hi everyone,

I have a situation here . .
maybe some of you will remember me going on and on about my planning to do a phd
. . well, the plot has thickened and I'd appreciate some help
while trying to untie my knots and fears about research I also took some exams for a teaching position -I didn't really think of succeeding there, the chances were slight, but I thought I should keep options open and see how things turn out
What it turned out was that I got the job . . it is a permanent thing with decent salary and it might even turn out to provide the funding for my research IF I manage to get a leave of absence as soon as possible . .
BUT it looks complicated and my plans could go off the rails. For one, what I want to do is a bit unusual (what's new under the sun?) and people seem reluctant to accede to it. The final decision will be called by a committee responsible for such matters . .

so I'm getting seriously anxious about it -feels like a tight balance, I can't afford to lose the job but my heart is set to the dreaded phd

and I ask:
-talk to me about this Yi . .
10.5 to 38
(ok, this is what I'm doing but 38 does NOT look good)

-what are the chances I'll get the leave of absence?
50.1,2,5 to 13
yes, a fellowship of men will cook the final outcome but I have a hard time reading through the lines . . I'm not sure if this sheds positive light on my goal or if it is strictly impartial and once again Yi is training me in going with the flow and not asking too much for reassurance . .
so if someone out there has had more experience with these lines, especially line 5, your insights would be really welcome . .

p.s: please don't sugar-coat this, I need to understand what I'm biting through . .

thank you

You asked Yi to tell you about this, and it described your situation. Treading on the Tail of the Tiger, and facing Opposition. Huang describes the symbol for Opposition as two eyes facing in different directions ("eyes that do not look at each other"), diverging viewpoints, like you and the committee.

Then you sensibly asked about the thing you really want to know, and you got the Cauldron, Lines 1, 2 and 5.

Since these three lines have radically different messages, they could be a timeline of events, or possible events, or obstacles to work through before victory.

Line 1: There is no blame in using unorthodox methods to get what you want. Probably you have already used them, but, as in the example, even taking a concubine was successful for the all important goal of having a male heir. So take whatever steps are necessary to remove the blockage to get what you want.

Line 2: A positive line, reminding you that you will have the resources to go and get what you want. The cauldron is full, and even though others are afflicted, and in difficulty, there problems won't reach you. Not only is there no blame, but there is good fortune.

Line 5: This is such a positive line.:) It indicates a continuing source of wealth and enlightenment, and indicated by the yellow ears and golden handles. There is only a caution to avoid arrogance and stay receptive to others.

I take H13 here to mean more than just that the committee decides your fate; it says something about your relationship to the other men....H13 is not just a group of people thrown together, it is more about making a community, through effort and leadership. So perhaps you have a role in helping these men be a community, and that is part of the process of unblocking the cauldron and reaching Line 5.

50.5: In my experience, this line represents a time when synchronous good luck comes to us. A time of sychronicity. It is marked by a calm mind and a relaxed way of going about things. Other people just naturally want to help us.

H13 follows H12 in the sequence of the hexagrams, and it represents the way out of stagnation, disagreements, and opposition. The way out is that we finally understand the futility of trying to accomplish everything all alone and we become willing to work together with others. You will meet them halfway, and they will be willing to meet you halfway, too. It could be that your personal goals will be "cooked," with the result that your outlook will broaden out: a real transformation of your point of view.

Hi Dora

Looking at your readings , and without knowing how this things work, a question came in my mind.
Is there something in you Phd that would benefit them ?

hi Maria

if there is sth in my research to benefit them . . in theory, yes. I believe that I want to do can be applied in many contexts (in any context actually that involves the act of reading), so in that sense it could inspire a new understanding of the act of studying . .
I'm not sure though how much people in this workplace would go into the trouble of looking at it like that . . in this case packaging or status is more important and I've tried to present my claim as best as possible -quite some 22 going into that application letter
. . but you know how things work in the greek public services' domain Maria . .
is it any wonder that Yi has used 18 to describe it? (I got 18.5 for my letter so I keep trusting . . )
one interesting thing in this whole issue though is that I can see a steady flow of associations between the various readings I've had -reading the bigger patterns

oh and I just wanted to say that I've been keeping in my thoughts the comments I got both from Tiger and Ginnie . . Tiger I think you've absolutely nailed line 1 . . spot on!! and I savour your insight on 13 Ginnie and the potential transformation it implies.
the rest too of course, but these have been particularly striking for me . . thanks again!

hi everyone . . time for feedback

just today learned that I got my leave of absence :))) . . I'd like to thank you all for the encouragement and support here and in the other thread that was indirectly linked with this . .

reading again Ginnie's and Tiger's explanation of 13 makes so much sense now . . what was cooking all this time was not only the process of my leaving, but also the melting and co-operation that happens with people you meet everyday for a period of time when you understand you can see eye to eye . . well, not in everything but enough to turn a drab job into teasing and laughing, and that started happening lately and what started as 50.1 and 50.2 was slowly turning into 50.5 . .
so I'm leaving this place for a year with no regrets for where I'm going but with a heavy heart . . who would have thought!
. . off for the bigger caldron . . .
thanks everyone!!
