Hi everyone,
I study and practice astrology so I am an astrologer. I do Tarot readings so I am a Tarot reader. What do you call yourself if you study the IC and uses the IC to answer questions? I am an ICHING diviner? A diviner of the ICHING? An 'IChinger'? An IChing reader?

Chinger just means classic-er
Use either Bu Ren or Bu Shi (Bu3 Ren2 or Bu3 Shi4)
Bu - to divine with the Yi
Ren - Person
Shi - More scholarly person, pronounced shrrrr
I'd tend to use Bu Shi for someone much more advanced.
Yixue (yeeschway) means general Yijing studies

Hi Bradford,
Is there another word for divinination in general? Do they have a different word for divining with astrology or the plum blossom oracle etc?

Hi Pagan-
Divination in general is Zhan (Zhan1)
There are several ways to say Astrology,
all begin with Zhan.
Zhan Xiang (divining the signs) is one.

Ok I have been going through my books and I have not found the exact explaination, yet But I will than I'll post it.

A person that divines with the I-Ching is called,a "Chun Tsu". But please bear with me as I try to relocate the exact information.

Your humble servant,
Papa Jack

I like buren and bushi a lot but somebody might think the latter was Japanese = warrior.

It is a problem!

Like being an old fashioned "English Major". (What do you call someone who was an "English major" in college? An Anglicist? A person of letters? A Blockbuster clerk?)

Also, add to your other list, I belive it is 70s Californese: Ching Freak.

So we have our own kinder, gentler bushido!
Actually, bushidao in Chinese.
It's still a question of honor :)

A sort of Mary Poppins guru? We could call her Nanny Ching. Have anything a little less Pollyanna?

ichingueros is wonderful if you use the Yi and are familiar with Spanish. It's so clever and beautiful.

But what will the average punter think when he/she sees this word? Won't even know how to pronounce it, is my guess.

The purpose of the name's to draw the people who can benefit from it, right? But there's nothing obvious or elegant, right? So it seems to me that your alternatives are something dreadfully pedestrian like 'I Ching Consultant' which most people will recognize immediately, or something interesting but obscure like 'ichingeuro'.

You know, if it was me, I'd put up a sign that said 'I Ching oracle consulations done here'
and leave the question of what I was to people's imaginations.

I did that once, in a local newspaper. Two real estate ladies conference called me and asked to speak with Mr. I Ching. I really wanted to say "hah, dis is mastah hi ching; what you question?" But I held back my laughter and explained the ad more clearly to them.

I was browsing through Staples (office supplies) today and had an idea for anyone looking to establish themselves as an I Ching reader/diviner.

BUy a package of gift certificates..fill them out, offering free readings, and leave them on counters at bookstores, Wild BY Nature markets, new agey shops.....

"The bearer of this is entitled to one free reading/divination by I Ching Scholar and Intuitive: name.
A value of $_____(your asking price)

while this isn't an idea for a cute, quick name, it IS a way to establish yourself. NOt many people can resist a free offer, and once they have a taste of the magic of Yi, they will come back for more. and tell their friends.

actually, i like the name: *I Ching Scholar* because any reader worth listening to is one who has studied..been a serious student. you only sprout your wings of intuition after some serious, lengthy study.

Sometimes I wish you were a little older (or I was a little younger) and you weren't married.

Jeany, if I had a penny for every free reading I've done I could hire J. Walter Thompson to design a name, and a logo. Besides, I didn't realize the name or title was to imply a read-for-profit venture.

I Ching Scholar could apply to a scholar, I suppose. But not every proficient reader is a scholar, and not every scholar is a proficient reader.

I thought the question was humorous to begin with.
