Yep, I asked a yes/no question... Just cast this after a frustrating week of (unpaid) overtime. We have a deadline coming up, my boss tends to overcomplicate my job and I'm going to be working 14 days straight at this point. Again weekends aren't being compensated for overtime, salaried workers usually don't get overtime pay in my industry. The stress is bleeding over into my personal relationships and sleep.

This job has more or less felt stressful and taxing since I joined 6 months ago so I've always been thinking about leaving or when to leave at least. Since I live with my parents right now, I don't need to pay rent and have support for expenses. The Yi has more or less confirmed that this isn't a 'forever job' via various forms of hex 56 but it has mentioned earlier when I asked this question to wait for the right time.

Should I quit my job? 59.4.6?47
Sounds almost like a yes? Line 4 sounds like rising over squabbles and line 6 implies that the situation will only get worse and more intense if I stayed. But hex 47 doesn't sound promising, perhaps it means "Dispersing oppression". But I imagine I'm coloring this reading with my own expectations right now. Line 4 sounds like the Yi is suggesting good fortune if I separate? Not entirely sure.

What would be the outcome if I quit my job now? 34.3.6>38
This one doesn't sound as favorable. It sounds like I might be overreacting from line 6 here, or at least that quitting would be an unnecessary display of force. I can't quite parse it.

Actually to add to this, I asked a semi-clarifying question in case I misinterpreted my first:

Should I stay or go from my job? 52uc
Fairly clear answer. The first reading (59.4.6) probably had to do with transcending petty office politics which are very much amplified due to stressful deadlines. Line 6 makes it sound like leaving would be the right thing to do though, still a bit confused.

It looks from the 34.3.6>38 that pushing ahead right now won't be the best thing to do. Too much force applied to the situation as in line 3 will only get you more in a pickle.. I like 34.6, just picture that ram with his head stuck in a hedge. He starts to get frantic and twists and turns and he gets even more knotted up and stuck than he was before. What does he do instead ? He pauses to admire the view and takes a breather and as he relaxes and takes his mind off the problem of being stuck and just wiggles to scratch his ear the tangles work their way free one by one.

The word 'hardship' is in this line, from Hilary

'The ram butts the hedge.
Unable to pull back, unable to follow through.
No direction brings harvest.
Hardship, and hence good fortune.'

It's saying going through hardship brings good fortune which means the hardship you experience is not a mistake, not a sign that everything is going wrong. I've found this to be an important and slightly foreign concept because when going through hardship one tends to think 'oh fcuk how did I get here I've fcuked up' but if hardship here brings good fortune then it isn't that something is not at all as it should be. If the goat sees being stuck as terrible and something that must be vigorously put right he sets himself back. So yes wait a while, give yourself the chance to look at things a bit differently (38)

Yes 52 uc is loud and clear, you don't need to go anywhere just stay where you are and stay focused in your own world.

The first reading

Should I quit my job? 59.4.6?47
Sounds almost like a yes? Line 4 sounds like rising over squabbles and line 5 implies that the situation will only get worse and more intense if I stayed. But hex 47 doesn't sound promising, perhaps it means "Dispersing oppression". But I imagine I'm coloring this reading with my own expectations right now. Line 4 sounds like the Yi is suggesting good fortune if I separate? Not entirely sure.

At first it could look like 'yes leave' but line 4 is asking you to gain a perspective on it. To still be there but set yourself apart a little more especially if you are having to spend time with people you don't like. BTW I recently had 59.4 for climbing Glastonbury Tor so if there are any hilly places around climb them or go there in your lunch break.

I think 47 confirms how draining it is but it doesn't seem quitting right now, from the other answers, is a great option at all. There is advice to remove yourself though in line 6. Can you physically distance yourself more from what aggravates you, even moving to another desk might help.

I think together these are very clear answers. Yes you need more space, you need to get a distance, but not by leaving, not yet.

Also change patterns for this line are yang 35, yin 5 so another indication for waiting.

Thanks Trojina, always appreciate your insights. Definitely a knee-jerk casting. This particular phase should end (hopefully) at the end of this week so it might be ok. I agree that challenging situations, and even ego-killing ones can be fruitful for one's own development, but it's hard to recognize that in the moment.

I think the excess focus on being stuck rather than dealing with the problems one-by-one can just amplify the issues. I know that eventually I'll leave anyway it's just a matter of timing, and having some kind of direction to go after.

Also change patterns for this line are yang 35, yin 5 so another indication for waiting.

I'm curious what 'change patterns' are. I've seen you mention that before, how do you get those yin/yang change hexagrams? And how do they reflect the situation?

If you are still in CC Hilary did a short video course on them.

I think of them as the almost the skeleton of the leaf. The placement and number of lines actually delineate other hexagrams. You find them by first making your change lines all yang and the rest yin. So here if we do that for the 59.4.6>47 if we make all change lines yang and the rest yin we have 35. Doing the same by making all the change lines yin and the rest yang we have 5. So these hexagrams will always be complementary/opposites. 35 and 5 are opposites, if you change every line of 35 you get 5 etc

Interpretation of this is pretty much open to debate. I think it was Karcher who 'discovered' these and possibly someone else at the same time. He calls them 'change operators'. I think both he and Hilary see these as like doors in and out of the reading. The yang pattern is what you come in with, the thing that bought you to the table to ask. The yin pattern is the door through and beyond so very often you will see the yin pattern reflecting some advice in the reading.

These are not essential to use but they really do help give perspective when there's many lines moving. It helps to see the skeleton under the reading.

An unchanging reading will always have the change patterns of 1 and 2.

The patterns for your 34.3.6 reading is 52 yang and 57 yin

Once you are aware of change patterns you can't not see them, at least I can't.

Oh and I like how 52 was there even in the 34.3.6 reading and then you cast 52 uc
