A friend of mine, an artist, has a website. He has little feedback on his artwork on this website. Now and then an 'I like' (like in facebook). He is wondering if he doens't wast his time with his website? He believes he spend to much time on his site to rearange the works and see if there is someone saying something interesting about his work.
He asked the Yijing if he better could drop the whole thing and do is art in silence.
Het got Great Possion 14.2.4.6 to Brightnes Hidden 36
He should appreciate some comments on this cast.
Thanks in advance

At a glance it sure looks as though Yi affirms his inclination. However, I've found 36 to include a meaning of quiet adaptation, rather than to drop out altogether of said activity. This may take a number of forms, such as placing his possession within a contextual field where his art isn't the center of attention, but where it compliments a more comprehensive presentation. For example, he may "hide" his work as an illustrator of some story or lesson or philosophy, etc. Just as words may be set to music.

The other thing to consider is that, there is pleasure in the work itself, which tends to become obscured when one relies on feedback from others for validation. The purification test of an artist is to be rejected, the other is to be accepted. It's a choice a capable artist makes. No right, no wrong, but if he/she wants more input and attention, well... allow me to quote Wilhelm 8: "If a man has recognized the necessity for union and doesn't feel strong enough to function as the center, it's his duty to become a member of some other organic fellowship." I think this is based on the artist's need for recognition, personally, and has nothing to do with art. Many artists find the middle road of creating art, which contributes to a greater production. 36 is a stealthy way to do anything, including evolving.

He may also just have a quiet but appreciative fan base. And sometimes this takes years to accumulate.
If his site and server don't have a statistics program running, he can always get an html snippet from Google Analytics to add to his web page to let him know what kind of traffic he's getting.

Thank you Bradford! I have your books and take the opportunity to express my appreciation for your translation, but most of all for your 'Rogue River' commentaries. I never read something so powerful and able to set a stream of associations like that in a Yijing interpretation!

He has a counter on his website and, indeed, he has a smal fan base. But I think what sooo writes, touches the core of the problem.
