I think there is a greater chance that the IChing will be better in the future than it was in the past !

5.4 -> 43

PS. Can somebody please do the math !

Perhaps discretion is the better part of valour?

If you play dead for a while then maybe you can slink away without having to resort to arms? ;)

I have to say Nicky has an interesting take on the images.

43 is about sorting a direction instead of springing into action. (Decide before acting.) And of course, 5.4 talks about being in the cave, completely hidden, but eventually, you will come out of it.

Does that make any sense? ... Erm, what was the question?

Yi is cringing. Waiting for better times. No idea if it has to do with the past, probably most with 'now'. And yes, lots of vigor in the air.
Water turns into lake, things will become more clear, get more form, be more accessible for people, easier to share. But losing some, or a lot, of their depth.

There wasn't a question

There was a statement of optimism for the future, and it all looks rosey to me, regardless of the blood in the pit !

Dear LiSe,

This is an interesting way of looking at the upper hexagram.

I can see the "depth" analogy w.r.t. water changing to a lake. I can also see the lake symbolizes communication. But how does losing the depth imply accessibility?

Did the Yi's answer is talking about Yi's future?... or... is talking about your idea that Yi will be better in the future than its past?

I tend to think that is the second one. (i have some dificulty to believe that Yi describes itself as someone that won't hear the Wisdom due to his own egoism and lack of modesty)

Best wishes

Yes, sometimes I see blood as passion which as Wilhelm indicates in his commentary could lead to life or death. But the advise of the line seems to be 'get outta there!'

Like when there's an argument in the room and you don't want to resort to throwing punches so you need to go and walk around the block for a while to maybe come back and communicate with an idea to sort it out? So I can see the rosiness.

A friend asked for a reading concerning moving to Phoenix and his personal and career growth, and got 5.4 as well as line 3. He got out of Dodge in a hurry, and I’m quite sure he’s the better for it. He was stuck to the point of endangering his future.

Have to chuckle with LiSe’s interpretation, and Jesed’s question came to my mind also. Maybe predicting Yi's future isn’t a wise thing to do?

Standing fast

I think the only danger is that I will be swayed by the general sense of pessimism and loss. The IChing speaks to me of Nourishment and Breakthrough, and I’m happy to Wait, which I was already doing, all in good time !

Hi stevev

I like your last post. I think is a good thing to take the answer that way

However, talking just about the answer, for me the danger in 5.4 has its roots not in pesimism, but in supeficiality and stubborness

Past Cause of 5.4 is in 23.4: the resting place is stripped because of superficiality

Present 5.4 one is like waiting in the blood... one should get out from that situation (relationship, state, idea...)

Future Effect of 5.4 is in 43.4: it is hard to move further... if one corrects and allows to be leaded, good fortune would come.. but is probably that one doesn't listen the Wisdom because of egoism, lack of modesty, stubborness

Best wishes

Let fate take it's course

Hello Jesed,

Yes I hear what your saying, but there is no turning back now. The IChing counsels against moving in any direction, in any case the worst that can happen is failure. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Regards

Steve
