Hi all,
I have a very - very important work presentation coming up in 3 weeks time, one that could pretty much make or break my career. I asked the IChing "How well can/will it go and what can I do to help it go well?" and got 50.1.2.4.6>36. I realise this is not a good reading but would appreciate your impartial input/advice as this is such a serious issue for me.

I don't have time to interpret this for you...but would suggest you drop the idea of 'positive' and 'negative' hexagrams its misleading See this thread dedicated to the misunderstanding http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/friends/showthread.php?t=8682

in your shoes I'd revisit your idea 'this is not a good reading' do you really know that ? I couldn't say that if it were my reading.

Thank you trojan, I'm not sure I agree entirely but I'll try to find the positives in my reading and see what (if any) they might be.

Since 50 deals with refinement, and line 1 and 4 remove the current content, while line 2 and 6 refer to containing real substance and a refined presentation (jade handles), I'd consider a rewrite or rethinking your presentation. There appear to be some elements which spoil the most valuable content of your presentation.

I once wrote an article which was accepted by a first rate and a second class industry magazine. The second rate accepted it as it was, while the first loved the general idea but insisted on a rewrite (50.1), a refinement of certain elements. Though it was a blow to my ego to think the original presentation was not good enough, I took the advice of the more prestigious and widely read publication and rewrote it in accord with their publication protocol. The article was published by the more respected publication and opened unexpected career opportunities. The editing process could have been seen as elements of 36, removing (or hiding) certain unnecessary and tainting personal biases (50.4) and sticking to the main points of the article. Turned out there was a reason the more highly regarded publication was more highly regarded (50.6).

Hello leika,

You have got already a good advice there, to get rid of the preconception that some hexagrams are "positive" or "negative" and the link to Bradford's article will help you enormously.

That said, what I can offer is a very personal view on your reading based on recent experience. For me, the process described by Hex 50 is similar to cooking a really nice meal, working from the bottom lines towards the top, the food is getting better and better, if you get the recipe right!
Every step of the process has its own risk and challenge. For a start, you need to lay the foundations right (have you read all the instructions? have you got the right vessel? ). While you are half way through the process things can still go wrong (has anyone got into the kitchen and distracted you completely? have you missed some of the ingredients?).
So, in order to be as good as you can be (line 6 - "the jade handles") you will put together your skills and mental capacity, as you develop your work (in all its practical aspects) you also develop yourself.

It is a very simple analogy that I hope will give you food :D for thought.
