Before the game I did a cast. I thought about changing the question I had in my head to a question that was not at yes/no-question, - but in this case my one and only true question was - Will Denmark make it to the final?
So this was the words I repeated to myself while doing the cast.

My interpretation was that it would be a game with a lot of enthusiasm/energy which had to be balanced with caution, we shouldn't fly to high, especially not with line 3, which Karcher translates as: You can nowhere exceed defending yourself against this.
All the translations I look present this line in negative ways, and I my conclusion was that no, Denmark would not make it.

Hillary has an interesting translation:
‘Not going past, he defends himself.
Someone following may strike him down.
Pitfall.’

In a football situation that could mean to be too focused on the defense.

Hatcher has:
One is never beyond defending oneself
From behind someone might attack here
Unlucky

And this seems to point in the opposite direction.

Both agree that somebody following/behind might strike/attack, which seems to be what happened at the crucial point, where the goalkeeper blocked the penalty kick but lost the ball, so that 'someone following' could kick one more time and score the winning goal. Reformulated: "The ball didn't go past (the goalkeeper), he defended the goal, but someone following (it was actually the same player) kicked the ball again and this time he did score and we lost the game (pitfall, unlucky).

I am a novice regarding I Ching and a complete novice regarding football, so maybe someone who watched the game have some other opinion about the match and about the cast.

Hi Introvist
It might be that line 3 is saying more about Raheem Sterling's hotly disputed penalty which ultimately led to Denmark's demise,

Hillary has an interesting translation:
‘Not going past, he defends himself.
Someone following may strike him down.
Pitfall.’

Sterling wasn't going anywhere with his dribble to the by line. He wasn't going to get past either of the defenders. So defending his position, i.e to make the most of it, when he feels the brushed contact of the second defender who was following him he acts as if he was struck down. Penalty !!!!!
Up steps Harry Kane and .........wait for it, oh no, wait for it, oh yes ................. Goal !!!!!!! 2-1. Pitfall for Denmark

Hex 62 meaning 'move through being excessively small'
Hex 16 meaning ' joyous response'
So in a context of a joyous response to your question Denmark's only move will be towards being excessively small i.e. ending the game with only10 players on the pitch. Hexagram 62 in the Judgement says that " it does not allow great works" and that " going higher is not fitting, coming down is fitting".

Will Denmark make it to the final?
Will Denmark make it to the final?
Will Denmark make it to the final?

Having read the Judgement I think not.

In truth, they didn't really have a chance as the deeper forces acting behind Denmark in the game (nuclear - Hex 28) gives them the challenge to face which is 'to withdraw from the time without sadness'. So near, yet so far, and certainly no cigar. However they do have a performance in the tournament where they were respectful in all they approached and mourned honourably (exceedingly well) in their loss (Hex 62 image) and will forever be able to look back, from some place far in the the future, on all of Euro 2021 with proud hearts. Their joyous response to the game may have to wait until some future time.

....of course it may mean nothing like this at all.

Thank you for this alternative way to read the line. And for the recognition you show for the Danes ;-)

I am English, by the way, hence my interpretation of the Yi's interpretation to your question as being a joyous response to Denmark losing.

Chances of Italy winning the final? 63.1 > 39
It will be hard for them to break England's strong defence. Things will be difficult and blocked.

Chances of England winning the final? 31.3 > 45
They'll keep attacking, pursuing to score. 45 maybe shows team cohesion, or perhaps multiple goals?

Will Italy win the final? 35.1.6 > 51
Something will happen quickly, completely out of the blue, which will give a shock result.

Will England win the final? 56.1 > 30
They'll do something petty during the game, perhaps get penalised for it.

I purposefully phrased the first two questions as 'chances'.
So England will have many more chances to score than Italy in this game.
But due to a petty move by England, there will be a penalty and Italy will overturn things and win?

