Here's the updater page, where you'll find the updater program to download, along with instructions (not really necessary, but it makes me feel useful).

New or new-ish things in this version:
  • no more muddled lines in my translation/commentary or LiSe's (thanks to the people who reported these!)
  • an option to restrict the quick 'entry filter' to search on tags only, for speed
  • a desktop/ taskbar icon for your journal. (You'll need to create this - see the updater page for how.)

What is the character in the icon, what does it mean? (It's a very handsome icon. :))

Why, thank you. :flirt:

(It's Justin's work - I hate making icons.)

The character is zhong, meaning 'centre', as in zhong fu, Hexagram 61. It may show a flagstaff planted to mark the centre of a settlement - or (and I like this idea best) it may show a drum mounted on a pole. So that gives the idea of something that resonates through the centre. It also has meanings like 'centred', balanced and connected. It seemed like a good thing to be clicking to bring up a journal.

'not really necessary' ? Of course it's necessary, I'd never have managed otherwise. I've only just managed to import from my old journal and am beginning to find my way around the Resonance Journal. It's scary but I'm making headway.

I wasn't sure whether to do this update because I am still on the free trial version 1.2. However I followed your instructions and was happy to see the 'success' button.

What I don't understand is what the icon is for...?. Is this an icon where every time there is another update I click the icon and it automatically updates ?

I'm not computer software savvy as you know and am not ashamed to ask stupid questions :flirt: as everyone knows I'm impossibly dim in this area. This software can be challenging for people like me so please continue to give clear instructions like these for all updates and everything.

Minion reporting ;)....the icon is to identify the program and give it some visual identity, like a product or company logo. Every software program I know of has one - without them, you wouldn't know what was what in your taskbar without hovering over each one. Other examples you might be familiar with are the blue "e" for Internet Explorer, the picture of a calculator for Windows Calculator, the little bluebird for the Twitter website, etc. Resonance Journal's new icon replaces the coffee cup you've been seeing in previous versions, which is Java's icon (Java being what Resonance Journal is written in).

All it really "does" is start up the program when you click on it, just like if you have Microsoft Notepad pinned to your taskbar, you can start up Notepad by clicking on its icon. Also, depending on an icon's location (taskbar, desktop, Start menu), Windows assigns various right-click functions to them.

It has nothing to do with updates. Software can have a built-in "check for updates" feature, but that's a feature - the icon itself is simply a graphic.

Oh yes, even I know what icons are generally for, what I mean is why do we have an icon just for one update ? I mean the update is done now so what's the icon for....oh hang on maybe the icon is the new icon for the journal, will try.

Tried it ...it isn't the journal it's the update thing. So what I'm saying is I've done the 1.3 update now so why do I need this icon ? I imagine it is because this icon will be a shortcut for me to do more updates in future ? Why else would it be there ?

You mean slave.

 I stand corrected. (But I am thousands of miles away, so :p)

I misunderstood your question, sorry - you meant the Journal Updater icon, right, a shortcut to which is still on my desktop as well? The thing that looks like a gear, with a green arrow and a little shield? That I can't answer.

Maybe it can be deleted; maybe not. Maybe just let it be. Justin or Hilary will have to tell us.

Sorry, missed this. If you mean the updater icon, with the cog and the green arrow, you can certainly delete the icon from your desktop, and I can't think of any reason why you shouldn't also uninstall the program if you want (not that it will hurt anything by sitting there).

Just because I can't think of a reason not to uninstall the updater program doesn't necessarily mean there isn't one, however...

(and don't uninstall the journal by mistake for the updater, obviously...)

Just to clarify, it is a good idea to uninstall the journal updater once it has been successfully used. The current updater will only update to version 1.3. Once a new version is released, we will then need to issue a new updater.

I don't know why one would have a desktop icon for something one was never going to click again  but that's by the by, that's just me not knowing stuff. But why did you say make sure to say we wanted this icon, tick icon box, Hilary if it were no use ?

However someone needs to tell me how to delete the icon without uninstalling the programme because I need to be told basics re this software. Meantime if it does no harm sitting there I will let it sit there....but why would someone design a nice icon only for it be immediately deleted.

Well, because you were going to click it once. It was either say 'tick the box for the desktop icon' or say, 'OK, now you've installed the updater you need to find it, so: 1) open Windows Explorer 2) navigate to the folder where you installed it 3) locate the updater program...'

To delete an icon from your desktop, right-click on the icon and select 'delete'. But as Justin says, you might as well uninstall the updater; that isn't doing anything useful now. (It's a completely separate program from the actual journal, in case you were wondering.) To do this...

