Hi Michael and welcome!

If the PDF is hosted somewhere just post the link. Or you could attach it to a msg and send it to me (check my profile for address and link to email) and will upload to my site (as Brad did with yr first file). Very interested in reading that new chapter.

Best,

I hope it's ok to quote from your paper.

This is such an enormous distinction:

This portrayal of beauty where it is commonly believed that none exists is
generally called "poetic embellishment." It is nothing of the sort. There
is, in fact, no need for embellishment, since in all things there lies beneath
the surface an intrinsic beauty which is a reality, and which has always
existed in all its brilliance merely waiting to be discovered. - Natsume Soseki

So beauty is everywhere. Why then cannot most people see it? It is because of
egotism -- worries and striving

Hi - Rodaki,

Thanks for looking at the hexagram 22 chapter!

Yes, there is a companion chapter, which explores the broader topic of "The I Ching Philosophy of Enlightenment," and puts 22:6 in perspective with 52:6, 4:6, 18:6, 41:6 and the other symbols in this particular series. I'd be happy to post this article here, too. I think it could add to the discussion. This series is a good example of what I call "aesthetic order" in the I Ching.

I'm new to this group, and not used to posting in a discussion site like this. Bradford has been nice enough to help me post the first article. Thanks, Bradford!

I tried to attach a .pdf version of the second paper to this post, but it wouldn't let me upload. I'll work on this and see how to post this properly...

hi Michael and welcome from me too

It would be really great if you are willing to post more texts . . In my post I was referring to your study on the line to line correspondences between hex. 22 and hex. 56 (page 35, footnote 80) but anything you feel is relevant would be most welcome!

Hi Michael and welcome.

I loved the beauty and simplicity of your paper as well as the very interesting information, thoughts, and points of view. Filled some gaps, helped me to clear up some foggy thoughts I had in my mind, and gave some things to think more about.

It would be nice , if we could hear more from you.

Dear Maria,

Thank you for those nice words. My wife and I have done I Ching work together for so long, and now we have the chance to reach out to others that have similar interests. I'm enjoying this. I'll post that companion article on "An I Ching Philosophy of Enlightenment," and that should also give us a little bit to discuss...

Hi Michael,

I got the file and is now posted for download at:

I Ching Philosophy of Elightenment

Just as Brad said above, I'd be happy to help hosting the files. And redundancy is good, so perhaps we can both host the files. Don't hesitate to ask.

Nice work, by the way!

Hex 22 from its structure and numbering

Hi All,

Hex 22 Grace, enlightenment, High Lights--names have many connotations, perhaps it would help to also consider basics: Yang lines in the first, third and sixth places only--therefore, the focus is upon the transition from prior to this (line 1) and this to the next (line 6) as this is accomplished through the expression of passion isolated (line 3 and line places 2,4,5 Yin background).
Personal passion is small relative a mountain, but it is a basis for moving things along in their process through meditation.

In terms of trigrams, hex 22 is fire under mountain or the highlights of a campfire upon the large mountain at night. Again, the campfire is small but its flickering light illuminates the mountain some and the mountain nearby highlights the campfire and its flickering light.

By its numbering: hex 22 or 20+2 is two complete sets of ten and then the negative dyad of next set whose monad is hex 21 of thunder and lightning or cause-and-effect or karma or justice. As the negative dyad, hex 22 is the background of causation or karma, the action of meditation or passion refined to bring about process.

The positive dyad is hex 23 which is splitting apart or harvest where the sole focus or Yang line place is the 6th, the transition to the next. Agriculture is the process of human intervention with plant life to split apart or separate the useful food from the agricultural waste. Grain is separated from chaff and straw at the end of the growing season. This is the fullness of the process of transition to the next.

The meditation or highlights of the mountain campfire is the negative dyad or background of the process to the next or Enlightenment where the active elements are exposed in isolation. Personal passion (line 3) causing the transition from prior to next.

that was yesterday's find . . I thought it would go nicely here :) . .

Nothing is so improving to the temper as the study of the beauties either of poetry, eloquence, music or painting. They give a certain elegance of sentiment to which the rest of mankind are strangers. The emotions they excite are soft and tender. They draw off the mind from the hurry of business and interest; cherish reflection; dispose to tranquility and produce an agreeable melancholy.
