Hi. I have been wondering a lot lately about my relationship with crows. They hold such a presence that is often times associated with negative situations. When I see a crow, I get a humbling feeling and a sense of a bigger picture at play and I want to strengthen the picture.

I have read a couple of books that have minutely put in their two-sense in about crows. They say that the crow is a messanger of a warning that something meschevious or tricky in nature is (or is about to be) taking place.

I was thumbing through an old book of mine looking for mantras yesterday and noticed a section on crows that I had highlighted. In the book (Healing Mantras by Thomas Ashley-Farrand) he links crows with Saturn and more specifically 'Saturn's Return'. I am currently in my Saturn Return period, a time of lessons, and the crow is supposed to help warn you in this time and enlighten the lesson.

I want to get a better understanding of this and so I asked the Yi:
"Please give me an idea to ponder that will help me better understand the crow".
59.1.4 > 10

I was looking at what the ancient character for 59 was, and I read it described a man at the entrance of a cave looking around sharply with a stick. This struck me. I see the man as poking around to make sure things are safe before entering. If anyone understands this symbol more thoroughly please let me know. I often times think of the crow as keeping an eye out and poking around for anything that is dangerous. I am also seeing a correlation with the Image. Water and danger below. Wind above is the bird itself, and/or the element it travels on. I also associate wind with a message.

Hilary was saying something to the effect that 59 is about looking at the flow rather than the fixity of the situation. And she goes on to talk about the line "The ancients make offerings to the highest to establish the temples" in saying something like the temples are not make of solid structure and stone but rather they are of spirit. This also strikes me. The crow could be looked at as a moving temple (just like we all are :bows:) Maybe 59 in this reading is actually talking about me connecting and making a relationship with this temple??

Line 1 to me says to trust in their help.

Line 4 stumps me. Maybe because the range from translation to translation. If I just go off of Hilary's, it makes perfect sense. Barbarions aka danger hiding. The hilltop is a great place to place oneself, to see danger. A sort of defensive stance to take. Crows see from up high. But then I read Wilhem and a couple others I get very confused. Help!

Oh and I know I am using the word danger a bit much. It is me generalizing something tricky, mischevious, etc. It could just be a cop with a radar gun up ahead.

10 Treading ritual. Someone who embodies the spirit of a dead person in ritual. Sounds like halloween! And very fitting for the little black creatures we call crows. But this person whom embodies, that is a heavy and serious task that should be done correctly. The crow could be that 'person'. They might have quite the heavy burdon on their shoulders. Or maybe 10 is saying to me that I need to find someone who knows about crows in this way. Maybe I need to find a guide, because I shouldn't treat this as something light. Also, 10 is about staying out of trouble, precisely what I feel the crow is doing. It is warning me to stay out of the trouble.

Thoughts?

Add on: Does anyone have any good book recommendations on animal sybolism? I have no books on the subject, just ones of symbols in general. Maybe something animal shamanism books?

....and I might pick up some Edgar Allan ;)

For starters, see what you can find about Tricksters -- of which Ravens / Crows are significant representatives. Tricksters are wholly amoral beings, driven solely by their id, utterly without self-reflection or awareness for the consequence of their action. Despite (or because) of all that, Tricksters are a great help to humanity, bringing illumination to the world. In a notable Native American myth, Ravens were originally white and with a glorious song, but were burnt black and reduced to croaking as recompense for stealing the sun from the upper realms and bringing it to shine on earth.

Tricksters also serve to cut through one's self-generated illusions and bring you face to face with reality -- much like the I Ching. To my mind, Hex 44 specifically speaks to the Trickster experience.

Of 59 -- The overall message is about dissolving enmity and rigid expectations. Is there perhaps some underlying issue with these themes? We tend to see the present through the lens of past experience. I Ching tells us what the world is in this moment -- which can be quite a shock.

Line 1: More than mere trust -- a rescue from drowning. Do not waste this gift.

Line 4: I see this in the larger context of dispersing of factional thinking -- a great release from sclerotic divisions that have long-since outworn their logic.

Hex 10: I love those tigers! Reality bites, indeed! Step carefully in this new place -- despite your best intentions you may well step into some difficulty. Be authentic, sincere if/when you need to ask forgiveness, move ahead with great attention to every step.

I was reading Balkin's 59 and I am getting a different feel for my answer. He talks mainly about letting go of the ego and selfishness of the situation in 59. Could it be pointing at my desire to connect with the myth/archetypes of these birds? Maybe it is selfish of me to think they are reaching out to me.

Elias, On a side note, I am looking into the Tricksters and finding it pretty fascinating, the other animals associated with this pattern of behavior like the coyote. Thanks for the info.

Pleasant story Rinda, thanks!

This sort of goes with the story of Yi the Archer. At least that the bird was a symbol or bringer of the sun. I can't imaging living where it is dark 6 months and then light 6 months!

Take care,

Another prophecy still observed today concerns the presence of ravens at the Tower of London. It has been said that if the ravens ever leave the Tower, it will fall, and the crown of England shall fall with it. For this reason, ravens are kept at the Tower at all times, cared for by the RavenMaster. Few people actually believe the old prediction anymore, but they aren't taking any chances.
From above website. Has anyone observed this?

I don't know how you thought of that.

In Wen's arrangement of the trigrams as used in feng shui, occupies the north and is associated with the color black, as is the Black (xuan?) Tortoise.

Also,

Has a profound association with death. 'Treading' is the tracks the spirits leave. Lise has a note on it for 10.6.

Same goes for my apartment. It has dark blue and black in the north, a water glass, and a turtle stuffed animal :D It's all I have got for representation. It is supposed to be where you place things for your career. I have all of my Yi books placed there however. I do not know what I want to do for a career at this time.

- Looks like a bird flying

- Like a smaller version of 62

..the footprints and signs they leave. The birds "impersonate the deceased person".
On Lise's note of this line, I cannot help but notice that the actual footprints only have 3 toes like a bird. I am just reaching and need to fly low here.

These are all good correlations to this reading Pocossin. Thank you very much.
I read all of the links on the Crow Spirituality site that worked (The bottom ones didn't). There are a lot of myths and superstition about these creatures all over the world.
