Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Hi everyone,

I am trying to decide what would be the best course for my life. As mentioned before I am in a foreign land (have been a foreigner for over 7 years and plan on staying that way).

But I am trying to decide what to do. Should I stay where I am and try to work it out here or go somewhere where it would be easier for my son and possibly for me? I really don't know what to do.

I asked the IC,

Should I stay where I am or go to the United Kingdom?
The answer was:

56.1 The Wanderer
Six at the beginning means:
If the wanderer busies himself with trivial things,
He draws down misfortune upon himself.

I still didn't understand so I asked: So what should I do? What would be best?

It answered

39 Unchanging

That's Obstruction but I found one line in the Judgement that is interesting, it says,

The Southwest furthers, the North East does not further.

Still, needing some kind of comforting answer to help me decide, to know I asked

Then where should I plan on staying/living now?

The answer was

Hex 59.6 Dispersion

Nine at the top means:

He dissolves his blood.

Departing, keeping at a distance, going out,

Is without blame.

So I thought, OK..I will ask what will happen IF I stay where I am now:

What will happen if I stay in (said country)?

Hex 36 Darkening of the Light
changing lines 1.3.4 leading to Hex 16 Enthusiasm

Nine at the beginning means:

Darkening of the light during flight.
He lowers his wings.
The superior man does not eat for three days
On his wanderings.
But he has somewhere to go.
The host has occasion to gossip about him.

Nine in the third place means:

Darkening of the light during the hunt in the south.
Their great leader is captured.
One must not expect perseverance too soon.
Six in the fourth place means:
He penetrates the left side of the belly.
One gets at the very heart of the darkening of the light,
And leaves gate and courtyard.

And just to get a complete picture (and I am posting it here so I don't forget it)
I asked,

"How would moving to Scotland affect my child?"
Hex 45 Holding Together, unchanging. (which is exactly what the IC told me he needs)

"How would me moving to Scotland affect my lover and I?"

Hex 11 Peace
Nine at the beginning means:
When ribbon grass is pulled up, the sod comes with it.
Each according to his kind.

Undertakings bring good fortune.

Nine in the second place means:
Bearing with the uncultured in gentleness,

Fording the river with resolution,
Not neglecting what is distant,
Not regarding one's companions:
Thus one may manage to walk in the middle.

OK, so for the whole situation..what are you guys seeing here? How do you interpret it?

For the whole situation, I see a ton of questions and no clarity on your part.

Of all the questions you asked, which one's your favorite?

Hi Dobro,

which is my favourite question? I suppose it is: "where should I go?"

Hi Laylab,

A quick note for future reference - notice what had changed when you said, "Now I am at least getting answers I can grasp." You'd started asking better questions.

'Should I do this or that?' is a guaranteed recipe for total confusion when you try to work out what the answer applies to. Is it telling you what to do? Or is it describing the likely outcome of one of the options? If so, which one? All these unanswerable questions to grapple with before you can even start to try to understand what the reading's saying...

There's a less obvious problem with 'Should I...?' questions - they're sometimes a cover for a lack of personal clarity about what results you actually want. What outcome would make a choice something you should do? Only you can decide that - the oracle certainly can't tell you. It's noticeable that your 'should' questions get a lot of single hexagram answers. That is, answers that are missing the 'relating hexagram', the element that describes how you relate to the issue - which sometimes indicates that you've yet to choose your stance.

When you start asking 'What if...?' and 'How would this option affect these things in particular?' you get a couple of answers you can apply directly. Relief!

I think that when you asked 'Where should I go?', Yi responded by asking you a question. Hexagram 8: finding your group, seeking union. Where do you feel you naturally belong? (And yes, this does call into question your choice of 'staying a foreigner'...) Where does your question come from? Get clear about your own chosen direction, and things will start to fall into place. (And you can use the Yi, then, to see which of your options is the best fit with what you want.)

Hex 45 Gathering Together, unchanging

If I'm reading this right, the Yi's saying something like: "You're asking where you should go, but what you really need to do is get yourself together psychologically, socially and lifestyle-wise."

In other words, your quest right now is one of uniting yourself to a place to be, and once you sort out your inner values, the external, geographical, residential address issue will take care of itself. What's very interesting to me is how when you (correctly) consulted once more after receiving 8 initially, the Yi talked about 45: Gathering Together, which suggests to me that where you belong is somehow a place where you can be part of a larger group which is working together on some project of importance. It sounds like you need to unite yourself and your life around some sort of shared aim. What does that suggest to you? What comes to mind?

Hi Dobro and Hilary,

thank you both for the insight.

To answer Dobro's question, what it says to me is that the things I am longing for are both:

1. to go back to school

and

2. then to have my son come back to live with me

I wanted to start my own business but have been advised against it due to the system in the country I am living in. Right now I am trying to decide:

Do I go back to working in a career I basically hate? Take a huge risk and start a business or go back to school so that I can change careers with less risk and more support?
