Hi-
As I build my relationship with the YI I thought I’d ask a very specific question that I knew I could validate soon.

I asked how will he respond.
YI answered 20.2.5.6–> 7

here was his exact response: I attached it. (He’s a profesional athlete who just received a contract on the other side of the world we’re figuring out how to navigate that as a couple)

but this answer struck me as interesting because of the relating hex. 7 to organize a plan.

I know some people read the relating hex as the background, others as the outcome. I tend to read it as an outcome but often I’m stumped. This reading could go either way, I think but I was hoping some of the more experienced readers might have some insight on how they view the relating hex and why. Especially because this answer is very much in alignment with how he responded. DD465FA5-8E54-49B6-AE2B-8660550C13A6.jpeg

One metaphor I found helpful doesn't regard the Zhi Gua as the outcome but more like a sign. If you saw a sign with an arrow that read North, that doesn't mean you are going to the North Pole. If the sign just said said Stop, that doesn't mean you won't start going again.

Thank you Bradford. Beautiful metaphor. I really like that and can think back on several instances where that is the case. :)))

insight on how they view the relating hex and why.
Similar to what Bradford shared, I often start out by thinking of the resulting hexagram as a suggested approach or outlook I can consider towards whatever situation I'm asking about. It seems similar to me to the idea of 'a sign' about what 'direction' to take.

I don't often look at the resulting hexagram as the outcome or answer however. Mostly because I don't usually ask about an outcome of a situation - but more how I can best deal with, or approach, or address the situation.

But then again, I'm not a big fan of fortune-telling, nor mind-reading. I seek a response that offers me advice on how I might best respond, but doesn't offer me a fait accompli outcome, nor a response that tries to tell me what someone else is thinking or feeling. Most of the time, I barely have a handle on what I'm thinking and feeling for god's sake - so perhaps that's where the Yi and can best offer assistance!

Best, D

The relating hexagram can start off as the sea in which we are swimming and may, if we swim strongly enough in the right general direction, become the place where we end up.

Hi Surfergirl,

Surfergirl: ".....some insight on how they view the relating Hex and why."

A different way:

This situation,20.2.5.6-> 7, is "seen" as a patient(Hex20) who needs to receive therapy(Hex7) to resolve his "situation" using various techniques/methods that act synergistically(lines) with each other and the patient.

example: imagine a TCM therapy:

Hex20= patient with a situation to resolve, something in him is out of balance, by excess, defect or both.

Hex7=
therapy that balances/resolves/cures the situation.

Various techniques/methods/steps that act synergistically between themselves and the patient:

line2=
acupuncture in the meridian B.
line5= moxibostao on the meridian E.
line6= acupuncture on meridian F.

The result of the therapy is related to the synergistic action between the various "lines" and the patient.Let us say that the patient, the techniques applied and the result of the therapy are one indivisible thing and communicate/collaborate with each other in a synergetic way.

- Hex7 is the therapy applied to the patient(Hex20) , through various procedures/techniques/methods (lines 2, 5 and 6) so that the "situation of the patient(Hex20) is balanced/resolved.

Cheers,
