The visual method:

Throw six coins.Without looking directly arrange them in a vertical line in front of you.

Heads are yang, tails are yin.You are now looking at the hexagram.

Coins which are upside-down i.e. have the image or symbol on them (such as the head of a monarch/state representative or coat of arms) pointing towards you are changing lines.

The binary method:

Throw six coins.Without looking directly arrange them in a horizontal line in front of you.

Heads are 1's, tails are 0's.

Convert the binary number thus revealed into a decimal number. This is the number of the hexagram. However, if one gets all tails it should be taken as a 64.

Coins which are upside-down are changing lines. The bottom line of the hexagram is the coin on the far right, the top line is the coin on the far left.

Probabilities:

For the probabilities of the three-coin method then what one considers as the precise top of the coin should be pointing straight down, with no inclination to the left or right, for it to be a changing line.

For the probabilities of the yarrow sticks method then the above only applies in the case of tails. For heads one can allow a changing line even if the symbol/image in question points in a general downward direction.

The degree of stringency applied to deciding which lines are changing is entirely up to you.

Even if you get an unchanging, stable hexagram a coin which tilts downwards can be indicative of a line with a tendency to change.

Another method (a better one, i think)

occurred to me recently.

for a concise, simple answer (like for a yes or no question) throw six coins, arrange them in a vertical line, look up the corresponding hexagram and read the judgment only.forget the changing lines.

for a more detailed, indepth look (for a complex situation, or a situation spread out over a period of time) throw the coins again to cast a second hexagram. Read the judgement.compare the two hexagrams to see which lines in the first hexagram have changed, and read the related text.you can repeat this process as many times as necessary.

you can use a single coin if you wish.toss six times to get your hexagram.but that's a one-coin method....
