Just to share what I think is an expansion of my understanding with you all, for what its worth.

More and more I see that within every extreme is the seed of its opposite. I?ve known this theoretically for a long time, but the degree that I?m seeing it now is greatly enlarged and more obvious in everyday small things.

I have to credit Chris with some of this. While his ways and means are beyond my grasp, his explanations of exaggeration and reduction contained within each hexagram is making more sense to me all the time.

A perfect example of this is in 1. Unlike my earlier thinking on this, 1 contains not only life but death ? just as with Shiva and Parvati, the creator and destroyer.

The same with any hexagram normally considered as dark, 23, 44, 12. Each has contained within it the seed of wholeness, unity and peace. And within light there is the seed of darkness.

I?m not sure what all this means, practically, yet, or how it will integrate with what I?ve previously learned, but I have a feeling it means dividing walls will becoming down.

To know the seeds...

That's really nice Candid. If you get a working understanding of this, you can become fearless.

Y'know, I asked the I Ching about Black Holes, and got the answer 27.3 to 22.

Hi Candid

That's great! It's a wonderful feeling isn't it, when something that you understand intellectually starts to feel True.

Just before I read your post I'd been reading the first few pages of Nigel Richmond's Language of the Lines (which I've just acquired by a huge stroke of luck through a remark of Bradford's in aother thread) and I'm getting the feeling that his take on the subject is going to help me a lot with exactly this. Do, please, continue to share your insights.

Love,

Shelley

Hi Candid

"...Each contains within it the seeds of wholeness..." I have to agree. And in another way of saying it, I believe each hexagram has inherent within it the solution to the problem of integration and disintegration. For the problem of "stripping away," there is the fruit that is left. For the problem of the strong maiden, "yin" there is the solution of proper contact and protocol. Etc. Etc. Etc.

When yang becomes too extreme, it changes into its opposite, and we have dragons fighting in the meadow. When yin becomes too extreme, it becomes yang, and the battle begins anew. The Tai Chi symbol has the small light circle in the black, and the small black in the white.

Tash, a black hole as 27.3 - 22, the appearence of nothing, turning inward away from nourishment. Facinating.

Shelly, when theory becomes actual its definately development. I hope you'll share more on this also.

Gene, I had a feeling you'd respond with the Tai Chi example of Yin/Yang. It sure is a clear picture of it.

Dear Candid,

Speaking of walls... thank you for being the occasion of my synchronicity for the day

I just yesterday asked Yi to comment on one of my pet projects/ambitions - and received 47, unchanging.

OUCH

I know that LiSe has a beautiful, positive perspective on this one already, but I've never been able to share it. Too many experiences of collapsing trust, depression, oppression and all - the walls round the tree always felt like a prison.

Lots of reading and re-reading of the Daxiang later, I came around to the idea that I needed to expunge all the reasons for doing this that were triggered by reactions to other people - not trust the verbal rationalisations - and go in to the essential purpose of it. It turned out (surprise!) that my plans for implementing said pet project could have been designed especially to sabotage my inner purpose.

Anyway, after some radical redesigning, I asked Yi to comment on the new plans. Received 37 changing to 39 (lines 1 and 6). I think 37,1 was Yi's way of getting me to re-evaluate the 'walls'.

Hilary, so then in retrospect of your 47, would you now say it was a 'constructive' hexagram, or that it had within it a corrective property? In adversity, cheerfulness becomes the solution. So, contained within oppression is the seed of inner resolve and joy.

And within 37, organized structure contains the seed of obstruction and oppression; as a father (line 6) can hold down/oppress the natural creative impulses of a child (line 1).

37 is also a picture of actualizing thought into tangible manifestation. Synchronistic indeed!

I'm not quite at the 'retrospect' stage on this one yet! I think what I've just understood is that it's neutral. There are walls around, enclosure, and no communication or trust through the walls. There it is. Now what?

I can beat my head against the walls, or develop advanced strategies of cynicism to deal with all those words I cannot trust - but what if everything I needed were on the inside? Suppose the walls were a kind of 'teaching aid' for focussing inward?

And then 47 starts to turn into 48. Hm - the Tardis hexagram, perhaps?

Hi Candid, et al,

Excellent post, Bro. Brought to mind Hex 36 line 6, which paraphrases one of the basic laws of Hermeticism. Glad to see you are hitting on all 12 bars again. *grin*

Namaste,

Afterthought - about hexagram seeds - otherwise known as nuclear hexagrams... guess what the nuclear of 47 is...

P.S. If you suddenly find you can't post, we may have run out of bandwidth for the month, due mainly to the virus doing the rounds.
