What does Catholicism have to offer me? 33.6 - 31
Is this an image of a retreat into or away from the faith of my childhood? I have rejected it for the majority of my life and only recently looking back to it with curiosity. I wonder if I'm seeing an image of retreating all the way away and letting go of this faith tradition completely. I don't think I would have any regret at all in that, but I'm looking for something and wondering if I can find it in the tradition.

Sticking strickly to the reading...

Fundementals:
A retreat is always 'away' from something.

So you ask, "me + x"?
Yi says, Retreat from X

The less imagination required to understand an answer is usually the correct route.

33.6 indicates that you are in a position where the need for retreat, or to feel safe, no longer applies. Now you can look at the "Catholicism" question in a more "free", objective and thoughtful way.

Thank you both. Both answers make sense to me. I do like the simplicity that retreat is always away from something. It makes 33 seem a lot less complicated in a way since sometimes I want to retreat toward the thing I am asking about.

The retreat can certainly be a retreat towards something that saves you. That's the point of it. You aren't just running away, you're also running towards. And here it is upwards towards Qian, heaven.

So yes you will be retreating towards what you ask about and 33.6 is a lovely line.

Retreat in 33 is a retreat towards as well as away from. You retreat from what harms you towards your refuge. In meditation for example one may be retreating from the world in order to connect with the divine.

Lower trigram mountain reaches up to heaven. A monk or a nun withdraws from the world in order to go towards God.

I don't know how you "filter" what line 6 says but I see this line 33.6 very much in terms of patterns.

for example:

-The relationship that this 33.6 line has with hex33 is very similar to the relationship that the 1.6 line has with hex1.
We see a culmination of the "active force of hex1" in 1.5, making no sense to advance with more "force" in line 1.6... and therefore an arrogance that brings consequences.

in hex33 it is the same... a maximum efficiency action in the act of withdrawal at 33.5, and it does not make sense to want to apply an extra will to withdraw on the 33.6 line, because there is no longer a real reason to continue with this "withdrawal vision".

-This pattern is seen in all the hexagrams where there is a combination of the trigrams heaven above and the sons below (thunder, abysmal and mountain)...a combination of masculines.

It is almost as if these hexagrams were saying: until line 5 we are going to advance with the "theme of the hexagram", but in line 6 we have to reverse because the "maximum efficiency" has already been reached.

but you could also see the pattern of competition that exists in the correspondence between lines 3 and 6 of hex33.
...e.t.c

Hi humblebumble,

What does Catholicism have to offer me?
33.6 to 31 ~ Resonance with the resurrected Christ

Jesus was 33 at the end of his life when he returned home to his Father.

From the WB for Hex 33:

"Nine at the top means:
Cheerful retreat. Everything serves to further.
The situation is unequivocal. Inner detachment has become an established fact, and we are at liberty to depart. When one sees the way ahead thus clearly, free of all doubts, a cheerful mood sets in, and one chooses what is right without further thought. Such a clear path ahead always leads to the good."

Many Blessings!
