My lease is up and I need to find a new place to live. I'm currently in a safe neighborhood near the ocean and would love something similar.

I asked the Yi if I will find a home or apartment that I will be happy in. The answer was 54.5, which I take to mean to keep my expectations realistic and even humble, and I will be happy with where I end up. I am feeling a bit lackadaisical about finding somewhere but need to be out of my current place in 2 weeks. The advice however does encourage that a positive situation (changing to Hex 58) will come. Perhaps an apartment that's a bit run down &/or not in the ideal location (LiSe's 'don't demand the best place or perfection')?

I then asked the Yi how will I find my next place and received 51.6. ???? I guess I'd better start looking for a place before the lightening hits me... I was hoping for a clue on the best way to look as I've combed ads, looked at a couple of options but nothing feels like a fit.

58 doesn't promise a future scenario. I am like a stuck record on this I know but its a pity so many newbies think the relating hexagram is some future outcome because i think it really screws up their understanding. The relating hexagram generally refers to the question, whats behind the question, the context, background, where you are...which can sometimes include the future but its so much broader than some particular outcome.

Anyway you have just one line moving so IMO this is very important. 51.6 tells you not to panic. It shows others panicking at some distance but advises you not be infected by that. So distance yourself from any feeling of panic...which admittedly would be damn hard with only 2 weeks to find somewhere to live ! ( Is it your landlord doing the panicking becasue in 51.6 its not you who needs to panic)

I've been in that situation, its so worrying...but here the line says calm down, stay rational hmmm. If you really can't find anywhere do you think an appeal to the landlord for more time might be an idea ?

One time we tried so hard to find somewhere and couldn't and the landlord gave us some extra time.

Alternatively i feel the 54.5 may refer to you staying with a friend or a relative for a while where you won't feel entirely comfortable in someone elses place but its good, it works well.

54.5 does suggest to me you may move in with someone else for a while...and possibly them being established, the flatmate thats already there, or even landlord living on premises can make you feel in second place...but it actually works quite well . Those are just guesses about the 54.5 BTW . However you did ask if you would find a place to be happy and i think the answers portends that you will but possibly with less autonomy than you have now...but you find it acceptable and it brings you good fortune.

Whatever, theres good fortune in accepting the secondary role in 54.5

As an after thought one useful way of seeing the relating hexagram with one line moving is to say for example that 54's 'joy', its 58 ness, is found in line 5. Well you can do that with any line.

So one could say 51's 'biting through', its 21ness, is in line 51. 6

am not sure that makes sense but .....

Six at the top means:
Shock brings ruin and terrified gazing around.
Going ahead brings misfortune.
If it has not yet touched one's own body
But has reached one's neighbor first,
There is no blame.
One's comrades have something to talk about.

The shock doesn't reach you. It reaches your neighbor, which suggests that a place will open for you because of misfortune to someone else. But don't feel guilty if this happens because life must go on. Talk to people you know: "One's comrades have something to talk about." They may know of a sudden opening appropriate for you. 51.6 changes to 21, which concerns legal matters like a new lease.

I'd just add that Gui Mei literally means "the maiden returns home" (which is an expression used to indicate wedding, due to the ritual procedure), and the Xugua says that hex 54 means finding the place where you belong. So I think you'll find a place where you really feel yourself at home. 58 here probably refers to the joy of being where one belongs, because line 5 is the ruling line, the one that actually fulfills the dao of hex 54.

I agree with Trojan in toto (or almost). IMO it's a pity so many newbies still ask predictive questions instead of more interesting ones. "Will I...?" "It depends on what you do" (as Hilary says).

"How will I find my next place?" 51.6>21... Yes, 51's 21ness is in its 6th line, where some of the characteristics that Trojan read in hex 54 can also be traced. First, the fact of being at the mercy of a greatest power, however not overwhelmed by it; second, the fact that a union seems desirable, even if we must accept a secondary role. (Also, about hex 21: the Xugua says it means union, as the second ideogram of its title literaly means uniting the jaws tightly). In Pierre Faure's commentary to this line, the "rumors" are said to "evoke perhaps the annoyance felt by the Zhou when they had to accept the position of vassals of the Shang (...) after their general Zhen had greatly contributed to Wu Ding's campaigns (against the Gui) -- see line 64.4".
I can imagine that the line's "21ness" consists (in your context) in being careful about the contracts, or the conditions you have to accept: in the Great Images, Li+Zhen always mean legal matters, both here and in hex 55 (which is incidentally the one following "your" 54 in the Sequence). They must be clearly defined at the beginning (55) and strongly enforced when it's necessary (21). Here you must have strength inside and use it to bring uneven things to light to avoid injustices and traps. You might have to be very resolute, so be careful. In fact I'm even wondering if your landlord might be applying something too literally, or you have more rights to stay there than you know... maybe it ain't necessary to hurry so much... Everything in your readings would make a lot of sense if so.

It's been a week since posting and my apartment search continues.

Trojan, you were right, my current landlord is fine with me extending a week or two which lessens the pressure, and I do have a friend I can stay with if necessary. Your impression that the Yi suggested I might live with someone (not something I want to do but sometimes one can't be overly fussy) reminded me of a lovely friend I knew years ago who sometimes shares her house, especially as she travels half of the year. She is open to my renting for a couple of months.

I admit I do get a little confused about the final hexagrams, and about conflicting information on this forum. I have read at least once that for a situational question the second hex refers to the background and current context; and for a future based question the resulting hex is read as the outcome. Ultimately, I am taking vederedentro's and your advice as a reminder that the Yi, while sometimes startlingly literal in its responses, is not a linear oracle but can offer many layers of understanding, and to utilize it as such.

vederedentro, an option that I am secretly hoping for is to return to a building I was at several years ago - that would be a fantastic 'returning home', right on the water & safe. It's pricey these days, however maybe someone there wants to sublease. The building does not allow subleasing, so perhaps that would be the kind of contract to be careful with. Pocossin, I've put the word out that I'm looking - peoples' circumstances change all the time.

Thanks for the great advice. I'm feeling a bit pressured but not panicking yet. Fingers crossed I do end up somewhere where I'm happy & feel I belong.

New home

I wanted to follow up on how the apartment search was resolved.

Alternatively i feel the 54.5 may refer to you staying with a friend or a relative for a while where you won't feel entirely comfortable in someone elses place but its good, it works well.

After extending my original lease I stayed with different friends for about ten days. I was made very welcome & rather than straining friendships as I had feared, the time together seemed to bring us closer.

I found a flat about a couple of miles from the water. There were initial reservations about the size, quality and location (Hex 54) however had a good feeling about the manager and the building overall.

Here you must have strength inside and use it to bring uneven things to light to avoid injustices and traps. You might have to be very resolute, so be careful.

I had been specific regarding the lease contract (worked with a property development firm for several years so familiar with the usual tricks used against tenants). The area is also near a university neighborhood, where the landlords regularly provide shoddy units because students won't care or expect differently.

A place will open for you because of misfortune to someone else. But don't feel guilty if this happens because life must go on.

There were serious issues with the apartment on the day I was scheduled to move in. Perhaps this was the shock/misfortune hitting nearby, to the manager who seemed extremely embarrassed - he hadn't checked his contractors' work. Even if he was trying to pull a fast one, he didn't get away with it. In fact, he compensated the inconvenience by offering to do major upgrades to the unit using different contractors. So next month I should have new flooring throughout plus kitchen and bathroom upgrades!

This week have been unpacking boxes & am happy with the flat & especially the leafy neighborhood with shops and cafes within walking distance - very European which I miss after 11 years away.

Thanks as always for the warmth & clarity of your responses.
