Hello everyone,

I have been entertaining myself colouring in hexagrams...
trigram patterns

I find the patterns that show up fascinating... would love to hear any rationales you can think of for any of them. It makes sense that the 'parents' should feature most strongly in the first two decades, and not at all after 50. And it's interesting that they are at the centre of the other three decades: 23-26, 33-36, 43-46. None of which I'd noticed before.

Why are the 40s such a great decade of dui and xun?

Why no li until 13?

And so on... All quite obvious things I'd never really noticed before my colouring-in exercise. Comments welcome. Corrections, too...

Hilary-

Tell me more about your exercise please!! This sounds like a rich and rewarding way to process Yi "stuff" without being limited by the verbal part of one's brain. On a slightly related tangent, I wonder what music based on Yi would sound like? I wonder how Yi has influenced the history of Chinese (and other) art... Oh my, why do I always have more questions than I do time and energy??

Very interesting Hilary. I've got to spend some time staring at the patterns.

Rinda,

There is quite a bit of music inspired by the I Ching. The works of John Cage come to mind. For a very nice CD with very soothing instrumental music you could buy the I Ching Symphony I am sure you'll enjoy it. As for your questions on Chinese art and history, examples are everywhere.

Cool list Brad plus an interesting synchronicity too: I was adding a link to Lorraine's site in my board a few minutes ago. Her ears must be ringing...

BTW, the only one I have is the Steiner one but I do enjoy it a lot. I'll see if I can find the other ones. Thanks.

Rinda, have you tried drumming your way through the hexagrams? Or just living/ breathing the rhythm of your latest reading? Pure I Ching music.

I'll go looking for audio extracts at Amazon - thanks for the list, Brad!

As for why I started colouring things in - the role of trigrams in the sequence (inbetween pairs rather than within them) has been dawning on me lately. Eg the way li (on its first appearance in the book) reconnects heaven and earth in 13, following from 12. Or the way growth emerges from the mountain from 52 to 53. Or - the first one that leapt out at me - how the thunder of Enthusiasm becomes the inner 'engine' of Following.

Then I started counting up how often these trigram connections occurred, and whereabouts in the sequence... and got on to counting the occurrences of the trigrams themselves. When I excitedly shared this with Stephen Karcher (who probably noticed it all a while ago - somehow I expect Brad and others did, too...) he kindly suggested I start colouring things in ;) . I thought that if I just stuck these things online with minimal commentary, I'd avoid distracting people from seeing patterns I've missed.

Hilary,

Would you be willing to show us what your coloring looks like? ...perhaps a photo or part or all of what you've done so far?
