Time span of prediction.

As I was reading posts, a subject popped into my head that I thought may make for some interesting input and insight. That being, the time period in which an oracle?s lesson, advice, prediction, will take to play out. I?ve my own observations about this, but will open the subject to all, first. I hope you will share your thoughts and experiences.

Hi Candid,

Good question --it would be great to crack-the-code, wouldn't it?
happy.gif

I think that the time period would be highly dependent on the *nature* of the question. For example, a destiny reading easily follows the course of lifetime, right? So basically, unless a time-oriented question is asked to begin with, it may be a hard thing to determine AFTER casting because our free-will plays so much into it. That's my thought.

Hi and thanks, Dharma.

Yes, destiny reading does certainly reach to the long side of the question. And the short being, an immediate answer to an eminent condition. Have you ever asked a question which was focused on an immediate situation, but found out that it took several days, weeks, months to actually play out?

Hi Candid,

As a matter of fact, back in September when you and I were having a bit of a spat,
happy.gif
I cast I Ching for insight into how the situation was likely to evolve if left on it's own. I vaguely recall getting a somewhat positive response which surprised me because I really didn't see it going that way.

As time passed, I even began to doubt that the results of the cast had anything to do with that situation at all. It took many more months for the situation to smooth over but I Ching was correct. (I wish I could remember what I had cast, but I don't have the papers I recorded it on anymore.)

Spat? With moi? *chuckles* Yes, that's exactly the type of thing I was referring to.

There have been many times when a reading has made no sense to me, whatsoever, then over a period of time, it begins to unfold "as foretold."

Other times, I've asked a more far reaching general question and have received an answer that so fitted my immediate specific situation.

I've wondered if this is a function of my own inner focus and priority or an overseer's guiding hand.

Good subject! I'm itching to hear your ideas on this one, Candid. Most of the time in the text seems subjective: 'three years' meaning 'painfully long time', for example. All I can think is that if you want to know about a specific time-span, better specify that in your question. (Like Dharma says, deciding afterwards is not likely to be objective!) Maybe even say six months and allocate one line per month, and then trust Yi to play by your rules. I have yet to experiment with this in any detail, though. (Anyone?)

Dharma, why not keep a record of all your readings in a nice, big notebook (or computer program, or whatever)? Or am I teaching Grandma to suck eggs?

I know there are some hugely experienced I Ching diviners out there (Candid. John. Louise...). Has anyone developed a system for this?

Greetings To All...

Interesting Question Candid. I agree totaly with Dharma. There are alot of variables involved with a question like this, However there are ways to do it.

I learned a Method Many years ago, called the Hu Tien Method. Basically after the Hexagram was obtained, the rule was to add the numbers of the Inner Trigram and the Outer Trigram and the Number of the Hour? This was based upon the Hu Tien arrangement of Trigrams. 1. Chien 2. Tui 3. Li 4. Chen 5. Sun 6. Kan 7. Ken 8. Kun

example; I will use the time when you started this thread. Year =1 Month=3 Day=31 Total=35 divided by 8= the remainder of 3 Which would be the trigram Li.

Next we take The Year, Month, Day, Time (Military Time) to get the inner Trigram 35+18=53 Divided by 8= a remainder of 5 which would be Sun. The Hexagram would be 37 (Family). To get the stressed line divide 53 by 6 and use the remainder 5.

Now to calculate the time, we would take the number of both trigrams, and the time Candid posted his message which would be 3+5+18=26

Now the rule was, When the subjective Diviner was sitting or laying we say the energy comes slower and multiply 26 by 2 to get the time. 26X2=52 This could be days, hours, minutes, weeks, years, months, depending on the nature of the question. When the diviner is standing still, we take the sum of 3+5+18=26 directly, again this could be days, hours, minutes, etc, depending on the Nature of the question. When the Diviner is walking, we say the event will come faster, and we divide the sum by 2 (3+5+18=26 divided by 2=13)
This could be Days, Months, Hours, etc, depending on the nature of the question.

This is a very interesting study. Each trigram has certain significators that indicate that these events are coming to pass. Normally I use a method similar to the one I just described, and I know how long that I must use ritual to make these events manifest themselves.
I hope This Helps

Greetings To All...

I have made a big mistake in my caculation. The Year number should be 10 and not 1 so the numbers should be as follows.

10+3+31=44 44 divided by 8= remainder of 4 which would be Chen

10+3+31+18=62 divided by 8= remainder of 6 which would be Kan

Chen above Kan would be 40 Relief. 62 divided by 6 = a remainder of 2. Indicates line 2 becoming 16.

but the time factor is 4+6+18=28

Please accept my apology

Funny you should bring this up Candid. Of late I seem to find the Yi changing its mind very quickly. The readings seem very accurate predictions of the next day or week - lately it just won't seem to talk long term with me.
For example I asked about the advisability of encouraging a relationship or not. Yi seems to tell me the next little installment of the relationship, not the whole picture...ie I asked and got 33,lines 3 and 4 and thought it was over- -well there was a withdrawal by him but only for a few days, then I get some hexagrams giving the go ahead so to speak - but only for a few days..
This seems to happen more and more - the time span of the answer getting shorter and shorter..
Hmm- perhaps I'm asking short term questions, but I don't think so. Perhaps it is that I can only manage with short term answers at the moment..yes thats probably it ! Isn't it strange that as I'm typing here I answer my own questions !

