I lent a family a large sum of money. They are are in financial trouble. The husband wants to give me a house, that has problems, in exchange for the promissary note they signed. They do not live in the house, it was one of their bad investments.

I asked, bluntly:

The house:
29, lines 1,2,4 to 17.

He wants to give me the house, what should I do?
53 lines 1, 6 to 63.

What should I know about the house?
62 line 5 to 31.

What about saying no?
24 lines 2 , 4 to 54.

Seems like a bleak picture. I am most confused about 53 to 63. In fact, I am confused and troubled about it all.

Maybe 29 is about water and the house, (someone told me it is a damp piece of land) but line 1 is a very bad sign. I dont understand how I am falling into the trap.

Hi hollis,

the house;
hex 29.1 suggests a major problem with it, it is a trap which will ensare you.
hex 29.2 suggests the house will prove to be a danger for you, probably financial loses and lots of headaches.

hex 17 says follow. Follow is to move and be guided by others.

He wants to give me the house, what should I do?
hex 53.1 says that you are in danger, do not be hasty, think this idea through very carefully.
hex 53.6 see the proposition from a different angle, the I Ching mentions feathers but what can you do with them, use them as ornaments. If you take the house will be stuck with it.
hex 63 says if you complete the deal and take the house, no problem at first ( the signing etc ), but later on you will get all kinds of problems with the house.

What should I know about the house?
hex 62.5 the house will bring you no joy, no profit. This whole deal is under a cloud (of suspicion). You will have to seek help if you accept it.
hex 31 says bring together what belongs together, but is this house something that you want to be shackled with?

What about saying no?
hex 24.2 says that you return to the owner and make the dicision to say no.
hex 24.4 says you are involved with others but you return home alone, ie without the house.
hex 54 says no enterprise will go well, it is a bad idea to get involved with this house. Say no.

Everything here suggests that the house is a bad one, you will most likely be stuck with it, lose money on it. You are in rather a bad position at the moment and your financial problems will not be over for sometime.

"I asked, bluntly:

The house:
29, lines 1,2,4 to 17."

29's about navigating risk. 2 and 4 aren't bad lines, but 1's problematic - two out of three ain't bad. Overall, 29.1.2.4>17 images moving through a risky situation, either in a way that follows something worthy or in a way that leads to following something worthy. Risky for sure, but not necessarily bad news. Please remember though that in 29 situations, it's all-important to maintain two things: movement and sincerity. It's like a public onstage performance - you gotta keep the show moving forward, and you have to give it your best shot.

"He wants to give me the house, what should I do?
53 lines 1, 6 to 63."

If he owes you money, then he's not giving you the house, which means your thinking about this, or the way you phrased the question, is less than clear. But let's say the Yi read your mind and understood that you meant 'he wants to give me the house in order to repay the debt; what should I do?' 53 is about gradual development. 56.1 is fine and 56.6 is great. Overall, 56.1.6>63 images a gradual development that ends up with everthing in its proper place. So, how does 'a gradual development' translate in terms of your situation? Well, don't rush into things. It's a risky situation, remember? So move slowly and carefully and step by step. Make sure everything's spelled out very clearly and that commitments on both sides are super crystal clear. 56 is also about long-term commitment; taking on a house is a big commitment. Get the place inspected and get someone to assess its value. Do some research on the neighborhood. And don't rush the deal.

"What should I know about the house?
62 line 5 to 31."

Well, I imagine you'd find the answer to that question from the house inspector. But the Yi's counselling attention to detail here, and it's talking about you skillfully finding out some secret about the place, or skillfully getting what you want in a situation that isn't transparent. Pay attention to detail (this harmonizes nicely with the 'take your time' approach given in the previous question/response) and keep your eyes open for what isn't immediately apparent or out in the open.

"What about saying no?
24 lines 2 , 4 to 54."

If you take this course, then you're returning to square one in a way which, on the one hand, avoids problems, invokes good fortune, and washes your hands of the mess the house represents, but which on the other hand leaves you in a weak situation - namely, you still don't have your money, and the ball's in his court.

So, in the end, it looks like none of the options you've outlined are clearly superior to the other. It looks like it's one of those situations where you pick the one that you like the look of (or dislike least), and make the best of it.

Good luck with it.

it's a loosing situation, isnt it. I thought of it this way too:

29 1
They are in a sinkhole/ The situation is a sinkhole
29 2
They can only offer me this/This is the only way to stay level
29 4
This is a sincere offer/A good intention, at least.

