I am a Chinese I Ching expert, today I would like to share some of my study on I Ching:

(1) Changing Hexagram
If a line of a hexagram changes from Yin to Yang, or changes from Yang to Yin, we will call this line a “changing line”. The hexagram after line changing is called “Changing Hexagram”.
1.jpg

(2)The Opposite Hexagram
When all the lines of a Hexagram are changing lines, the corresponding Changing Hexagram is called “Opposite Hexagram”.
2.jpg

(3)The Inverse Hexagram
If we turn a hexagram upside down, we will get a new hexagram, which is called “Inverse Hexagram”.
3.jpg

In I Ching, the two neighbouring hexagrams are either a pair of Opposite Hexagrams or a pair of Inverse Hexagrams. For example, Hexagram 01 and Hexagram 02 are a pair of Opposite Hexagrams, Hexagram 03 and Hexagram 04 are a pair of Inverse Hexagrams, Hexagram 05 and Hexagram 06 are a pair of Inverse Hexagrams, Hexagram 07 and Hexagram 08 are a pair of Inverse Hexagrams, and so on.

4.jpg

I have published a book on Amazon, which name is "I Ching Codes Predicting the Future", now I am writing my second book. In the second book, I will share more interesting konwledges about I Ching.

As a Chinese, I want to say that I Ching is really hard to translate, even many Chinese do not understand it. That's why I spend 3 years to translate the full text of I Ching into English. And I truly hope more and more people in the world know this mysterious book well.

Your attachments don't work for me. There is also the case where the inverse is the same as all lines changing as in 17,18 and 63,64.

Do you apply these patterns in divination?

I have uploaded the attach images again, could you try to click it again?
Yes, I agree with you. In fact, the inverse hexagram and opposite hexagram are both the special cases of the changing hexagrams.
In I Ching, the inverse hexagram and opposite hexagram are important concepts. As you may know, in the 64 hexagrams, every two neigbour hexgrams are either inverse hexagrams or opposite hexagrams.

The inverse hexagram and opposite hexagram have different meannings. For example, the inverse hexagram means that you should try putting yourself in the other person’s position and thinking that way in order to think in completeness.
For example, Hexagram 34 is "Powerful Force", whose inverse hexagram is Hexagram 33 "Retreat", when you have a strong army in a war, you enemies will retreat.

Hi xuesongyu

Hope you’re fine. In your second book which you are writing presently, does it deals with the questions below?

Sometime ago, I came across a book on feng-shui (geomancy). Quite an interesting book, I would say.

The 8 trigrams it presented have numbers allocated them, for example:

☰ 乾 Qián - 1, 4, 9
☱ 兌 Duì - 4, 2, 9
☲ 離 Lí - 3, 2, 7
☳ 震 Zhèn - 4, 8, 3
☴ 巽 Xùn - 5, 3, 8
☵ 坎 Kǎn - 1, 6
☶ 艮 Gèn - 5, 7, 10
☷ 坤 Kūn - 8, 5, 10

Questions:
(1) Are the numbers connected with the relevant trigram correct?
Every one of the trigram has 3 numbers except for Kan (Water) which has 2.

(2) Where do these numbers derive from?

(3) What are the significances of these numbers?

(4) How does one use these numbers to assist in Yiching prediction?

(5) If none of your books deal with the above questions, can you please direct me where I could find such information?

Hello Globalex:

It's quite surprising to see such questions, because the questions which you asked are advanced knowledge about I Ching. In my second book, I will introduce some of questions(but not all the questions). However, let me try to give answers here:
(1) Are the numbers connected with the relevant trigram correct?
(2) Where do these numbers derive from?
I think not all of the numbers are correct. In I Ching, we have two types of arrangement for the Eight Trigrams, I call them The Primordial Arrangement and the Posterior Arrangement, for the Primordial Arrangement, the numbers are as follows: 乾1, 兌2, 離3, 震4, 巽5, 坎6, 艮7, 坤8. While for the Posterior Arrangement, the numbers are as follows: 坎1, 坤2, 震3, 巽4, Central number 5, 乾6, 兌7, 艮8 and 離9. In my first book "I Ching codes predicting the future", the cover image is the Primordial Arrangement, and the national flag of Korea is also according to the Primordial Arrangement.

(3) What are the significances of these numbers?
In the Primordial Arrangement, the number describes the basic feature of things in the world(How things come out after the Big Bang). In the Primordial Arrangement, if you connect the number in order(from 1 to 8), you will get a "S" curve which is call "Taiji Curve". The numbers in the Primordial Arrangement sometimes are used to generate a hexagram. (We have all kinds of methods to generate a hexagram)
The number in the Posterior Arrangement can be used to describe the quantity of Yin and Yang in Feng shui theory.

(4) How does one use these numbers to assist in Yiching prediction?
In my opinion, you do not need to know these numbers when you make a prediction. Because the author of I Ching had shown the result in the text of I Ching. So what you need to do is understand the text of I Ching and predict the result(in my book, I translate I Ching by myself, because there are errors in some English version of I Ching)
(5) If none of your books deal with the above questions, can you please direct me where I could find such information?
In my second book, I will talk more details about the basic knowledge about I Ching, and I will also explain some hexagrams to show the philosophy of I Ching. You should know I Ching is a philosophy book, the most important function of I Ching is telling philosophy, in order to let people have good moral. According to I Ching's theory, if you are a good moral person person, you may have good luck even if you get a bad result in a prediction.

(2) Where do these numbers derive from?

The numbers are derived from two pictures: first, the xiantianbagua 先天八卦 trigram circle,

xiantian-sm.jpg

Start with Qian with 1 at the top and follow counter-clockwise, crossing over at Zhen (see latest post from xuesongyu.

and second the hetu 河圖 'river map'.

The numbers have the following Elements (from http://www.hiakz.com/hetu.asp):

The trigrams are linked to the Elements as well (Qian & Dui - Metal, Li - Fire, Zhen & Xun - Wood, Kan - Water, Kun & Gen - Earth. Through the Elements they get their extra numbers.

Hi xuesongyu,

Thank you for your reply.

I have been trying to understand and learn the I Ching since the beginning of 2012. I have gone through the beginner’s level. I am now trying to read books on the intermediate and advanced levels. Unfortunately, there are not many of them in the English language. Even there are, the information contained therein is either wrong or badly explained.

Presently, my interpretation of the hexagram is still not very good but it does serve me to some extent. It has assists me tremendously in directing me the right path to take. The questions which I asked of you come from some Feng-Shui book which I read at a local library. I am intrigued by the mechanics and mathematics of the I Ching more than its interpretation. I found out recently that the numbers attached to the trigrams were calculated using the Celestial Stems, Horary Branches, Sexagenary Cycle and the interactions of the 5 elements.

Anyway, thank you once again for your kind explanation.

Hi hmesker,

Thank you for your answers to question 2.

I have been fiddling around with both the Lo Map and the Ho Map for quite a while. But it seems that it’s not that easy to derive those numbers.

However, just a couple of days ago, I came across some books on the Nine Palaces or Nine Star Astrology using the Celestial Stems and Horary Branches system – viola, the answer is right under my nose. It appears that geomancy is based on this Nine Palaces/Star system.

Also, the website - http://www.hiakz.com/hetu.asp) – doesn’t seems to exist anymore. Nevertheless, thank you once again for your kind assistance.
