Hi all,

I'm standing between a choice - Should I get a loan and buy an apartment (smaller, worse neighborhood) or should I rent one (slightly bigger, and possibly in a better localisation). Plus i have 2 cats so it's somewhat easier to buy than rent I guess but that may depend on the landlord. The benefit of renting a place is that I will have a safety net in the form of money (approx 1 year of salary) I've collected so far.

This is the answer Yi gave me (I've copied the fragments that caught my eye from the aviable translations) :

Look for a place to buy - 60.1.2>8

line 1 : Although you would like to take certain measures in the current pursuit of your aims, when you see obstacles ahead you must stop. Such Limitations should be recognized and accepted. Stay within the limits and collect your strength quietly.

line 2: Line one depicts one restricting himself when it is proper to do so -- line two symbolizes the opposite case: He restricts himself when the times call for action. A fearful, over-cautious or perhaps merely ignorant attitude prevents him from taking the necessary initiative. Sometimes one receives both lines: a seeming contradiction, unless seen as a subtle differentiation of choice. I.e., The first line negates the immediate question, but the second warns us that action of a different character is necessary.

Look for a place to rent 58.1.4>29

line 1 looks quite positive - "The image here suggests a cheerful self-sufficiency in the matter at hand; in some sense the situation is obvious and under control. "Inward harmony" might relate to unconscious dynamics unavailable to conscious awareness."
but the Fan Yao mentions 3 years of gloom: "Fan Yao 47.1: rump belabored, in valley of gloom 3 years"

line 4 : "You are suffering from indecision based upon a choice between inferior and superior pleasures. If you recognize this and then choose the higher and more constructive form of pleasure, you will find true happiness. Above all, make your decision soon."

Although the lines are positive the hexagram transforms to Hexagram 29, the abysmal/ Danger..

Please share your your thoughts
Thank you!

Hi eyedrian,

Look for a place to buy - 60.1.2 > 8
The timing seems to be somewhat off for looking to buy, currently. Ok not to go out of the door, then danger of missing the right moment. Resulting 8 shows you'll have to stay put, OR, that you should look to buy somewhere very near where you live (so don't go to a worse neighbourhood).

Look for a place to rent 58.1.4 > 29
Going from quietly happy, to stressing over choices, and resulting in a danger you've lived before. Between the two readings, the buying one sounds way better.

i personally don't see that much danger in 29, plus it's the relating hexagram, not the direct answer (maybe the context of current emotional distress), while the lines of 58 look rather encouraging. it will be stressful but worth it and the move should go well.

as to the buy, looks like there are limits to what you can get, possibly already a missed opportunity (line 2), i'd read relating 8 as keep on looking (or that you're seeking union, a place where you belong) maybe while you're renting. or possibly it's about even saving up some more (60 as in measuring could also be about that). to me line 1 says it's not wrong to keep the money for now instead of being in a hurry to spend it. on the other hand line 2 warns about being overly cautious.

btw, although the trigram water or abyss is associated with danger the judgment of 29 says that if you have sincerity in your heart whatever you do succeeds.

one more thought. being in a less comfortable place and looking to buy you might settle for something not up to your standards just for the sake of changing the situation, while if you rent something more comfortable you'd possibly look for something better to eventually buy as well.
