My son wants to look at a school in Colorado. We're thinking of flying out next week so he can take an entrace exam, visit the school, and look for housing. I asked the oracle to comment about our trip and got 18.3.5.6 > 29. The images are a bit disturbing: decay, danger, the abyss. The changing lines look fairly positive. I'm not sure what the Yi is getting at. Does 29 warn of some danger?

This says that you seem to be in a hurry to get it all organized very quickly for your son and this in turn may well lead to disputes between you but rest assured what you are trying to achieve is right for him, to give him the best education that you can.

Hex 29 suggests that getting it all organized is going to prove difficult but you are there for a purpose, so the way through is to keeping going and you will succeed in doing what needs to be done.

So, the trip is going to be busy, hard work, lots to do, with the occasional argument, tiring but at the end of the day successful.

Just wondering is this kind of trip something you've done before with him - or is it an issue thats been going on a while ? Its just 29 i find often literally refers to repeated facing of issues yet being unable to rely much on past experience. Having to learn as you go with many unknowns. Yet 18 often deals with fairly long standing issues that need clearing up - so it like without focusing on the moving lines too much you read the two hexagrams as a sentence what would it say ? I'm feeling it as repeatedly trying (29) to rectify something (18) yet kind of trying to do this in the dark (29). Or more positively sorting this out (18) in a possibly rather hit and miss/risky kind of way (doesn't make sense sorry hard to articulate it)

If i do look at the moving lines 18.6 makes me wonder if his heart will be in this particular place or this particular project - its a line that often indicates you need to do your own thing. (I know in US you say 'school' for college/university, so I'm assuming hes late teenage). Wondering if the answer refers to his whole mind set about pursuing this path - don't know bu tmaybe theres something you need to clear up and deal with before you go (18.3, 18.5) Hmm its only just occurred to me how literal this answer may be for you as it refers to dealing with troubles caused by the father, lol

Thanks for the responses. They are very helpful.
Trojan commented : "Its just 29 i find often literally refers to repeated facing of issues yet being unable to rely much on past experience." Let me give a little background.
My son is in his early 20s. He is bright but never liked formal education, so after high school he got a job and worked for a few years. In January the company he was working for underwent a corporate change and he was let go. The shock of losing his job led him to want to get a college degree. My wife found a college in Colorado (some 2000 miles from our home) that has a program which he likes. He says he wants to make a go of it.

The tension in the reading may refer to the long-standing disagreement my wife and I had with our son about the importance of higher education. He wanted to do things his way and we felt he was making a mistake. I will be flying with him to Colorado to investigate the school in person and to make necessary arrangements if he really wants to go there. So the comment about not being able to rely on much past experience is right on target. This is something we should have done 4 or 5 years ago, and I have my worries that it may not work out, despite my son's good intentions.

Interesting. If the 18 is referring to him (and you as parents) making up for lost time educationally then line 6 makes me think could be eventually he finds he actually doesn't need/want this kind of education, doesn't need to 'serve the kings and princes' of formal education, he can transcend that and make his own way. Thats just a thought, there are to other lines to consider which will probably make more sense to you than me because i think they ask you to consider the past of this whole thing. 18 even concerns ones ancestors apparently, so maybe it might help to think of your own fathers role in your life, in terms of what he wanted for you, what you want for your son , what your son wants for himself......Hmm or maybe you were just literally asking about the trip and I've gotten too psychological lol......re the actual trip may be an idea to double check arrangements

Hmm good luck anyway :)

Don't know if this will help much, but one aspect of hexagram 18 is about correcting errors that were made in the past. Hexagram 29 is not just about danger but is also about teaching and learning. It informs us that we must not skip any lessons before going on to the next level. It is saying in essence to complete a course before we start a new one. But over all it says that the teacher completes one step of learning before he/she starts the next.

Does this make any sense in this context?

Trojan and Gene,

Thanks for your comments. My question was general but had to do with asking how the trip itself would go (traveling, spending time with my son, etc) and what its outcome would be (will he find this school helpful? will he be successful there? is it a wise move at this time? etc). I left it open-ended assuming that the Yi would comment on what was important. The response seems in part to be that I need to look at my role as a father in my son's life, which is certainly true. Your other observations are well taken. Gene's comment about taking the next step applies. My son realized when he lost his job that his next step had to be to get more education.

Hi Tony,

I agree with Gene about "This is something we should have done 4 or 5 years ago."

18 says: There is something that was not taken care of in the past, or by the father. Now is the time to carefully make it right.
18.3 In the past, there was something the father didn't handle correctly, or that wasn't done right in the past. Now is the time to make it right, so that there won't be any remorse. Don't worry if the correction involves being a bit pushy.
18.5 Something was neglected or allowed to get corrupted, by the past situation, or by the father. It's time for a new beginning with the help of people qualified to assist.
18.6 Sometimes, self-development is a higher and worthier goal than social status.

29 Water is rushing through the ravine. Water is true to its nature. If people are also true to their nature, they will reach their goal and learn what really matters. These lessons should be repeated. If people are not fully aware of themselves and the situation, they're up the creek without a paddle. (Not a good thing in Colorado!)

As I read it, the Yi supports your goals and advises that you carefully check out the situation - just as you're doing. The potential danger is with a bad choice about the long term education, not a risky journey.
