Dear I Ching Community,

my (sterilized) cat usually goes out twice a day. Approx. once every week he disappears for 1-2 days. This time, however, it's been several days since he left. He left on Friday, and it's Wednesday morning now. I've been looking for him in nearby forests without success. The cat has a chip so I'd be informed by a vet or city guards if he was brought to them.

I asked the Oracle what can I do to find him:

10.6 to 58 Treading to Opening

http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/free_I_Ching_reading/reading.php?lines=778779

Any thoughts?

Thank you in advance!

I think with 10.6 one knows one is on the right way home if one passes the same landmarks returning and one did when one was going. This came to me literally when walking last week. As long as I saw things I had seen on my journey out I knew I was on the right track on the way back.

Right. What an excellent omen for a cat finding his way home. What can you do ? First check you haven't changed anything significantly in the immediate environment that may confuse him. I don't think cats go by landmarks in this way but other cues may offer familiarity that helps him retrace his steps.

Go in a circle. Can you even see paw prints ? I ask because the line literally refers to tiger tracks which are cat tracks. I don't feel he has gone beyond his usual circle of territory so you need to go around that territory as far as you know it.

Good Luck I do hope he comes home.

Hehe,
Following the Tiger (10)
Following his tracks. (Line 6)

Is there a certain direction he usually comes back from?
Which way do the nearest female cats live? (58)
Or the cat person who has been feeding him.

Stop looking (10.6: end of treading) and wait (58: relaxation). The situation is out of your hands. I am in the same situation in that my cat went missing last night. She has advanced ear cancer, and it is affecting her sense of balance. Sooner or later she is going to go off to die, as cats do, but I expect her to live until the end of the year.

Thank you All for your answers!

The cat is sterilized, so I don't think he followed a female. Also, every time he returns from his adventures he's very thin and his nose is scratched, so I don't think he's being fed anywhere else. He probably just patrols his territory and hunts. However, it is possible that someone offered him food, and maybe took him home and locked the door not to let him out. If so I know he'll escape, sooner or later.

I know the general direction where he goes to. He crosses the property of my neighbours' and then takes a path to a forest. His brother showed me that path. But after that it's very difficult to know where he is because it is a forest, he can be anywhere. I do go there every day and call his name, but it's impossible to look under every bush.

I know it happens with cats sometimes that they disappear for longer. When he's home he likes cuddling and sleeping, but he also has the need to go away sometimes. It's just that it never took him so long.

It's uplifting to know that he's somewhere nearby. I hope he's fine and will come home soon. I'm going to hang out posters. Maybe someone will spot him.

And yes, some part of me tells me that I should just relax and wait till he returns, but I also feel guilty that I don't do enough.

He still hasn't returned. I've been looking everywhere, posted posters, handed out leaflets, to no avail. And so I asked I Ching again:

Is my cat still alive?

The answer: 62.2.5 to 28

I know it's not the best way to ask questions but I thought I Ching might give me a clue. At first I thought it's a good omen. I thought the answer simply meant I worried too much about something that wasn't so dramatic at all. Then I thought it meant one cannot be too cautious and that I should do everything in my power to find him. And then I read LiSe, and I thought that maybe it means he's dead.

I really don't know what to think, and I'm worried crazy. What are your thoughts?

Best regards,

Sylwia

It's so hard to answer and from the reading honestly I can't say because the way Yi may speak of death can vary a great deal. 62.2.5>28 it looks like a small being (62) in extreme circumstances(28) holding it's own. If you look at the lines in a literal way it looks a bit like he shacked up with someone else. Cats are peculiar sometimes. If I had to say whether this reading meant he was alive or dead I'd say alive because of the lines.

What about taking these lines really literally. Are there any cave type things nearby ?

Perhaps you might find out how to be with this if you ask about you now ? You are asking about him and it's hard to know how to take the answer but what about asking something like 'Yi please advise me on my best attitude now ?' Something open like that ?

I really am sorry for this. My heart goes out to you.

What are your thoughts?

The activity of the flying bird suggests to me that the cat is still alive. Line 5 is about hunting in a cave. Is there a basement in your building? What about an abandoned building (28) in your area?

Thank you both for your answers!

I hope that if someone took him in they'll see my posters or my leaflets (I put them in people's post boxes) and calls me. I know that cats change homes sometimes, but this one is really attached to me and to his brother who lives with me. So I think that even if he liked someone else he'd at least come and visit us, esp. that I was letting him out at least twice a day and he could go here and there all the time. Which is also why I think he'd try to escape if someone locked him at their home, because this particular cat really likes his freedom and wandering around.

There aren't caves here, but there are basements. I checked mine, but I'll look for some abandoned house tomorrow. I'd much rather have him shack up with someone else than starve to death in some basement.

I tried to take those lines literally in many ways, so I also searched places to the West, and went to a place where birds are (some people keep post pigeons in the area, and they're not cat lovers). I was also looking closer to the earth, to see if he's not laying somewhere in the bushes.

Something else also happened.

First, my neighbour called to say there's a pigeon sitting on a pavement and not moving. He thought the pigeon was sick and asked me to call for help. I went to check on him, but the bird was just tired and after an hour he flew up a tree.

