Hello

First of all I would like to thank you all for sharing your love and understanding of the I Ching so kindly and generously. I posted a couple of threads over the last year and your answers and feedback inspired me to make use of the wonderful resources that are available on this site, for which I am truly grateful. Your comments really made a difference to me.

I am trying to follow the advice offered here on how to consult the I Ching and I feel I am getting a bit better with my interpretations but I was wondering whether I could get your views on a recent reading? It's about work, an old chestnut of mine...

I had a bit of a difficult time with my job over the last year. For background, back in November I posted a thread which was of great help to me (http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?t=8965). In the end, I tried to deal with the situation by changing my attitude, which worked to some extent. Recently, things have started shifting a bit: I have been given new roles and responsibilities, which mean more work but also new opportunities. The thing is, the new roles put me on the spotlight and it is not a position I enjoy. I feel out of my depth and I worry all the time that I am going to make a mess. When things work out, there is a lot of satisfaction, but I swing all the time between misery and excitement and I am wondering (again..) whether I am on the right track. I asked:

"what about putting my efforts into finding another job?"
51.3 > 55

"How about committing myself to the current situation for another year, embracing the challenges and the emotional rollercoaster?"
Hex 9

"Please give me an image about the kind of work that is right for me at this moment in time"
20.4.6 > 45

Your views on these readings would be much appreciated. The meaning of the lines of the third reading in particular are not very clear to me: I am not sure if the I Ching is telling me something about the attitude I need to find an answer to my question, or whether it is answering my question, but if so, what kind of work is it pointing at?

Many thanks in advance for any thoughts you may offer.

All the best.

"what about putting my efforts into finding another job?"

****Line 51.3 says yes, look for another job. You need to move.

"How about committing myself to the current situation for another year, embracing the challenges and the emotional rollercoaster?"
Hex 9

*****Says that you can make a success of this job but you are going to have to overcome many problems before you can claim that success. Others at work can also be very challenging to deal with, and that makes life harder.

"Please give me an image about the kind of work that is right for me at this moment in time"
20.4.6 > 45

*****It suggests a manager/boss type position where you are allowed to make your own decisions about the management and running of the business.

Time to Move On?

Hello Pippa,

What about putting my efforts into finding another job? Hex 51,3 > 55

Hex 51 represents the stirring of thoughts and the application of cautious introspection. Chen follows Chen, impulse follows provocation, thought follows thought. The shock of thunder is terrifying but after it fades we gaze around and find that we are still standing, we look at ourselves and laugh out loud.
If we move whilst dazed and bewildered by unclear thoughts, we invite danger; if we move on a reactive impulse caused by unsettling thoughts, we likewise invite danger. Reaction often has the appearance of clarity, but it is dictated by externals rather than by calm evaluation.
Action should be based on neither unclear bewilderment, nor on fearful impulse. Only balanced action originating from inner clarity brings lasting success.

Third Yin: Shock comes and makes one distraught. If shock spurs one to action, one remains free of misfortune.
Disturbing events or thoughts have arisen and must be met inwardly with an equal force. The action that you are urged to engage in is an internal one of cautious introspection rather than striking out externally. A yin line in a yang position, on the verge of danger (upper nuclear trigram K'an), this is not a good basis for external action.
Any doubts you might have on this should be cleared if you consider the Fan Yao (the equivalent line position in the Zhi Gua, the resultant hexagram). The Fan You can often be seen as offering a parallel or complementary sense of meaning to the original line text. In this case the Fan Yao, 55,3, reads "The underbrush is of such abundance that the small stars can be seen at noon. He breaks his right arm. No blame." The possibility of effective external action here is eclipsed to the point that it's as though you broke your right arm. This is not a good time to move. Any prospective employer is unlikely to have a clear perception of your true effectiveness. To quote Wang Bi - "When it comes to this one trying to get employed, he should break his right arm instead."
Likewise, the nuclear progression, Hex 39,2,4 > 28, gives a clear indication that this direction (finding another job) is, at present, obstructed and that you should turn back; any forceful insistence would be excessive and could result in an unstable, unbalanced outcome.

Your follow-up reading, Hex 20,4,6 > 45, is urging you to reassess your view of the situation. Like a guest in a foreign kingdom, you are advised to adjust your outlook to bring it in line with a wider, more universal perception. Top yang suggests that your outlook is possibly affected by restlessness. This reading isn't answering your question on what kind of work, directly. It's urging you to re-evaluate and adjust the view implied within your question - in other words it's saying 'don't look at it this way.' This reading is entirely consistent with the meaning of your earlier reading, 51,3 > 55

Hope this helps.

Peter
