Interesting read last night. I have thought about this here and again for a number of years, but after a few things which have occurred in the past three or so months, I have given a change of profession more consideration. I love my profession as a Realtor, but I'm finding the return on investment is diminishing and feel that more prospective clients do not feel we bring anything to the transaction. This may be a cyclical occurrence and pass by next spring, but it may also be a result of the instant gratification, HGTV-addicted real estate client generation. It could be a permanent negative change of opinion towards Realtors in general. I've often thought it might be a good idea to work towards a J.D. to prepare myself for the next real estate downturn.

So, what happened to make me think this career change more thoroughly? This summer I performed with a group who did a benefit concert for the Tyler Clementi Foundation. It really touched my heart and opened my eyes to a larger group of people that I could help potentially. I had thought that if I entered the legal profession, I'd either be a professor (lots more schooling than I'm ready for right now) or specialize in the arena of family law. More specifically, focus on the needs of the LGBT community. I am starting to realize that the law doesn't fully understand those relationships and haven't really addressed their needs yet. It would be something I could feel passionate about as a profession as I know that could help change lives.

So, I asked Yi, "What would happen if I became an attorney?" and received Hexagram 8 unchanging. I read that to mean that I will be uniting people and working towards their best interests. However, once I read what Hiliary wrote about hexagram 8, I had to take a step back and ponder it more fully.

In light of her words, the future will be what I envision it to be. I can make it what I want. However, to do that, I have to be in it in the first place (a la attend law school). I think it's also giving me a smack on the back and telling me to get involved, to take that first step if that's what I want.

What's interesting is in her commentary, she mentions struggles and battles being well behind us. We all know I've had my fair share of that, so perhaps this is my time to put it behind me and step forward into the easy flow of my future as an attorney? What do you think?

Positive answer I think.

Union of people, common cause, shared interest. Friendly relations with others.
Peaceful civil leadership, I think all these things describe attourney profession and family law.

Yi can be asking you: do you really feel the calling to do this? If yes - then enroll into the law school.

I think this is without a doubt a positive hex.
however you need to be more decisive. If you really want it, just go for it, no time to ponder here and there. Because as the hex states: "The one who goes late will regret"

Great Insights!

Thanks, ashteroid and altair for your thoughts! I greatly appreciate your input. I agree with both of you, as I think Yi is throwing this back at me and asking if it's what I want to do. I'm still in the pondering and gathering information phase of things, so I can't exactly say it is yet. I think that I need to tour the local law school, be in that environment and take the LSAT. That will show me for sure that it's where I want to be over the next few years as I sacrifice much for the end result.

I know that the type of attorney I would be would allow me the opportunity to help people in their lives, which is what I love so much in my career as a Realtor. It definitely would have to be there in any profession I take part in. I need that to motivate me.

Follow Up Question

Since this last post, I have scheduled a campus visit to the local law school for next week. I figure I should take a step towards that future and see how I feel in that environment. As this has me excited, I'm also nervous. I asked Yi, "How will I afford to attend law school?" and received hexagram 48.2.3.5 > 2.

I think I need to be receptive to various sources. I think Yi is saying that I will have moved past line 1 of 48 (preparing the well) to the fact there is a little money. This isn't a top tier law school. Perhaps that's the small fish in line 2? The well is dug out in line 3 and by line 5, it will be filled with water (money?). I take that to mean I need to prepare myself financially and be open to any opportunities out there for scholarships, grants, loans. The money will come. How do you read this? Thanks for your take on this!

Mostly I agree with your interpretation.

48.2 → 39 (Obstacles), Daniels:
Resources are wasted and insufficient.

48.3 → 29 (Danger), Legge:
Shows a well, which has been cleared out, but is not used.
Our hearts are sorry for this, for the water might be drawn out and used.
If the king were (only) intelligent, both he and we might receive the benefit of it.

48.5 → 46 (Ascending), Legge:
Shows a clear, limpid well, (the waters from) whose cold spring are (freely) drunk.

Line 2 says concentrate on your goal, cutting all unnecessary expenses, 'clearing the well', repairing the bucket.
Then the water level will rise as in line 3.

Also there could be some sources that you haven't considered yet. (Loan from friends/family? or bank).
Grants, scholarships maybe. It can say that on your 2nd year of studying the situation will improve.
And an overall reassurance in line 5.