Then, several hours later, after one more search for my cat, I returned home and saw another cat under that tree. That was one of my neighbours'. They have two snow white cats, brother and sister. But the people don't think cats should live at home with them, and so the cats are kept outside. The cats like people's company, esp. the female who likes children too, so they're constantly looking for new homes. The female found at least two other homes, but the neighbours take her back every time and so she looks again. The male simply comes to my place for night and returns to my neighbours for breakfast.

About 2-3 months ago the girl-cat moved out and even though the neighbours brought her back she ran away again, so I even hadn't seen her that time. But today it was her under that tree. I petted her and wanted to bring her home, but she doesn't like to be carried (she has ill legs) and so I had to put her down. But she did follow me to the other side of the street, took a short cut, and was waiting in front of my door. So I took her up and fed her, after which she left again. Her brother sleeps in my legs now.

I don't know if it's related, but I thought maybe this story is some part of the 62 hex.

I keep calling the city guards and checking the city shelter to make sure he's not there. That's the procedure here. If he were found dead someone would call the city guards and they'd look for his chip, and call me. And if he were alive and for some reason they wouldn't find the chip, he'd go to the shelter. The shelter shows pictures of all new animals, so I check them every couple hours.

I also posted his pictures all over Facebook.

I like the idea of asking a question about me as Trojina suggested, but I'll do that tomorrow with fresh mind.

Kokosz (on the left) is the cat I'm looking for. His brother, Kajko, is on the right.

My heart goes out to you; in his younger years, my cat often, as the story would go, take my AmEx card, his backpack and go travel. Mind you this was an inside cat his whole life until i got a house in the country when he was 8 - he knew nothing about "outside" and did not have the tools to deal with it. I'd freak everytime. It would take him on average a good week to come back: exhausted, alive, thinner, but very satisfied with himself..

THinking as a cat, from what you've said about your environment, and this last reading - I'm thinking big disorganized wood pile, a fallen down shack of some sort, where he'd be huddling below. Have there been storms lately where you are, that would make him look for shelter both from the weather and other animals?

I'm not getting that he is dead, not at all. Rather preoccupied with the immediate details of "now", more so than "ok, I've gone on a long enough walkabout, time to go home."

Sending good thoughts :)

Dear All,

I have some news, although I haven't found him yet.

I did as Trojina suggested and asked Yi an open question: "Yi please advise me on my best attitude re Kokosz's disappearance now?"

And I got 54 - The Marrying Maiden
http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/free...+best+attitude+re+Kokosz's+disappearance+now?

My first thought was: OK, so I see my cat is going to marry someone else after all. ;)

But then I thought to take the hexagram more literally, and look for a place in my area with a similar name. There is a street here called Water Maiden's Str, but it's a bit further from my home and it's rather busy. I hope my cat doesn't like busy streets.

Then I thought of two other streets that don't have the word "maiden" in them but refer to maidens anyway. One is Rusałka's Str. Rusałka in the Slavic pagan beliefs was a maiden hurt by a boy (an abandoned fiancee or a a girl abused by a man) who became a water nymph and took revenge on all men by luring them into water and killing them.

The other is Halka's Str. Halka is a Polish opera composed by Moniuszko about a peasant girl named Helen who was seduced by a rich boy who later (even though he promised her marriage) abandoned her and married a rich noblewoman.

The two streets cross each other, they are in a forest, and in a place not far from my cat's territory. So I thought it was too perfect to miss.

I walked down Rusałka's Str without success, and then Halka's Street. Nobody there saw a cat similar to Kokosz.

But then I thought to spend more time around Rusałka's and Halka's crossing, and there, in some streets around, I met several people who said they saw a cat looking exactly like mine.

If that is correct, then it seems Kokosz became best friends with some red male cat and they hunt mice together. He also made first shy attempts at befriending two female cats.

Of course cats like mine are very common, but I left my leaflets with the nice people, and they are to call me if he shows up again. I hope it was him.

One more interesting thing are the trigrams:

UPPER TRIGRAM: Chên
CONCEPT: Thunder, Exciting, Power
QUALITIES: Thunder, Movement, Active, Moving, Arousing, Excited, Diligent, Angry, Nervous, Threatening, Anxious, Successful, Flying, Shocking, Motion, Growth, Vehemence, Forceful

LOWER TRIGRAM: Tui
CONCEPT: Joyful, Marsh, Complacent
QUALITIES: Happy, Gossipy, Slanderous, Joy, Critical, Quarrelsome, Laughing, Smiling, Harmonious, Pleasurable, Contentment, Low Lying Water, Marsh, Soft, Sorceress

The area of Warsaw where he's supposedly so active right now is called "Radość" (Joy).

I really hope it's him and that he's simply having his life adventure and he comes back once he's tired.

P.S. There was a storm in the meantime, but he's not afraid of thunders. He just doesn't like being wet, so he'd hide somewhere for the time of rain and go out as soon as it cleared out.

Best regards,

Sylwia

What a handsome boy he is. I hope he comes home soon.

