In the recent post “What is the Nature of Yi as Encountered in Divination?” I mentioned “summarizing ahead of the presentation of evidence” with respect to the nature and personality of Yi. In this regard, a task I set myself early on in my reading regarding the I Ching was to collect all observations that I came across that addressed this distinctive ‘personality’. The resulting document - which may be viewed as the promised “evidence” - is attached, which I trust may be of interest.

One of the points to stand out is the consistency of the character of that encountered ‘personality’ across a great many independent accounts and testimonies, quite apart from the question of accuracy of insight or prediction of oracular replies. With that said, it is worth also noting that Yi can interact somewhat differently with different individuals (just as people do): as Hilary has commented, “I find it easy to see how people’s personalities are reflected in the Yijing they perceive. (e.g. Carol Anthony’s Sage is censorious and serious but my ‘Yi’ makes jokes; one person’s oracle is biased in favour of action while another clearly favours laissez-faire.)”
