I was thinking about hexagram 4 today and it occurs to me there are certain things we can't learn simply by having someone else tell us about them - we have to experience them. I think getting hex 4 means here is a situation where simple being told the answer (again and again!) isn't working - the person has to go through the experience - it's the only way they can learn.
And perhaps what needs to be learned are things like confidence and having faith - things that can only be acquired through experience.

No; experience is not THE ONLY way one can learn. Although it's interesting the idea of learning from experience in hex 4, and it may be the point in many cases, it would be missleading to understand everytime: oh, hex 4 means that you need to learn from experience. That could lead to disregard your need of guidance and throw away wise advices, making you the arrogant unexperienced.

One approach to Youthful Folly which I've found useful is to think of it as "that which we CHOOSE to ignore.' The things that we prefer to leave alone because we are vaguely uncomfortable about facing them - a very subtle and largely unconscious process. If we can absorb the meaning of a situation from a verbal description we can save a lot of time but sooner or later we need to integrate the meaning at a deeper level as we gain more and more experience. If we repeatedly ignore certain issues we will find ourselves eventually FORCED to address them.

Great insight! I think 4.6 particularly describes the being forced to address the issues part - like you've tried everything else so finally you have to say, "Hmm...maybe I should try following the directions.."

I have got hex 4uc many, many times, when I have asked a question that I have asked before - maybe in a different guise, maybe several times. Once I asked a question about a boyfriend - twice about him in about a week. We went out for several months and I asked the same question. I got hex 4uc. Even after quite a time lapse I was being told - you have asked this already - why are you asking me again. Its quite uncanny.

It is quite a childlike hexagram - almost saying - you need to experience this a bit first, to understand that you cant have unlimited amounts of ice-cream....

Sometimes a thread arrives that sparks a thought or a memory - as this did for me. Those 4uc thoughts seemed relevant. I have spent the past few days thinking about hex 4 - it is my son>s birthday today and I suppose it invokes memories of birthdays, ice-cream, children.....

It is strange therefore, that for several castings over this period I have got 4uc, 4.25, and a resulting hex 4. (From hex 59.5)

Is this because I was thinking of hex 4 because of this thread, was I thinking about it anyway, or has hex 4 just got particular relevance right now??

Interesting

There are different kinds of learning. One type is intellectual knowledge. An other is experiential. Some types of learning can only be done experientially, and that includes life experience. This world is a school. We learn by experience. Things that are taught us will not be of value until we have actually applied the knowledge in the real world. That is the only way it can work. This type of knowledge changes us in our interior being. It cannot be passed on directly to anyone else, one can only point to the way, they cannot BE the way for anyone else. Our bodies are of this world. Our spirit is not. Our spirit is a stranger and a pilgrim in this world. (See hexagram 56) Our spirit and our soul are only here to gain experience, wisdom, and guidance. In this type of learning there is only one means, experiential. The words that our teachers give us in this respect will have little meaning until we have applied them experientially. This is the most important kind of learning. Intellectual learning can help us get jobs and win trivia games, and give us social confidence, but it is not the real thing. Knowledge gained must be applied, and in the process we often get bloody noses, but that is the nature of the experience of our soul and spirit.

Often we are shown things, or led to experiences that we do not comprehend. All the signs are there - all the information necessary within our grasp. We need several attempts perhaps to 'see' - to experience ways of being that enable us to engage with this wisdom.