  1. Click the 'start' button, bottom left-hand corner
  2. On the start menu click 'Control Panel' (over on the right)
  3. In the window that opens, click 'uninstall a program'
  4. Scroll down to the 'J's.
  5. Click/ double-click on 'Journal Updater version 1.3'
  6. Wait (well, there was a long pause on my system, but that may just be the mood it's in today)
  7. When a window appears asking if you're sure you want to completely uninstall, etc, click 'yes'.

Ohhhh wait. You know what had me confused? The "tick the box for the desktop icon" instruction. I thought that was for us to tell the installer program to create a desktop shortcut for Resonance Journal - the zhong character icon. Installers often do have that option - would you like to create a desktop shortcut for the program you're installing - so that's what I thought it meant.

I just sort of continued right through, and it all came out fine in the end, but now I see that what the instruction actually meant was to put an installer program icon on the desktop, so you could use it to start the installer program.

This is all extra confusing because in version 1.3 (and presumably future versions, for brand-new users), there are two icons under discussion: the installer shortcut, and the Resonance Journal icon/shortcut.

Suggestions (which for all I know cannot be done with Java? I've installed only one Java program before in my life and I have no idea about it):

  1. Don't even ask people if they want an installer program shortcut on their desktop. Just tell us that's where it will be, period. As you said, Hilary, the only other option is to issue complicated instructions on how to find it, and I'm guessing no one wants that.

  2. Do have the installer ask people if they want a Resonance Journal shortcut on their desktop. That's a question people are accustomed to being asked by installers, and then it won't be necessary to instruct people about navigating to the Resonance_Journal program folder for it. They can just right-click it on their desktop to pin it to their taskbar, if that's what they want.

  3. Have the installer clean up after itself: remove its shortcut from the desktop, uninstall the underlying program, etc.

Those are all excellent ideas, but - like you - I don't know how many may be possible. I do know it was necessary to say 'check the box for the icon' on the updater, because it behaves differently on different versions of Windows: you can make it checked by default on one version, but it won't stay that way for another. And the updater couldn't be persuaded to create a desktop icon for the main program - hence the instructions to create one yourself. But maybe in the next updater...

ETA - the installer does create the program icon automatically - it's just the updater that can't.

So are we learning that there are versions of Windows which don't have a desktop? (Windows 8, maybe, rot its soul?)

Re: your ETA - just so we understand what the words mean, are the "installer" and the "updater" different things? Is the "installer" the Java or the Windows part, maybe, and the "updater" the Resonance Journal part? (Guessing - I'd been thinking installer and updater were interchangeable words, although now I can see how they may not be.)

If all else fails, is there any ability to alter the wording in the dialog box? So that when the installer/updater/whichever asks us to check the box for the icon, it would make clear it means the installer/updater icon and not the journal icon? (Again, reason being that in my experience when installers (updaters/whichever) ask about creating desktop shortcuts, they mean a shortcut to the main program, not to themselves. If people assume it means a Resonance Journal shortcut, and they say no because they don't want a Resonance Journal shortcut on their desktop - I've said no to those occasionally - then they've unwittingly created an installation problem.)

I have no idea what it has or hasn't (except popularity - it doesn't have that) - all I know is that if an installer is set to pre-check the 'add desktop icon' box, it will be checked on some versions and not others. I have 7 and Justin has Vista, so we know when those two behave differently.

Gah. Yes, of course they are interchangeable, but what I was trying to say was
a) there is one download to install the updater, for existing users, and
b) there is another download to install the journal, for new users.
'b' creates the journal's own (zhong) desktop icon; 'a', if you are updating from a version with no icon, does not. But it creates its own icon, so you can find it to run the updater.

I should probably cook supper and sentences not to construct try.

Well, I just read through the instructions again, and I see that actually paying attention helps a lot. Novel concept, right?

Since "make sure the box is checked to create a desktop shortcut" is beneath the heading "Install the updater program" - etcetera - it is perfectly clear the shortcut will be to the installer program and not to the journal itself.

I'm afraid I saw what I expected to see, not what I was told. (Wikipedia says that's a "confirmation bias," I think.) Sorry... :bag:

Well...I do think it would be nice if things worked more like what people are accustomed to (easy for me to say), but it's also a shameful fact that I didn't read Hilary's instructions very well, and that is , not , :duh:, :footinmouth:, and so forth. It's maddening to have to provide customer support which consists of quoting the instructions :brickwall:.

Oh, customer support requests that educate us on how to redesign the process are always good. Call yourself a 'usability tester' and you could get paid for that. (Though not by me; I couldn't afford you ;) .)
