Hi everyone,
How do you decide when it's time to ask the I Ching the same question regarding an ongoing situation?

I personally do it when I feel I have elaborated the issues I had to addresse, and there's a change in how I feel/experience the situation.

Thanks in advance for your insights.

I usually specify a time frame in my questions.
E.g. what's my best action regarding X subject this week?
Or, what will happen with X subject this month/week/day? (or more or less like this)

Good idea to ask again when you feel things have actually changed.

Hi Diamanda,
Thanks for your answer.

I consult the I Ching about a present situation. For example " what's the nature of this situation ...".

Are the I Ching suited to predict the future?

The I Ching is a form of divination. All divination is suited to predict the future. Saying that, the future can sometimes be predicted, sometimes not, because the future often depends on our actions.

Ciao Diamanda,
thanks for your answer.

In my experience divination - of any kind- doesn't offer the tools to predict future. However, deciding that the outcome of a cast is what the future will bring to a person , it make the person behave/act in a certain direction. At times their actions will meet the I Ching prediction.

In my experience, being present and embodied enfolds the process of individuation , and awareness brings wholeness. In my very limited experience, the I Ching clarify the process of individuation within the moment I use them.

Well you asked if the I Ching can be used to predict the future.

Divination, including the I Ching, has been used for thousands of years to predict the future.
In my experience humanity hasn't been wrong for so long - divination can very well predict the future.
But of course each to their opinions.

Apotropaicatom, I don't know of any rules for how often you should ask about the same situation, but in general I think less is more. I think you should at the very least give yourself enough time to understand what is being said, advised and suggested, and also to give yourself enough time to live with that newfound wisdom or advice.

Another piece of advice is to avoid re-asking or re-re-asking, etc, just because by you don't like the advice you're getting. I see that all to often with romantic issues:

I asked Yi if so-and-so loves me, and got
Hex x changing to hex c.
That sounds dire, so I asked again and got
Hex b changing into hex g.
I didn't really understand that, so I asked again and got
Hex h unchanging
That sounds like they're not the right person for me, so I asked again
Etc, etc, etc.

You end up with 20 hexagrams and 34 changing lines, and I have to wonder, how is yi or anyone else supposed to make sense of that mess?

As to Yi predicting the future, I believe the Yi often deals with what our current situations or attitudes are, which, if you were to pay attention to this, would of course influence the future - but I don't particularly see it as a strictly predictive tool - but that's just me.

Regard, David.

Hi David,
Thank for your reply. I agree with what you wrote and I especially resonate with this:

"I believe the Yi often deals with what our current situations or attitudes are, which, if you were to pay attention to this, would of course influence the future - but I don't particularly see it as a strictly predictive tool - but that's just me"
