Hello; I was wondering what the I Ching would look like if the hexagrams were arranged in pairs of reversed polarity, rather than physically inverted as are most of the pairs in the King Wen sequence. That way, one can compare the “negative” lines side-by-side. I call them the pang tong yao and have posted them at

russellcottrell.com/VirtualYarrowStalks/pangTong.htm

I apologize if this is not new; I wasn’t able to find such a list anywhere.

Russell,

Bravo. You did a very nice job. Nevertheless, this had compared in some Chinese books, but we do not worry about that because they did not did it thoroughly as you did. What you did is changing all 6 lines.

There are 3 ways to compare the difference between two Hexagrams. Every Hexagram should look like the following:

☰ => ☴
☱ => ☰ Original Sequence from King Wen (inverting)

☰ => ☷
☱ => ☶ All six lines changed

☰ => ☱
☱ => ☰ Exchanged places (rearranged or permutated).

I hope you will do this and give me a link, and you take the credit. :bows:

Thank you for the feedback. I have this heretical view that the King Wen sequence may not be the best way to pair the hexagrams, mostly because of the asymmetry arising from not every one having an inverted opposite. Each one has a reversed “negative.”

Russel,

Actually, the meaning of each pair of my example should be like the following. (The meaning of 63 other Hexagrams should be in the same way).

☰ . . . . . . . . . ☴
☱ . . . . . . . . . ☰
Ritual . . . . . . . No ritual
Deep respect .. No respect
Guideline . . . .. No Guideline
Laws, rules . . .. No Laws, No rules
Travel in group . Travel by oneself
Agree . . . . . . .. Disagree
Walk out . . . . .. Walk in

☰ . . . . . . . . . . ☷
☱ . . . . . . . . . . ☶
Moving forward . . Moving backward
Open . . . . . . . . . Sneaky
In the street . . . . At home
Superior . . . . . . . Humble
Walk out . . . . . .. Walk in
Take out . . . . . .. Put in
Straighten . . . . .. Bow

☰ . . . . . . . . . . . ☱
☱ . . . . . . . . . . . ☰
Continuing . . . . Ending
Discuss . . . . . .. dictate
Lengthy . . . . . . Short
gently . . . . . . .. Roughly
Theory . . . . . . . Reality
Democratic . . . . Dictatorship
Walk . . . . . . . .. Stand

I hope from these meanings, you can create something new. At the moment I do not have time to write out the other 63 Hexagrams in this form.

Thanks for the listing, would you mind explaining how you find comparing these useful?

Nothing specific, I was just thinking that it might be thought-stimulating. For example, in this list, 33 Tun / Retreat is the opposite of 19 Lin / Approach. 10 Lü / Treading is the opposite of 15 Ch’ien / Modesty; this might suggest that the concept of treading on the tail of a tiger is a fundamentally “immodest” act, an act of hubris. And line 1 of 6 Sung / Conflict and 36 Ming I / Darkening of the Light both mention gossip.

Of course, not all the pairs have obvious relationships. Maybe it just takes more thought.

I was looking at Hexagrams 61 and 62 next to each other.. So, when looking at the Judgements, I found that they are opposites in that 61 says It furthers one to cross the great water and 62 says It is well to remain low. Opposite.

Oh, by the way Russell. I am curious if your Avatar picture is the reverse from left to right. JUST WONDERING.

Ha! No. Maybe I should mirror it with a negative image.

yes, looking at such combinations makes sense too but I've yet to see clearly exactly how or why this works.

Most times I see them as each having at its core a particle of its 'opposite', for example 15 often makes me think of the balance in 'walking the line' and I've experienced 10 as trying to keep to one's integrity in the face of danger. But maybe that's a temperamental thing.

Can't say I've tried to examine all of them to speak with certainty either and I'm still not sure how useful this could be outside of theory, just wondering if anyone had come up with more on this . .
hmm, thanks for sharing!