We have two (that I know about) too many sad cat threads on this forum right now. "Zero" is the correct number for sad cat threads. *shakes fist ineffectually*

Hah ! You aren't his first priority right now ? You are his second wife now ? As his 'second wife' you cannot dictate how things go, you have no control. I wonder if someone tempted him into their home and he got comfy or whether you are second wife to his Big Adventure. When sons go travelling their moms take a back seat in terms of what to prioritise. That's how it first struck me and I hope this is the case, that he's put you on a back burner because he has had either a better offer or a big adventure calling. I hope so, but come along young man your mother is worried !

Whatever has happened 54 shows you aren't in control, which you know. There's not much you can do. Also there are other ways to see it as you have seen it literally, but that's my take FWIW.

Thank you, Lisa and Trojina!

Yes, I thought so too, that the Marrying Maiden hex meant I wasn't his priority, and so a couple days ago I asked:

Will he come back to me? I got 57 UC

I thought it meant he would. Esp. from this sequence:

"Subtly Penetrating follows from Hexagram 56, Travelling:
‘The Traveller has no place where he is accepted, and so Subtly Penetrating follows. Subtly Penetrating means entering in.’"

But today marks two weeks since he left, and I started to wonder if perhaps I should go and look for him again. It's possible he was having a great fun then, but he's tired and confused or sick now and needs help.

Advise me if I should go and look for Kokosz? I got 18.2.6. to 15

Does it mean I should take action to prevent decay? I.e. go and look for him?

Thank you all again, it's really helping to have some insight.

I have been following this thread and sending my best wishes for Kokosz's return, but felt others were doing better interpretations than I could--particularly you, sylwia, the searching of street names based off 54 was brilliant! I'm commenting now to ask, did you put fliers up on those maiden-associated-named streets? (Beyond giving leaflets to the people you spoke with.) Because 18 (in general) would make me think that some work needed to be done to get him home. That said, line 6 is more confusing in terms of action... Nevertheless, I think 18 turning into 15 suggests some kind of action would be helpful. I would suggest leafleting again in your own neighborhood, in the water maiden neighborhood/streets, and also checking again with the pound or animal control. My feeling is he might be very near where the nice people you met thought they saw him. Perhaps bring one of his toys or a can of his familiar food with you to lure him, in case you discover he is indeed nearby. Also make sure you have a carrier, leash, bag or some means of transporting him when you go searching. 18 and 15 suggest the need come prepared, in order for it all to go well.

Best of luck!

Then again, reading Lise's interpretations of 18.2 and 18.6, makes me think Yi might be telling you to let Kokosz have his adventure, and not interfere...! Especially the idea of "nice gestures being demeaning for the recipient"... That said, if this is about letting Kokosz go, because he is having a good time and that's what's best for him, it seems pretty cold... Maybe the question again, "What is the best attitude I could have towards Kokosz right now?"...an update. Not sure. Sending my best wishes!

I hope your cat returns...our cat got lost and found three times...
It all depends on whether a cat is a real adventurer or domesticated..
If he cannot live on his own, needs feeding - I suggest just to walk around especially closer to night
in the vicinity and call his name...That's how we found ours...
and always take some catfood...
4 days our lady was gone...then neighbor noticed her around shopping store nearby...
Hope you find your baby

Thank you both!

I think he hunts mice, Innertruth. But also many people put food for cats outside their houses, so he can always help himself to someone else's bowl. ;)

Mulberry, I printed so many fliers that I ran out of toner. So the fliers I gave to the people there were the last ones I had. But now I have a new toner, and I already talked to the post office. They say they can distribute my fliers across the entire area (ca 500 houses). So I'm going to use their help.

I'll also put out a leaflet in front of the local church.

I take his fav food with me when I look for him and I sing our song. Yeah, we have a song. :) I taught it to them some time ago because they tended to lag behind when I needed to lock them at home and go out. Whenever my cats hear the song they come at once because they know it means a special treat.

So I sang the song all over the area, and that means that either he didn't hear me or he didn't want to come or was unable to.

However, he's never showed me his hideouts. He and his brother are very different in this respect. Kajko is a mama's boy, like the kid you never wanted to hang around, because he'd tell your parents everything. So when Kajko goes to a forest, it's enough to call him there and he comes at once, very proud of himself, and shows me his path home etc.

Kokosz, on the contrary, he'd never come out in a forest. He'd take a short cut home instead, and wait for me in front of my door with this face: "Why are you shouting my name all over the place, mama? I've been here waiting for you all the time. I swear! So are we going to eat or what?"

Or he wouldn't return at all, and stay in the forest for a night or two, even if that meant skipping his favourite meals. It's just that this time it's over two weeks already. That never happened before.

I didn't plan to put him into a carrier. I would if he were sick, but otherwise I'd give him a treat and see if he follows me home. I hope that would be acceptable in view of 18, but I'll ask Yi again, as you advised me, and see what it tells me.

Thank you All!

BTW I asked Yi yesterday whether I should have Kajko look for Kokosz. I got 9.1.3 to 59

Does it sound like a good idea?

9.1 - wise not to try to obtain anything by force. So that says no. And 3rd line is negative too - too much urgency to make a wise choice. Hope you find your cat!
