Dear community. Haven't been here for a while and just received a reading that was so tremendously helpful: 30.6 to 55. Most of it really clicked for me I think but I would appreciate any insights regarding line 6 "He executes the chief - the captives are not so ugly" and the last bit "Abundance has many causes; few connections for the Traveller."

Many thanks

Line 30.6 describes a war, as ordered by the king (someone with authority).
The chief(s) or leader(s) of the enemy are killed, while their ugly/nasty followers are captured.
Resulting 55 shows that the war is successful and a time of plenty follows.
few connections for the Traveller - I don't know where you get that text from.

What is it you asked or inquired about? That too is an essential part of your reading, as much as the response is. (And I'm curious whose translation you are referring to?)

Hi.
At the bottom of the reading it says:
Pair
Abundance forms a pair with Hexagram 56, Travelling:
'Abundance has many causes; few connections for the Traveller.'

Hi.
The original question was:
"Looking for help understanding my next step" so from that point the clarity and abundance hexagrams resulted. I don't know whose translations were in the reading, I just quoted what was said there. In a way the reading felt like it had directly plugged into my inner processes of change, growth and renewal over the last months and that it was directly describing the optimal and necessary pathway for me - apart from the two lines that were not so obvious. What it also showed me extremely clearly was that I/we am/are embedded in a universe that can clearly and unmistakably respond to a need for understanding and guidance. Whereas that may be quite obvious for some people, that has by no means always been obvious for me, so that experience was quite fulfilling and showed that I am not alone in trying to figure things out. I was discussing this experience yesterday evening with someone and the term "satiated" came to my mind, a feeling of having been filled, which I think is quite a good way of looking at it.

Sorry, but I'm still confused. Above is the question you asked and you say the response is:
30.6 to 55.

... and you ask for our help in understanding this reading. That's fine (and i understand this) but then you say:
... apart from the two lines that were not so obvious ....

... which sounds like your question's response had multiple moving lines? And the answer wasn't 30.6 > 55?

I kept the PDF of the reading. Right at the top it says "Hexagram 30.6 to 55". Under changing lines it says line 6 which was the first unclear point that is now clear (he executes the chief...). At the end of Abundance under Pair
is where it says:
Abundance forms a pair with Hexagram 56, Travelling:
'Abundance has many causes; few connections for the Traveller.'
So I don't see any multiple moving lines.
Hope that is clearer

So it seems the reading is pointing to Hex 56 Travelling and the "few connections for the Traveller" which is not clear for me yet

Hexagram 30 with the 6th line moving gives you Hexagram 55, NOT 56! So, we are all confused by the mysterious 'traveler' - where did she come from? And why are you mentioning her?

I'd suggest that if you understand line 30.6, that you take that as your answer, and let the traveler go wherever she wants to. It's either that, OR your reading is really 30.1 > 56 - in which case you have to start over with an entirely new reading. (Maybe someone mixed up the lines/changes - it happens sometimes!)

OR ... perhaps your reading is actually 30.6 > 55, and the 'Traveler' was someone's metaphor for you! But even here, to tell you that you, have 'few connections' doesn't make any sense to me either.

So ???

Hahaha, OK so much confusion that is on its way out. How about I just upload the PDF and then everyone can see what I'm on about. The part in question is right at the end where it says:
Pair
Abundance (Hex 55) forms a pair with Hexagram 56, Travelling:
'Abundance has many causes; few connections for the Traveller.'
.

Okay, that makes it clear what you're referring to. This PDF is a free Clarity reading (computer generated). I think this part is based on the "Ninth Wing - Ordered Hexagrams" commentary, a part of the traditional "Ten Wings" commentaries which are a part of the Yijing. And it may be related to:

"Feng (Hex. 55) is greatness. When greatness declines, it is bound to lose its place: therefore: Lu (Hex. 56) comes next; eventually a wanderer has nowhere else to go; therefore .... (next is Hex. 57)." (trans. Rutt)

I am not all that familiar with working with hexagram pairs or the progression of the hexagrams but I think this could be saying:

"... even with whatever greatness you achieve, there may come a time when this too will decline and you will need to being to wander again - to figure out the next, next step on your journey." Or ... it's a reminder that we're all temporary 'wanderers' and travelers here on Planet Earth - which is a good thing for all spiritual travelers to remember I think.

I hope that's of some use to you. D

"Abundance has many causes; few connections for the Traveller."
It's the 10th wing, a mnemonic device for pairs. In Wilhelm under 'miscellaneous notes' in his translation, second part of his book.

The pair are two sides of the same coin, you'll never read one of a pair without the presence of the other and this little verse is a way to connect them.

