Son's job capacity 17 unchanging

My son seems to be struggling with his capacity to do his job properly, as part of the his tasks he's never done before, and part of it is a bit age related, as in the mentality of his age group as opposed to a more mature experienced person in the role. It's a HR kind of role.
Hard to explain anyway I asked (with his permission)
What does he need to know about his capacity to do his job properly

Hexagram 17 unchanging - this looks to me like he's got a whole lot more to learn to do his job properly and he should be listening and being a little bit more supportive of employees who seek his assistance.

What does he need to know about being out of his depth with a present task he needs to perform
Hexagram 27.2>41
Others looking to him for support aren't able to get it because he doesn't know what to do.

Hi Becalm

Perhaps this commentary from an old website I love helps in regard to your query.
The website is called 'The Modern Poets I Ching' by Thom Williams.

What does my son need to know about his capacity to do his job properly?
Hexagram 17
Two great principles are working in your favor: Determination to do right and humility. You ask no more from anyone than you are willing to do yourself. This makes you a soft-spoken leader who has the loyalty of people's emotions. You are humble in that you accuse and blame no one else. You support the growth in those around you by listening to them without judgment and by being quiet about some of your own knowledge. Often it is less important to be right than to treat someone with respect.

This seems to connect to your own commentary:

i would read it similarly but also, connecting your question to the text of the image, i wonder if he's sleeping well? i know from experience how much lack of sleep can impact one's performance at work, it's definitely much easier to keep the "following" mindset when well rested...

and if 17 is about following a certain path (by being open and receptive to other's help or advice for example) then 27.2 seem to be about "wrong" sources of nourishment that cause one to deviate from it. if there are any, i'd read 27.2 > 41 maybe as advice to reduce them? but in your case i feel Wilhelm's commentary stands out most:

"If, owing to weakness of spirit, a man cannot support himself, a feeling of uneasiness comes over him; this is because in shirking the proper way of obtaining a living, he accepts support as a favor from those in higher place. This is unworthy, for he is deviating from his true nature."

which in the context of the situation could be either about an internal struggle regarding some independence or he's a natural leader and so following doesn't come easy to him?

Thanks legume He’s definitely not
Sleeping well so that’s an interesting point and probably a bit of both re the internal struggle/independent and being a natural leader.
