Thinking of my friend
whom I haven’t seen
for a year:

Don’t allow the wind in

it will blow out the candle

however
we need fresh air.

Avoid tearing open the sleeve containing the will

you may destroy the contents

but you need to know the conditions
of entitlement.

Refuse to prolong the sweet taste of dessert

we must preserve each tooth

but equally
we must express joy.

Divulge no secrets from the heart
that can be turned against you,
beat out the dust,
wipe soot clinging to the window

as the cream on the milk
has risen to the top,
although the moon can be seen clearly
as one sharp line
the hidden centre hides disembodied feelings
that could spread untoward fear
on dark rays, every second rife with the future
seen from a moment
that has passed
is thankful for its passing.

Caress a dove’s wing if you can catch it,
anoint your spine with scented oil
if you can reach it,
grasp the glowing coil if you can bear it

for the sky is grey, blue and wet,
the clouds white, black
and voluminous, the earth rich,
brown
and creeping with animal life

bedsprings creak,
the caretaker rises to check whether the pipes
have thawed

the old bell which hasn't rung for years
ready to receive its first shake.
