I'm not really sure how to interpret 36.3.5 > 51 regarding "What are the chances of D passing in the near future?" but feel it is unclear to me. I'm thinking though that with things I've read about line 3, that it might be a no, as the line seems to be about working through things or dealing with more. At the same time if there's things to work through or deal with it could also be a yes in the near future because any death involves grieving and working through things in some sense and with different people the levels of that differ too.

Any interpretations?

I think line 3 says: He is not there yet, there are signs of decay, but only on the surface.
Line 5: There is hope, he must persevere.

Internal hexagrams are 40.2.4.6 -> 23
He must take care of himself more, dropping all the bad habits(foxes) (if there are any). Allowing his friends to take care of him/listen to their advice.

And then he may feel a new surge of energy 51, and laugh again :)

Oh, wait a minute!
36.3.5 Leads to 3 (Arduous beginnings)
36.3.4 to 51, so which is it?

If line 4, then: It will be a close call, [Legge] "(But) he is able to carry out the mind appropriate (in the condition indicated by) [this hexagram], quitting the gate and courtyard (of the lord of darkness)."

I know the changing lines were 3 and 5 so I must have given the wrong future hexagram... oops. That view of 3 and 5 sounds accurate to me! Thanks!

It's a case of injury, fear of injury, or lack of appreciation -- not death.:)

I asked about this because the other day I was talking with some family members and talk about seeing ghosts around the house a lot was coming up. I even saw the tail of a dog we had who passed away a couple years ago while sitting at the dinner table. My mom mentioned how my dad has always said when ghosts/spirits suddenly all start appearing that it implies someone is going to pass away.

That being said, since I get the impression D isn't the one. I also decided to ask about my aunt, who randomly couldn't be at christmas with us as she was dealing with medical issues (or a flu bug as initially disclosed - but the need for an emergency CT scan the morning following boxing day seemed like more and we eventually were told it was to check the kidneys). I'm not sure of the results if received, but decided to ask the same question changing the person to her.... "What are the chances of my aunt passing in the near future?" and my first thought at the result was that it was peculiar. But that was because of the name of the hexagram "joyousness" which doesn't seem like what you think of when you think death, but anyway the hexagram was 58.2.4 also seeming to lead to hexagram 3.

I feel like it's talking about me somehow rather than what will happen to anyone else, does that make sense? Or am I confused?

Yes, it's entirely possible that Yi is talking about you and not about whether or not your aunt is close to passing. Like you, I don't see the connection between 58.2.4 and death . . .