17
adapt to the danger ---

not good.

more later, thanks, guys, willowfox and dobro, for lending help. i am going to think carefully about this, and will write more soon.

53 to 63 suggests this has been a long time developing, and is what it is. a dead end situation.

i dont know what the bad talk is, in line 1, but i think line 6 means this is a ceremonial offer, if i take it, use it for tax write offs or something. cut your losses kind of thing.

thanks for the insights, willowfox and dobro.

Hollis,
In a word, no, unless you can immediately liquidate. If you say no, you don't have a solution (54), but you cannot be blamed (24.2.4.) This would not be a bad decision.

I agree with Dobro on 29<17, but point out you're getting drenched here. You're immersed in a quickly-moving river (combination of 29 and 17). This house will consume you unless you turn it around quickly and get it off your hands.

What should I do? 53.1.6. (63). Look at the question you asked. You asked what should I do. You must read the answer in its context. Anytime you have 1 and 6 together, you have a quick visiting of the issue. You begin and end. In 53, the context is a slow-moving journey toward home, and commitment. (Good context for taking on a house.) I think this is showing you the same picture as that quickly moving river in 29<17. The geese begin their journey in line 1, and release upwards in line 6, leaving the temporary safety of the lake and branches and returning home permanently. Line 6 is leaving the thing for good. So, what should you do? If you take it on, turn it around quickly, and get the house off your hands. Line 6 is telling you not to have it as an asset for any length of time.

What do I need to know about the house? 62.5. (31)
The man offering this sees it more as a solution for himself, (31, can be the wooing of a used-car salesman), and hopes you help him kill two birds with one stone, though he has little to offer.

Autumn, it does not look good. I asked one more question, "What if I say yes."

42.

Does this mean a sacrifice?

Something does not add up here, I really don't know what it is. I don't want the house, but in the situation I've been dealt, what is the altenative? I won't ask anymore questions for now. I'm just discouraged.

Thank you for your comments, it has meant a lot.

i take comfort that the 53 1 says I am not to blame.

62 5 seems to be just a shot in the dark by the husband to get out of his situation.

I will just sit this out for a few days, thanks all, for listening.

"what if I say yes?"
42

You will then own a house which will be on your hands. Your assets, and also responsibilities, increase, so take care if it cannot be made profitable.

One more word on 24. Return the ball to his court, and hold him responsible for the burden of liquidating it (54). Why hasn't he decided to sell the house himself to satisfy the debt?

Hi hollis,

hex 42 says increase, it says that you can say *yes* and take the house, absolutely no problem there. But the problem comes later because increase does not last, it breaks down, it decays. Therefore, if you take the house and sell it on quickly, then all should be well but if you get stuck with it then you are going to end up the loser in this deal. So, if this deal has faults , avoid them by saying no.
You know that the house does indeed have some problems attached to it, the house is sick. That in itself should tell you that you are not going to sell this house quickly. Keeping it will only worsen your problem about the return of your money, and while you are trying to sort out the problem, the house will sit there quite nicely rotting away.

What an excellent suggestion.

hi, and feedback.

Thank you, to all the diviners who turned an ear to my problem. The husband & his financial planner have decided against giving me the house. Which is good, because I would not have taken it. It turns out, if he keeps the house, he may take a home equity loan on it. Perhaps this was the meaning of 53 line 6!

I am just happy to be without this house.

Thank you for returning. It is invaluable to me to see the response correlated with the real outcome.

In retrospect, 53.1.6. (63), on "what to do", was not telling you "if you take the property, then turn the property around and sell it", (beginning and ending of 53, leading to conclusion,63)- well, I suppose it could have been saying that, too, but the real meaning was, "there is a process unfolding quickly" (beginning and ending of 53), related to this commitment (53), that will take the matter off the table (53 line 6) and also relating hexagram 63. Which is a very simliar meaning to "if you take this on, get it off your hands quickly", but in the real world, there was a different concrete application of the meaning.

In retrospect, 24>54 is represented very well here, for your answer to, "what if I say no?"
The issue will be returned to him, and he will be responsible for subordinating himself to acheive a solution (taking out a loan).

In financial matters, I have seen 54 appear in questions about renting and long-term loans for difficult problems like this. Interesting that it comes up about renting, though.

yes

It's good to hear you work through the lines, autumn, I learn so much that way.

In the future, I will try to find a better frame for the questions, "What should I do"? is really desperate, asking what to do, rather than an overview from which to understand. but then, I was desperate!

:)