In the past though I have had very long term answers that I just couldn't understand at the time, but made perfect sense later. I once asked about finding somewhere to live and repeatedly got
25,3. This line talks about unfairness, the farmers loss being the wanderers gain. It turned out I got a place to live because previous tennants had trashed the place and left without paying rent - so the landlords loss was my gain - well thats how I understood it.
Often i don't really trust answer till I have repeatedly received it over a period of time. I do record all the hexagrams I've thrown - numbered pages 1- 64 with the questions written by them. This is quite helpful to me and I also notice the same hexagrams come up over and over again, while some I NEVER receive for a whole year !

Hi folks - I am a new member.

I have greatly enjoyed, and learned, from your lively discussions... thanks

Re. time.

Hmm, there are one or two trigrams I have received often over a number of years... essentially I kept making the same mistake in my life... the I is very patient!!!

Diana Ffarrington Hook (The I Ching and You) proposes that we ask the I for the time span, or date, in a supplementary question.

She gives a table of time, dates, years which I think she has taken from the World of Thought Arrangement of Hexagrams.

I have used this with good results.

There is a caution to working out time and dates though. Depending on the nature of change (or fixedness)and depending on the variable influences that might come to bearon a situation,(including ones own actions)then times of likely outcomes and durations can alter... I try to take this into account with my questions re. time

If anyone would like a jpeg of these tables and the supporting text I would be happy to email it to them.

Greetings, Cheiron, good to have you here. (The name is a good one. Are you thinking of the centaur?)

I'd also like the jpeg, thanks! (I think the book is out of print, isn't it?). Does she explain how she uses the hexagrams' 'world of thought' counterparts in readings?

Hi Hilary,

Regarding your idea of having a notebook to keep a record of my I Ching readings... Well it would seem that though you aren't exactly 'teaching' Grandma to suck eggs, you *are* reminding her to get 'cracking'. I haven't been as orderly and thorough with this as I've been with other things. (This sounds very deja vu all of a sudden...hmm...topic on another page, I imagine) I will be assigning a notebook to this shortly --it's on my list of things "to do".

Hi

Thanks for the welcome

Yes... it is the Centaur...saddly that centaur's mythical duality is my own... and if you know the myths... well I have a lot of fun getting out of balance... its the picking the pieces up afterwards that is difficult...rofl

The digrams have been emailed to you both... please let me know if you don't get them.

Appologies? On re- reading Diana Ffarington Hook? She takes the chart for date time from The Book of Change by John Blofeld. As you will know all hexagrams tie in with time and date and indeed the arrangement of the Yi Jing directly correlates with Chinese Astrology. Thus time date and season are all available? I seem to remember that Wilhelm talks about this in his translation.

In her own book (The I Ching and You) P?s 26 ? 27, she talks of time and dates as follows (my numbering):

1 ??Seasons are often referred to in the text and some doubt may arise for those living in the southern Hemisphere when, for example ?the third month in the springtime? is mentioned. But being based on the Zodiac spring and autumn mean the spring and autumn in the northern hemisphere. That is the Zodiac signs of Aries Libra and as a result the seasons must be reversed in the southern hemisphere.

2 ?It should also be borne in mind that more often than not, mention of the seasons is purely symbolic. For example ?in the wintertime? may indicate a time of old age and inactivity, of leaving things undisturbed to mature quietly.?

3 ?When it is important to know the exact date on which a certain event is to take place it can be plotted by turning to [the diagram attached] and asking the I Ching on what day will so and so happen? Then ignoring the text of the hexagram thrown, find the date on the chart. The very day itself will be indicated by the moving line. In all but four of the hexagrams (which cover three months each) the hexagram covers six days corresponding with the six lines of the hexagram. If more than one line has moved than more than one day will be involved. If no line has moved than the event will fall inside the six day period indicated by the hexagram.

4 ?It should be realised that because the Chinese new year begins at the start of Aquarius and ends ?. 19th February?. The first month is February and not January.?

5 ?The I Ching refers to periods of time such as three years, ten years and so on. These can sometimes be taken literally, but more often indicate a rough guide to a short or long time, ten years indicating a complete cycle.

6 ?As a broad guide yang refers to a day and Yin to a month. However three days may refer to three months depending on the general meaning of the hexagram. Once again intuition has to be called into play to arrive at the truth?

I hope this is of some benefit.

My own experience is that the Yi Jing really tries to communicate if questions are appropriate and that one can decide on any convention. Diana F. supports this view and recommends that the person casting the Oracle concentrates on both the question and any convention whilst undertaking the casting. I have had good results doing this.

Regards

Greetings To All...

I just wanted to say that after reviewing the information brought to our attention through Cheiron, I find the information to be of Great Value. I have heard of the 60 year cycle, but the table of dates was new to me. I will use this information in a applicable way to improve the quality of my life. Thanks again Cheiron.
