I first posted this in the wrong place, and apologize - I really am a newbie!

When asking about whether/how to proceed in a relationship which has hit a strange patch, I got 29, changing to 2 (9s at 2 and 5). I am still very much a novice at interpreting the I Ching, but think that while the 29 is about danger in proceeding, it is softened by the change lines morphing it into 2, if I stay open and not attached to any timetable or outcome. What it seems to say to me, is that I am best to be open, bring myself to the relationship, but not pushing, rather letting things reach their own level in their own time. This whole period in my life seems to be about learning patience and being, rather than doing, so this result appears consistent.

But, since I am so new to asking the I Ching, I would like to learn from others with deeper knowledge.

Also, I've never received a hexgram which reads the same, right side up or upside down, before this. It would seem to be an unusual hexagram for that characteristic. I wonder what that brings to the message?

OK, back after thinking about this some more. One of the interpretations I read last night said to "ask again". I thought I should first try to clearly understand the hexagram & change lines in reponse the first question before asking again, so I sat on it. I have been unsure whether to continue in this relationship because he seems to change so much from day to day, encounter to encounter. We've been seeing each other for a little over 10 months and he, seemingly all of the sudden, can't seem to figure out whether he wants to be freinds or lovers (why not both??). I've had the feeling that there is some opposing force (not necessarily a "rival", in the romantic sense, just an opposing force of some sort).

At any rate, I decided to go ahead and ask again. Got 5 changing to 42 (with 9s at lines 2 and 3, and a 6 at line 6). The answer seems to me to underscore the earlier message to be patient, not so much pushing or doing, but an emphasis on being receptive. If it is the same message as the first (29 to 2), why would I be advised to ask again?

Hex 29.2,5 >2

As you have already said this is not a time to stand up and be counted, it is a time to retire into the background while he decides what he wants from the relationship. Pushing the issue will only cause unnecessary drama, so bide your time and you will find success.

It does not say anywhere to ask the same question twice?

"Learning,You are fortunate in that the reply has stressed the yang lines of the Abysmal. Indeed they are in somewhat better shape than the other lines due to their strength and their central positions. This bodes well for your relationship provided you heed the counsel by taking things a step-at-time (line two) and by not becoming overly ambitious about the prospects. (line 5) Hexagram two provides the additional praise of perseverance. Definitely not time to become mighty in the forward striding toes. I wish you well in this relationship. When a hexagram is stood upon its head it is called the inverse. (from inverted) I have been aware of this but have never looked into the implications. There are other hexagrams whose inverse is the same as the parent hexagram..including hexagram 30, The Clinging, which follows the Abysmal. I am wondering if anyone else has any insight as to the meaning of or uses of a hexagrams inverse. Also note that most frequently the inverse and the parent are next to each other, as hexagrams 13 and 14, 57 and 58, 9 and 10. It would make an interesting study to relate a hexagram to its inverse. For example Fellowship With Men and Possession In Great Measure. Can one really possess greatly if on has no others to share his wealth with? "

Thank you both for responding to my post, which I didn't (and still don't) know how to move from Devination, where I incorrectly posted it. I guess that's why my name is Learning? I quoted Magictortoise's response above, so the whole thread will be in one place, to make it easier to find, in case someone else is looking for information about this. I hope that is OK.

I can't find the reference to "ask again" any longer. I was "googling" (I don't even know enough yet to figure out what/which book(s) to get) hex 29 changing to 2 and one of the interpretations/commentaries included it - I thought it was strange when I read it, so it stuck in my mind. But, I can't find it again.

Being so new to (not more than 6 months of really trying to understand) the I Ching, I so appreciate both of you taking the time to reply, and feel encouraged that my understanding of what I read in the various interpretations and commentaries was directionally correct. I will take the I Ching's counsel to heart and "bide my time", while quietly persevering.

Also, thank you, Magictortoise, for explaining what the central position of the Yang lines brings to my 29.2 (I didn't yet know about the general concept of strength in the central lines), and for the information on the inverse hexagrams. When I have learned more about the I Ching, I may take some time to research the matching inverse issue more thoroughly (if I still remember my curiosity about it at that later time....).
