Hi all,
this is my very first post to the forum :) .

I know the I Ging since over 20 years but did not use it that much. When i was in my twenties i once asked: what is the meaning or the sense of my life and got 61 (no lines changing). At that time i did not understand really what it ment. Still today i wonder. I am german and use a Wilhelm translation. Reading the Hex it seems it is all about 'judging'...
Can anybody help me to understand better?

Hi Lilly

judging?...

I tend to see 61 as someone who can influence others from the inner truth of him/herself

But, one can say that your answer goes to: search within you..there's where the truth of your life is.

Best wishes

The meaning here would be that your heart should be free from prejudices and always open to the truth. Being open minded and gentle in your approach to others, always try to see the good qualities in other people before you judge them.. Have confidence and faith in yourself especially in times of trouble, always be honest with yourself, never try to delude yourself. Open your mind to the world and its inhabitants, look at life with joy in your heart.

I don't know why everybody calls me stupid ...

that's been shown not to be true, oonk !

Good judgement helps to prevent the you filling the void with nonsense.

BTW I think that would be fairly unique, someone reading the actual Wilhelm translation, obviously not in Germany, but the rest of us go thru another layer of obscurity, reading the English translation of the German translation of the Chinese version of the original.

There is definitely such a thing as a hexagram of a life. Years ago, before I knew anything about using the I Ching as an oracle, I opened it at Hexagram 3 (Difficulty at the beginning) and this has definitely been my hexagram

Hexagram 61 is nothing about judgment in English translations, but about being in harmony with one's inner truth, creating the force of spiritual truth. So my feeling of this hexagram in response to your question is, "be yourself, and your truth will influence others profoundly"

No more than any other hexagram

The whole IChing is about judgment, divination is just a step toward it.

Says I, anyway.

As far as I can see there is no substantial difference between Wilhelm's original German text of hexagram 61 and the English text.
Innere Wahrheit. Schweine und Fische. Heil !
Fördernd ist es, das große Wasser zu durchqueren.
Fördernd ist Beharrlichkeit.

Inner Truth. Pigs and fishes.
Good fortune.
It furthers one to cross the great water.
Perseverance furthers.
I'm not sure how you got the impression that this is about judging.

Hi Lilly,
I translate the Chinese text for the name of hexagram 61 as "Inner Trust," which I take to mean "confidence" or "self-confidence."

My personal interpretation of this would be that it is everyone's fate that basic trust in life is undermined. We're mostly not aware of that, as this painful feeling is kept from our consciousness by the ego, in the unconscious. Restoring that basic trust would be the most meaningful thing we can do. That would also restore our ability to see the truth about ourselves, our "inner truth" if you will.

But for you it might mean something entirely different.

Hi all,

thank you very much for all your replies.

The picture is about judges talking to prevent death penalty. That is why i thought about 'judging'. There are some more lines referring to judging in the text too btw.

However, i have the strong feeling ewald is correct: it is about 'confidence'; respectively about 'self-confidence'. To me it now means: having trust in others and still beeing true/pure.

I wished i had an english translation so i could cite some lines. Is there a complete english online translation of the Wilhelm text out somewhere?

61 Chung Fu - Inner Truth
61.0 - The Judgement

Your success depends on the psychic connection and bond between you and the person(s) with whom you are involved. In other words, your external actions, although necessary, will not play the greater role. Influencing someone psychically occurs automatically and involuntarily when there is a rapport between yourself and the other person. The highest degree of psychic influence is achieved when the relationship is based on spiritual law and your intention towards the other person is his or her well-being. If the relationship is based on anything less your ability to psychically influence the person will be vulnerable to the challenges that occur in life.

Rapport is established and strengthened by your sincerity towards the person. Sincerity is generated by your willingness to sacrifice the lower part of your self (the animal nature), and material possessions to assist your friend. This requires deep meditation on truth and living it. You can also establish the rapport that will enable you to psychically influence even wrongdoers, which is generally difficult to do. This is based on the wisdom axiom that "knowing how to forgive is the hallmark of justice." This is based on the mastery of the knowledge of spiritual development. The "evil" committed by most people is due to the lack of input from the higher divisions of the spirit. Basing your corrective measures on this principle and aiming them at the upliftment, as opposed to punishment, will not only win over the wrongdoers, but will establish the psychic bond to influence them towards doing what is right.
People who succeed in developing their psychic abilities by abiding by the precepts taught in this hexagram can effect great changes in the world.

Recommended Reports
1. Balancing the Life-force
2. Divine Law Meditation

You might want to look into and meditate on this hexagram and whats its talking about somemore. This type of stuff might be a main theme or influence in your life. Peace.

Lilly, you are right about the judge but it was an analogy reflecting the yielding/softening/empathic nature of the hexagram - the judge goes to defend/fight for the release/escape-from the death penalty showing a soft heart to the hard exterior.

The bottom trigram represents self-reflection. The top trigram represents becoming influencial - thus "with/from self-reflection comes becoming influencial"

The judge 'reflects' on the death sentence and the prisoner and decides to 'bat' for him/her by influencing other judges/court officials etc to get release/suspension of death penalty.

The infrastructure, the skeletal form, of 61 is described by analogy to 29 - a focus on issues of containment/control.

The hexagram gets its nourishment from a source described by analogy to hexagram 22 - a focus on facade that leads attention away from looking 'inside' and only working off the surface.

From the outside 61 looks like 48 - a well, a source of nourishment (the hard exterior, soft, hollow, centre)

On the inside we find hexagram 21 - a focus on problem solving that includes establishment of rules etc (and so the intuitive association to a prisoner etc)

Emotionally, 61 represents "with/from love comes becoming influencial" - where love includes the more complex emotion of empathy and so emotional resonance.

Chris.

Hi there,

Some time ago there was a very long and lets say controversial thread about 'life' readings. At the time I tried it and received hex 1 lines 3,4 to 61. I really liked the reading so I decided it was right for me :) . Peace finally comes from inner truth, I wish you luck in finding your way to 61 from where ever you are now, what better place can there be. Maybe its where we all end up with any luck.

Hi there,

thanks all for taking the time helping me with this Hexa. The more i read your interpretations, the more i do understand. Still i meditate about it and this is fun too. I have the feeling this is really of great value to me. I should add that when i was 20something i got this hexagram and a while later i was suffering from anxiety and panic attacks and depressions. (Which of course had nothing to do with the hexa.) i was dealing a lot with stict inner judges - and do still today. But i do not suffer from panic attacks anymore.
