The recent Bradford post on the twists of fate or fortune and whether experiences should be viewed as good or bad either with respect to the short term or long term echoed for me with this poem by Rumi. I have it pinned to the wall by my PC as a daily reminder, however only today did I see that the hexagrams uncovered in a divination could also be considered as 'a new arrival' or an 'unexpected visitor' that we should 'welcome and entertain' 'because each has been sent as a guide from beyond'

Or maybe they are the inspectors from the public health department ? Invited by the owner of the guest house to come to audit and inspect and give guidance on whether the guest house is providing the best accomodation that it can.

The Guest House by Jalaluddin Rumi

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