Math of Opposite Trigrams and Hexagrams

Hi all. The whole of my math in 'The Sum of Things' gives a base of binary opposites as the placing of the trigrams as binary opposites is found to give the image of The Well and Bagua and how they fit together. The value 's of 1 to 8 Trigrams produce the 6 children also as opposites binary parings, as 2 to 7, 4 to 5 and 3 to 6 and this 1 to 8 sequence fits throughout all the math of The Changes.

The Wen sequence is of course placed as reversals but there are a set on opposites within this sequences as with Ch'ien and K'un = 1 and 2 (Heaven and Earth = the Original Trigrams of Light and Dark or the Father and Mother) and Wei Chi and Chi Chi = 63 and 64 - the other most noted is 11 and 12.

We now have all the math of the values found in the Book of Changes that are derived from the value's of heaven and Earth 1 to 10 which fit into the Ho Tu to give 5 Elements or directions, so in each pairing of Heaven and Earth the 1 to 8 sequence of trigrams are formed and then are squared or doubled (as the I Ching instructs) to form and 8 x 8 Square that is a perfect Magic Square in both binary and value of integers. When the Ho Tu is completed this then opens the Lo Shu which as an appendage gives the values of Time and Measure that fits the ancient value of 2160 x 4 = 8640 = hours in 360 days, and then 8640 + 4320 = 12960 x 2 = 25920 and then 51840 = The Great Year (2160 x 12).

This is a simple math of just adding each odd and even number of heaven and earth together - so this is an unlocking of how integers are fitted into the binary images and how the 6s and 7s are produced - as all Trigrams values = the addition of a number 3 times just as in 123 = 6 as all integers then = 6s, and in the hexagrams 123456 = 21 and all = 7s to infinity.

In Wilhelm's edition it can be noted that he fitted the Wen sequence into the trigrams pattern of 17658234 as to give a reflective value of 5184 and other comments he makes appear to tell us that he was also onto this underlying math. This math has now allow us to undo the math of contracted integers 1 to 8 that when each paring is added together = 9s and then 10s to give a + 60 yrs sequence in the 9 x 9 Magic squares of the Lo Shu.

It would take me along time to give all details here but the working's of the Ho Tu and Lo Shu, so they are simply given on Ken Taylor's site of Earlyheaven - Origins - Ho Tu and Lo Shu. My own site of I Ching Math and 3 videos on youtube 'Basic I Ching math parts 1,2 and 3, and Lee Burton's site and videos on the math that includes the undoing Rodin's Torus and the Atomic Lattice or Field Pattern.

I hope this answers a lot of questions you have began to raise here - but what the I Ching and The Well contains is deep, and all things must be balanced as not to hit the lining, and you will find that only through putting the integers into the binary images are all parts completely equal and balanced in value - giving the balanced structure of the universal vessel which contains the food of the Sacrifice (the structure of the physical body performs the sacrifice made) - in other words the physical body is offered up in order that the work of the Creative is completed through the devotion of the Receptive, as all things or parts of the created nature of the female or dark aspect follow The Law (the Law of the Jungle in which the Tiger is the Shan or King as the tiger's colours are of Heaven and Earth and his tail moves to and throw as does The Way)- so treading is the correct conduct of the Middle Way = a position in which the vessel is not broken apart upon the sides of the law's of opposite action, as all things must be kept in balance as ONE, and in which the man/the prince is not eaten by his unbalanced action on the field.

Reading given in The Oracle are a practice of conduct and a treatise on math of such a depth that they are only again now appearing as the base of modern physics. I can just give you the image of The Well with its central 9 and the contracted values of 1 to 8 are also 8 to 1 = 12345678(C9)12345678 = all 9s, 24681357(9)24681357 = 2 and 7s, and 48372615(9)48372615 = 4 to 5s and 36936936(9)369369369 = 3 and 6s. And all of the integers follow a binary expansion 124875 (1,2,4,8,16,32) so the trigrams give a value of 12487512 = 128 (or 256) in 64 Hexagrams to give all values and readings of each created situation as opposites and reversals. The Binary Expansion as with the Fibonacci has no 3,6,9s but their combinations give 3s.6s and 9s. Lastly the values of the I Ching produce the Solfeggio Tones, but I shall leave these matters for you own investigation as the material to allow that are now already out in the public domain - but it has been the I Ching that has given the key to the most ancient knowledge of math that was lost but now is again found to fit the new.