The above is familiar, it is the 10th wing but where that particular sentence comes from not sure, it's very familiar. Oh yes it's Hilary on the sequence/pairs.

Yes! Many thanks. That was worth sorting out as it exactly describes my current fork in the road ahead.

So its like describing the natural cycle of rise and fall in the world of things?

I'm a tad muddled with my 9th and 10th wing....but um it's just a little memory device according to Wilhelm and has meaning of course.

But I don't know why you are focusing on that bit really. Your answer is 30.6>55 So your main focus is 30 line 6 not the little bit about how the sequence in the pairs develops. I mean if it jumps out at you maybe it is relevant but 30.6 is your answer.

55, Abundance is the relating hexagram here there's no reason for you to be looking at 56 really.

30.6 asks you to focus on the main thing, the main goal and let smaller things take second place.

And 30 is a part of the 29/30 pair so that's at least if not more relevant than looking at 55/56.

So in your next step, which was your question, the advice is to be really clear about what the main priority and don't get too side tracked with side issues. Think of the main objective and let the details follow.

Someone called 55 "a time of plenty"
but that is off the mark,
because it is confused with the idea of a cornucopia which is more like
42's imagery of the overflowing basket.

The "plenty" in 55 is "plenty of stuff happening" or 'a whole lotta stuff to do'
Not a plentiful bounty.
Huge difference.

I get it. I took the whole reading to be significant and since that part didn't really make much sense and almost all of the rest did make sense it kind of jarred me.
Maybe its a good idea to give a bit of background story about how it came to the reading. I have practically always been self-employed in 2 service industries ( one was in the forefront and the other kind of on hold) and in the middle of 2019 something that had been on the horizon for some years became highly relevant and I was forced to make a decision and take action (my most important customer for over 15 years had been withholding full payment for services rendered through no fault of my own apart from me tolerating it for too long and which had accumulated to quite an amount and would have expired) that would, in consequence, have serious consequences for me too. So basically I had to involve a lawyer and it went to court and that turned out well for me, but of course, the business relationship was destroyed. I had been trying to avoid this for a long while but without avail.
So in a sense I wasn't all that concerned and took it as an opportunity to have a time out and regroup and rethink, a bit like a sabbatical which had never been viable before. I was also a bit shocked because it was like a betrayal that I had never really thought was possible - but that is how it goes with betrayal, we never think it is possible, maybe that is even the definition of betrayal, something that we never think is possible but definitely IS possible. The idea was to then slowly get back into gainful occupation. Then in 2020 along came Covid and much of the world went into sabbatical, and since I had a few refunds due to me and there were government support programs for business owners available I was fortunately not so adversely affected as a lot of people. I made good use of the time and learned many helpful things and was quite happy to sit things out and go on a more inward journey instead of getting all agitated and neurotic about it. And I am hugely grateful that I was able to do that.
But now since this summer I have the sense that it is time for a complete renewal and restart in maybe a different direction and a whole different focus. Then along comes the reading and the question what out of all the possibilities that are there in every moment is something that I am willing to really identify with and seriously proceed with for the next step in the journey. So the problem is the question of choice and the choice picking up enough energy and momentum so that it is viable and can sustain itself. It seems when things are driven by sheer necessity it is a lot easier to undergo a commitment and stay with it. So for me Hex 30 following from Hex 29 "Repeating chasms" describes the problem of too many possibilities and finding the right angle so that the "king uses that to march out". It also describes the internal push and pull of ideas trying to come into creation after a time when everything was allowed to arise as it did during the lockdowns and the "sabbatical" and maybe a certain reluctance to commit because of the possibility of betrayal lurking around the corner. Some might say its normal to get ripped off in the business world but for me it certainly wasn't normal so all the more shock when it happens.
And then Hex 55 says "do not mourn. A fitting sacrifice at noon." So I read that as say goodby to whatever was and sacrifice being overly concerned and that maybe it's not even so important "what" to commit to exactly but just that it happens because things change all the time anyway.
One way that I look at the statement in 30.6 "He executes the chief, the captives are not so ugly" is that if I get too fixated on finding the "ideal" thing I overlook the fact that other things that appear subordinate (the captives) are not so bad (so ugly) either and are not a mistake. On the other hand, things do tend to organize around a central star or light (further up there is the reference to doubled light gives rise to clarity) so maybe it is referring to executing the chief counterarguments to an idea or star that is gently forming and coming forth from the background.
So that was just a bit of an idea of what this is all about for me. And I guess it's something that is by no means unique to me.

