I've been thinking about starting a paid subscription newsletter in my niche. This is an area that I've worked in for over 20 years, so I'm familiar with the space and know the subject well.

I asked the Yi: "What will be the outer [material, tangible] result of publishing this newsletter?"
The answer was 61.1.5 to 4.

Wilhelm/Baynes:

61. Inner Truth
Pigs and fishes. Good fortune. It furthers one to cross the great water. Perseverance furthers.
Wind over lake: the image of Inner Truth. Thus the superior man discusses criminal cases in order to delay executions.
Line 1: Being prepared brings good fortune. If there are secret designs, it is disquieting.
Line 5: He possesses truth, which links together. No blame.
4. Youthful Folly
Youthful Folly has success. It is not I who seek the young fool; the young fool seeks me. At the first oracle I inform him. If he asks two or three times, it is importunity. If he importunes, I give him no information. Perseverance furthers.
A spring wells up at the foot of the mountain: the image of Youthful Folly. Thus the superior man fosters his character by thoroughness in all that he does.

My reaction:
61.1 and 4 speak to the need for preparation and thoroughness in my work, which makes sense; if subscribers pay for the newsletter, it needs to be worthwhile. 61.5 seems encouraging in gaining public interest in my work. However, Youthful Folly doesn't seem very encouraging for outer success, suggesting that despite being senior in this field, I still have much to learn and the project is yet immature. Any thoughts you may have are welcome.

I have this same ambition.(y)
So self- interest might bias my answer.

I wonder if Yi comments on others as well when answering? Youthful Folly could also represent your readers, could it not?

I may be wrong in thinking that the relating hexagram represents the background condition from which the primary hexagram is operating. So I read this as your audience is seeking you. If you don't have a hidden agenda (61.1), if what you want to write about is connected to what they seek (61.5), by connecting truly related ideas without relying on artful contrivance and conflating unrelated things, then you are ready to write.

Research is always changing the map. It's not wrong to put yourself out there just because there's more to learn.

I'm looking forward to people who know more to weigh in...

Thanks, ZeroPoint. That is certainly a more positive spin than mine, and I appreciate your perspective. Maybe this is the Yi's way of saying "it's a learning opportunity." I hope your own newsletter is successful! :)

It occurs to me that enabling people to importune for advice might mean a newsletter may have to respond or allow readers to respond. I almost see a blog, or a Letters column. I'm sure there are many ways to do it.

Warm wishes, whatever you do! Let us know what happens.

I generally get a good feeling about this reading. Looking first at the trigram images ....

The lower trigram of 61 is Lake, with the first line moving - resulting in trigram Water. I take this to mean that you have a generally positive, joyful attitude towards this project, but perhaps there's a bit of unease or apprehension about starting out (moving first line). I think the advice here is to remind yourself to 'go with the flow' (lower trigram Water), and that you may have to embrace (or deal with) some worry or fear about this project, especially at the beginning.

The upper trigram is Wind, with the middle line moving to Mountain: I get a sense that you will see material or tangible gains from this project, but that will take place in small steps (ways, increments) and over time. I think the trigram Mountain is suggesting that you'll have to be patient with this effort, because it may not move along as quickly as you'd like.

As to the Yi's words: with the Judgement, you have 'pigs and fishes', good fortune and a reminder that 'perseverance furthers'. Pigs and fishes remind of material things (animals) that can serve and feed us, but at least with pigs, we have to care for them in order to reap their the benefits.

Line 61.1 is about the 'how' of this endeavor -- it will help to be prepared -- for example, I imagine this could be having some savings lined up for printing and publishing, or that you have some idea of what resources you'll need to get going ....

I get a sense with Line 61.5 that this is about being honest with yourself and others about your project and why you want to do it. To have some sort of hidden agenda (for example, a secret desire to become famous?) is not a good thing here.

While I think this is all good stuff, a lot of my response feels process-oriented, and I'm having a bit of a problem actually addressing your question: specifically, what sort of material or tangible things will result from publishing the newsletter?

Not meaning to be squirrelly about this, but maybe part of the response - and this idea of being prepared - would be to ask yourself, what do you want from this project? What are your goals? What are you're expectations? Do you want your newsletter to be well-thought-of and read by many? (which is very tangible). Or are you hoping for monetary (material) gain? Or ... ?

I sense that all this is possible, but it might require some forethought, planning and intention (or intentionality) - and patience - on your part.

I hope that's of some use.
Best, D

dfreed, thank you for your thoughts. It may be that the Yi is giving a process-oriented response, which is what is needed now, more than "what can I get out of this?"