(note: I'm neither English nor Italian)

So your interpretation could be something like they will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. I don't like the sound of that!!
My take (trying to stay as neutral as I can) is:
Hex 56 - meaning 'connecting the scattered few'
Hex 30 - meaning ' what is above'
Hex 56 Image - 'A noble one is clear and thoughtful in administering punishments, and does not draw out legal proceedings.’
56.1 - 'The traveller – fragmented and bitty, Chops up his place and courts disaster.’

Here I'd say that there is a sense that they may be impacted by the occassion and the expectant weight of the nation on them - never having won a final since 1966. They play nervously to begin with, perhaps employing the wrong tactics. Afraid of losing, they adopt careful defense and playing well within their capabilities (image), rather than playing for the win........or maybe vice versa.

At 56.1 disaster is only 'courted'. There is a chance of connecting things to bring about a new fate (meaning). This is being motioned into place but whether they can cast out their faults (30.1), (change tactics or make inspired substitutions) in the game soon enough to change there fate is a moot point. The game is played in a context of Hex 30 where the light shines brightly through following what is great in you.

Is that going to be enough? Who knows it's all in the lap of the Gods.

Chances of England winning the final? 31.3 > 45
They'll keep attacking, pursuing to score. 45 maybe shows team cohesion, or perhaps multiple goals?
Hex 31 Influence - meaning 'urging them on'
Hex 45 Gathering - meaning ' assembling them'
Hex 31 Oracle - 'Uniting in spirit. Make an offering and you will succeed' and ' Good Fortune'.
Hex 31 Image - A noble one accepts people with emptiness.’

31.3 - ‘Influence in your thighs, Holding on to your following. Going on, shame.’

England's chances are very much in their own hands. Whatever happens they will play with passion and as a united team. All for one and one for all mentality. Perhaps this is too much at the start and affects their game and so here the change of tactics I see more as calming down their play(image). If they are not able to change their approach to how they play then going on like this brings shame - they throw the game away: snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

The key to what happens is being driven through the nuclear 44 - Coupling
'The prince sends out mandates and commands to the four corners of the earth.’
Gareth Southgate, the England manager, holds that key - his decisions from the sidelines, both in tactics and substitutions, and how he motivates or calms the players will make or break England's chances of winning the final. He is the glue that will bring the cohesion to their performance in the final.

Maybe the deep flowing currents behind this game are directing him to embrace some new approach, only for a short time though, in order to bring about the change in outcome that England have been experiencing in major tournamants for over 50 years.

....or it may be nothing like this at all.

You know, thinking again about this cast... the traveller / foreigner might be Italy here, since the game is taking place in England. And the shock cast might mean that Italy will get a nasty shock. I was hoping for clearer casts - as it is I'm really uncertain as to who the casts mean will win. Perhaps the I Ching doesn't know either and will be watching the game with us.

;-)

I did a my casts before the I Ching had watched the game, and for Italy I got 14.2 >30 Great possession's Clarity. Line 2: ‘A great chariot to carry loads. With a direction to go, no mistake.’
So Italy sounded like a winner.

For England I got 52.0 - Stilling
I had/have no idea what that means (go on a meditation retreat to get some relief?). But since it was either a non-answer or an answer that was hard to connect to winning, I expected Italy to win.

But I had some concerns about doing these casts. I friend of mine who is betting on football games asked me what I Ching did predict. I didn't want to do the cast before it was too late for him to bet. I think it would be morally wrong to make use of I Ching this way. Still it is to some degree what one is doing by asking 'Should I buy this house' or similar questions.

Priceless 😂😂

Great point that asking before investing money as in a house is a form of betting, had never seen it that way but I see it now that you mentioned it.

The 52 only makes sense here in relation to 14.2. In 14.2, there is acquisition and forward movement. In 52 things do not go anywhere, they remain motionless where they are.

Oh yes, I see what you mean. If you exaggerate the very reactive playing style of England you get 52.