How did you phrase your question exactly?
Betrayal is a nasty thing for sure. Line 30.6 is most probably about your successful court case. The character for 55 literally means 'abundant, plentiful'. This could refer to the monetary gains that winning the court case brought you, and/or it could be metaphorical as to you'll have plenty of new opportunities in the future. It also sounds so apt that the Image of 55 says 'the superior man decides lawsuits and carries out punishments'.
(edit/PS - the 'be not sad' part might mean, you got justice, you were compensated, so don't focus on the sadness)

Hi! The question was "Looking for help understanding my next step". The whole legal issue was over last year summer and I knew in advance what it would mean if I went down that road and it was clear what the outcome would be so I have closure on that. What I did was to voluntarily go on a retreat that was intensified and became mandated through the world situation. And now its time to start the upward spiral out from pure potential into "something" and that something is by no means clear yet. Hence the question about the next step

It just occurred to me that it could also simply be the issue of "better is the enemy of good enough"

It's been picked up before..... @Liselle

Do you think we have another paragraph issue?

Some time ago before forum update people were unable to make paragraphs, it was a glitch. Recently someone else posted a massive chunk of text, really hard to read and now this I'm wondering if there's another issue. Did you try to make paragraphs namuna? If not no big deal but we need to spot forum glitches so let us us know if you tried to put spaces in your post and couldn't. It does make it hard to read with no spaces especially for older ones with glasses

I tried to read it but it's too much and it's too hard............sorry.

The question was "Looking for help understanding my next step".
So your next step is a war, as line 30.6 says. During this war the chief is killed, while the nasty followers of that chief are captured. Your next step needs to be aggressive, and according to official rules.

Yes! Good point but who is the chief and who are the nasty followers and what do I do with them?

It's just telling you to focus on central issues and not waste time on peripheral issues which can be dealt with later. The captives aren't an issue, they're no big problem, not so ugly, it's the chief you're after no the captives. You stand to waste your time dealing with peripheral issues rather than focus on the main issue. Possibly it's a question of mental organisation that's needed

It's funny that in this reading you're looking at all the peripherals rather than the reading also. I'm not knocking it, you've clearly thought a lot about it and you're trying to get a good feel of it but you may be missing the point? The 55 would be where you are, where you're coming from and here there's overwhelm which is a very 55 feeling and the way to deal with overwhelm says 30.6 is to decide what it crucial and what isn't. 30.6 is almost a 'to do' list kind of line. You wake up in the morning and there's a thousand things to do (55) that all seem of equal importance then you think about it and they're not actually, there's one or two things that can wait till another day.

That's your 55 right there, all those possibilities, quite overwhelming and what you don't need is more input, more choices....you just need to focus on the obvious perhaps.

55 is where you're coming from, the whole ambience of the question. In 55 one can feel it's a matter of doing more research into 'what next' but it isn't - there's enough to be going on with already. You aren't looking for the new but to cope with or act on what's there. The problem isn't actually a question of choice, it's not a time of fragile new beginnings but going forward with what there already is.

So what's there? If this is about possibilities take the main one, don't spend time looking round the edges, do the main thing to be done.

The 'king' signifies authority, government, officials. Any chance that you can find new employment/business in such a domain? The line also mentions travelling. The image of the beheaded chief might mean that you take the position of a corrupt high-status individual, or, that you work to enforce justice upon others, or or or (could be so many different things, just jotting ideas here). The followers of that 'chief', what do you do with them - you make sure they're under your control.

The fact that line 30.6 changes here shows that you're now far away from the sort of idyllic situation of hexagram 30 (looking after one's cow). So I think that this cast is urging you to find something new and different.

As an afterthought, if you do stay in your current line of work/business, be ruthless. Anyone who tries to betray you or to be underhanded against you, be tough on them.

In general, and in a nutshell, be aggressive and follow official rules.

Now that throws a different light on the whole thing. My simplistic understanding was that you have whatever situation you have and that 30.6 picks up on that particular way that things are currently panning out and offers the medicine to proceed further, and after taking the medicine for a while or using the prescription it will lead to a new set of circumstances, i.e. 55 that are just around the corner but still below the horizon waiting to become the new now.

So I'm a bit confused now, but not too much

The fact that line 30.6 changes here shows that you're now far away from the sort of idyllic situation of hexagram 30 (looking after one's cow). So I think that this cast is urging you to find something new and different.

As an afterthought, if you do stay in your current line of work/business, be ruthless. Anyone who tries to betray you or to be underhanded against you, be tough on them.

In general, and in a nutshell, be aggressive and follow official rules.
Thanks diamant, that does reflect a lot how I'm feeling about what is called for and what the reading is conveying