Thanks - Paul.

Hi Water on earth,

Actually, the meaning of each pair of my example should be like the following. (The meaning of 63 other Hexagrams should be in the same way).

The meanings appear as opposites, whatever the nature of the second hexagram is relative to the first. I take from your example that this is derived from a list of set meanings, is this correct? Is there any source available where to get those meanings from? I have seen bits and pieces of the year but nothing complete.

Thanks for the input.

Book with Sequence of Opposites.

Hi All.

So OK the math does interest you particularly well each to their own - so no problem we'll stick to the hexagram meanings and how they fall into place as opposites and not as reversals.

The Trigram Sequence for the Ho Tu is 1 to 8 =

Chien, Sun, Li, Tui, Ken, K'an, Chen, K'un so as I said 1 to 8, 2 to 7, 3 to 6 and 4 to 5 are all opposite binary images that fit the description of Father-Mother 1 to 8 and 1 to 8 as sequences are given in Ho Tu = North 1 to 6, and South 2 to 7 etc, so one sequence is led by Ch'ien as a odd value and the other by K'un as an even value - between which the 8x8 Square's of the Elements are formed. When the values of all opposites are added together they always = 10s or a common equal value in all opposites in each square. 1 to 6 gives a value of 84 = as opposite pairing. This pairing is then found in the Lo Shu which brings all opposites together and in the light of this I had written a book many moon's ago that I have added to down through the years, and indeed only the introduction to this work has been published as The Sum of Things, so this work remains unpublished and for the most part private but here is a link to the WRKs file of it.

All you have to do is put in a password of - IChingCom - and you can download and read 'The Book of Divine Revelations' (The Law's of the Sacred Mountain) and I hope this gives you all the info on the meanings of each opposite and all the symbolic terms within the I Ching based on Wilhelm's edition (It's basically a retranslation and should be read along side Wilhelm's I Ching). This book is open for all to read and share if you find parts of interest to you - it not for sale only sharing. But if anyone wishes to read 'The Sum of Things' now it only available on purchase from ABE Books but it was given as free down load for a good few years.

I have no plans what so ever to publish The Book of Divine Revelations but as the math is copyrighted already under The Sum of Things please respect that aspect of the work, but as all is for sharing and anyone can use it and add to it, as indeed other have already done so please just see if it answers your questions and not take any other consideration into account.

https://files.me.com/paulmartynsmith/18rkq6

So I hope you find this work of interest to you over and above the math part of the Book of Changes as this is the narrative and practice. This book forms over 45 yrs of study but it could be added to greatly now for sure.

My regards - Paul.

Wow, thanks for sharing Paul! You should put a link in I Ching news section though or will be lost in a sea of thread messages here.

I look very often to the inverse (upside-down) hexagram, but I think it is rather complementary. Together they show a complete pattern. The question will highlight one of the two, but seeing its complement makes this first one more clear.
Sometimes you have to adapt (15), other times run ahead full of enthusiasm (16)
Sometimes follow (17), other times clean up (18)
Sometimes come close (19), sometimes overview from above (20)
And so on.

There are not 32 pairs of inverse hexagrams, but 36. See the image top left on this page. Hexagram 1, 2, 29 and 30 form each a complete set. Hexagram 1 is not the upside-down of 2 but of itself. The same goes for all four. They are the creators of this world, two abstract ones and two concrete ones, they don't have any inverse, but they are each others opposite. Same for 27, 28 and 61, 62. But I couldn't find out what makes those four special. If anyone has an idea...

The opposite hexagram (all yang lines yin and vv) is in another way also complementary to the original hexagram. But rather like light is complementary to dark. They are really opposite, but one is not better than the other, one cannot even exist without the other.

Both ways, looking at a hexagram from the viewpoint of its inverse, or from its opposite, tell a lot about the original hexagram.
