Website of interest - I Ching: Mothering Change

In my wanderings thru the web, I came across this web site – I Ching: Mothering Change. It is based on Stephan Karcher’s work. You can view and explore each hexagram on its own; or, there is a Consult the Oracle page, where you can generate a reading. Each reading generates a primary hexagram, identifies one changing line, which you can then consult for the related hexagram.

I haven’t explored it much, but in general it seems very ‘Karcher-esk,’ though for me it seems a bit more accessible than his book, ‘Total I Ching.’

By way of example, I recently did a reading that had primary hexagram 58.

This web site titles 58:
Opening / Mediator

Other peoples' names for this Gua:
Opening (Barrett); Satisfaction (Hatcher); The Joyous, Lake (Wilhelm)

This web site’s 'judgement' for 58 is:

"Express yourself. Make an offering and you will succeed. Advantageous Trial."

For contrast, Wilhelm’s judgement is:

"The Joyous. Success. Perseverance is favorable."

This site has what they call “Circle of Meanings”:

Expression, communication, opportunity; spread the word; interact, interpenetrate, open a passage or way; joy, excitement, pleasure; persuasive, responsive, freed from compulsion; the marketplace, free exchange of information; gather, exchange, barter, trade; sexual stimulation and the power of inner images. Inner self-reflection now gives you the ability to express the spirit in the human community.

These seem similar to Bradford Hatcher’s Key Words, which for 58 are:

Free, open up, clear out; barter, bargain, negotiate, weigh, exchange, pay, redeem
; Enjoyment, pleasure, happiness, delight, relish, relief, gratification, self-interest
; Harvest, reaping rewards, fruits; compensation, incentives, persuasion, satisfaction
; Hedonics, pursuit of pleasure and happiness as intrinsically benign and instructive ; Encouragement, desire, attraction, welcome; charm, enchantment, bewitchment
; Ananda, eros, cheer, epicurean hedonism, need/want as driving force in evolution

It has a section called "Spirit Helpers" which I think are an interpretation of the trigrams. The text (or commentary) for each Gua are in sections titled "Voice of the Mothers," "Voice of the Fathers," Pairing, and interpretations for the lines. Despite these titles (which could feel woo-woo or new agey for some) there maybe be more substance here than one might first assume.

Best, David.

'In the family way' means to be pregnant. I wonder if that was the meaning he had in mind when he used the term. I wonder if it is only an English term for pregnancy ?

Hello Trojina,

I wondered that too at first - had I stumbled upon an I Ching website for expectant mothers? But reading from the web site:

"... conversation(s) with the timeless voices of Mother and Father in order to embrace family transitions as sacred rites of passage. It offers a practical resource for cultivating creativity and compassion during times of change, connecting us with the ongoing process of the real, or the Dao, in family life ... "

What I glean from this is:

a) that it's a web site which highlights changes you might encounter within a family ...

b), or more broadly (and my read on it), that it's a site that presents the wisdom and advice of the I Ching as coming from our archetypal mother and father figures - which feels in keeping with Karcher's mythic / shamanistic approach to the Yi.

Best, David.

I did chuckle involuntarily when I saw it.

The 'Consult the Oracle' page doesn't work, I see nowhere to consult the Oracle ? Perhaps the site is not yet complete.

A bit confusing I think, but you click on the image that is there. Just below it, it says: "click above for you divination"
