I see all the time in forums and anywhere people talk about IChing they use a number system to describe what they got for an answer. I'm referring to things like 24.2.3> 9, I figured that the "24" in this instance means hexagram 24. However I don't know what the other numbers mean. Are they the changing lines? And then what is the greater than or less than symbol mean. If someone can just give me the run down on how this "number system" works I would be greatly appreciative.

A little back story about me:
I have only been working with I Ching for about 5-6 weeks, however I have worked with other divination modalities for several years. I have been working with tarot since I was 15-16 (I'm 30 now), and also runes for about 5-6 years.
I learned about the I Ching from a man running his stand at a metaphysics expo. I don't know if link dropping is ok here so.... anyways, I bought his book and a set of nice maple tiles (8) and started with his system. I received the Wilhelm/Baynes Book of Changes for Yule and have been reading it as much as possible (work alot). In spite of my Google searches I can't figure it out and I am probably really really newbie to ask but I want to know so I can share more and understand people's posts better.

Thank you again.

You are correct that the first number is the hexagram answer. The numbers after the "period" are the changing lines. The number after the "greater than" symbol is the hexagram that results when you change the lines. (It is not really a "greater than" symbol in this case; It is more like a "changes to" symbol.)

So when someone writes 24.2.3 > 11, the casting was hexagram 24 with "sixes"(changing yin lines) in the 2nd and 3rd line which would change hexagram 24 to hexagram 11.

To get hexagram 9 from hexagram 24 there would need to be 4 changing lines.

It would be 24.2.3.5.6 > 9.

Does this make sense?

Hi JokerKenshin, I'm a newbie too. This numbersystem in this Forum just to make it easier to search; a syntax if You like. First time I went in to this forum this way of marking was new to me too.
I'll recommend Trojina's link as well. Good luck.
(And welcome to this caotic world.... )
