I make no attempt to hide my pleasure
that the road I am travelling
is leading where my heart would
if it were free to wander

the glow on the trees,
the grass greener than I have seen it before,
haze
without the sense of failing to surpass obscurity

my conscience,
if you like,
in accord with the overarching goal
to step in the footsteps of one
who could evince the motivation
for undertaking the journey

however,
I won’t see the master’s footprints
because temperature will drop below freezing

layers
of snow fall overnight

sounds of industry won’t reach the hills
or fracture listening with intent
to form mounds and depressions,
knolls and features with no incline
since shadows are deepening
and the aftermath of summer’s retreat
already has brought silence fine as light,
full as the sea
to settle around the ears

the mountain won’t be discerned behind the cloud
but it will make no difference
to a sojourn into the wilderness
because I’ll feel the same impulse
to capture the scene as did the ancients:

my favourite poet
who carried a satchel containing brush and ink,
simple fare like a Buddhist monk
and the present in a transparent shrine:

a drone
a fly
a shoot under
my foot,
the shadow
a rock
blue veins around the ankles

little man
of no name
snow will cover you
and you will light the fire
inside.

I’ll drink from the stream
you’d have passed,
pluck twigs that hint
of age old forests
about to reveal their essence to a stranger,
concentrate on every word that makes its way
into blue space
and,
as I leave it behind the peak,
follow the residue scribbled in my notebook:

the sign
on the inn bids welcome

here
you can enjoy
a meal, a bath
and a drop
of liquor

when the shutters close
nothing will disturb you
except, maybe, snowflakes
on the roof, a mouse
in the corner

an echo

darkness:

in the morning
I must get up
and continue.
