindstate for quitting my job is that im burned out. I work a low paid retail job with nasty customers and a boss who uses people. Im fed up. So I found the Yi's rewsponse peculiar. Hexagram 17 is about following, both a path and people who follow you. Hexagram 56 is about wandering, which made me laugh when I saw it, because ive been having recurrent dreams that keep telling me that im going to start travelling soon. I just found it a strange coincidence.
